THE assistant head of a Harlow secondary school is to receive an MBE for her outstanding services to education.
Marie Erwood of Stewards School was named in the Queens birthday honours which were released last week. She has taught in Harlow secondary schools since 1975 and has inspired generations of pupils as a teacher of history. Mrs Erwood said: Im thrilled and over the moon because I have always been a big monarchist and always loved the Royal family so it will be a dream come true to meet the Queen. I see [the award] as something that is not just about me, but a recognition of all teachers and the town of Harlow. I have worked at Stewards for 24 years and it has been brilliant and to see the success that the school is having is fantastic. Mrs Erwood was nominated by the schools headteacher

Rhonda Murthar who has worked with her for 20 years. She said: Marie Erwood is an exceptional person. No-one could have done more to enable thousands of young people in our community to have the best chance of living happy and fulfilling lives and to lead them towards becoming responsible young citizens. I can think of noone more deserving of this exceptional honour. All areas for which Mrs Erwood is responsible at the school were awarded outstanding in their recent Ofsted inspection and Stewards recently became the first school in Essex to receive the Cultural Diversity Quality Standard Gold Award the result of Mrs Erwoods passionate belief in equality of opportunity for all and valuing every child.

Abigail Mash, a past pupil at the school, said: I can honestly say that I have never met a more passionate teacher than Mrs Erwood. She firmly believes that every child matters and has proven to be a huge influence on so many people, myself included. She has been an inspiration to me in striving to achieve my dream to become a teacher one day, and if I could prove to be as good a teacher as she is, I would be extremely proud she is the epitome of all that a teacher should be. A SAWBRIDGEWORTH man has also been awarded an MBE in the birthday honours list. Norman Arthur Brown is to be recognised for his outstanding services to the community. Essex County Councils Jenny Owen has been awarded a CBE for her role as executive director of Adults, Health and Community Well Being and as president of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) since April 2009. what can be done. I also have been promoting the Essex Apprenticeship scheme in the Commons with Business Secretary Vince Cable. I can now reveal exclusively to Herald readers that I will soon be seeking an apprentice for my Westminster office. I believe in apprenticeships and vocational training, because they give youngsters the skills to succeed in life. So I look forward to a local Apprentice working in the House of Commons. Busy start to life as an MP

t has been a busy few weeks as the new MP for Harlow, and there has been much work to do. I have been doing all I can to help local community organisations, support local apprenticeships and help local residents with their problems. I have held three surgeries so far, and hope to move them around the town and surrounding villages, to make it easier for residents to attend. We will soon be opening a new constituency office at the Harlow Enterprise Hub, just off Edinburgh Way, and will be able to publish a surgery phone number to make surgery appointments. In the House of Commons, I have been doing all I can to support Harlow Foodbank. It is hard to believe, but the last Government stopped the local Jobcentre in Harlow from handing out Foodbank vouchers

to the unemployed. This was a slap in the face for decent hardworking families, whose benefits or incomes were delayed through no fault of their own. Local man Gary Knott alerted me to the problem. He runs the Foodbank in Harlow, with a dedicated team of volunteers. Working with Gary, I have urged the Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith to cut the red tape, so that Jobcentre Plus staff can issue Foodbank vouchers and have tabled a Parliamentary Motion. I have also raised the issue in Parliament. Thankfully, the new Government has now promised to look at this, to see
