Defense Essay I have chosen to do an essay as my form of communicating conveying my narrative experience throughout my whole life. In the present scenario, writing essays have again become a common way to express our thoughts, views and experiences. It has also made us able to discuss various topics in a better manner. The essay writing also plays a role of deep importance in maintaining the analytical and logical way of understanding and learning new as well as effective things in our daily life. It also let us to make our thoughts capable of learning new things from history. We can even easily understand the causes of our failures by developing the habit of essay writing as a part of our life. These all things happen just because this habit of essay writing brings us even closer to literature and hence to Nature. I chose this quote from the internet because I felt as if this explains very well why I chose to do an essay. I chose an essay to do for my final literacy narrative. I feel that it is one of the most efficient ways to convey my message about my literacy experience. I felt like I could explain different parts of my life and different examples in my life into separate paragraphs. Writing an essay will also help me better organize the paper. If I was to convey my literacy narrative in a different genre, I felt as if I wouldnt be able to defend it as well.

My first choice of genre was going to be a picture, but then I realized that I really cant draw, but I had great ideas in how I could in symbolize my experiences in the picture. My second choice of genre was a poem. I use to take poem classes while I was in high school and I really like poetry and I know that I like to rhyme even though my rhyming maybe a little elementary, but I feel comfort in doing it but once I met with Mr. Borrero to discuss our narratives and what genre we chose as well why, I realized that poetry was more than just rhyming, poetry has a lot of symbolism and other techniques that maybe I wouldnt have been able to include if I was to do a poem. I veered away from the poem which left me with my final choice, an essay. One main factor I chose to write about was home/family and how that has impacted me with my literary experience. I chose to write about that because thats where I came from and where I was raised. My home is where I first learned to read write as well as communicate with other people. In my essay I talked about my mom, and the actions she took to help me with my literacy, for example: my very first reading of books like the little pink bible Precious Moments and the Dr. Seuss book one fish two fish red fish blue fish. I talked about my mom buying me computer games and making me play them on the computer as well as teaching me how to send and receive email. I wanted to tell about the email and the computer games mostly because that was my first start on the computer, that was the basics for me. I also talked about the social economic status that we were in because I believe the social status can play a major role when it comes to learning. that you are getting are different than someone with a very rich upbringing. I talked about my family being a very liberal family because that can influence your communication in either a very positive way or in a negative way. If my family was not liberal in any type of way, I feel that I would be a different person today. I feel as if I wouldnt be in college because I would be in trouble a lot. If my family wasnt a liberal family, I feel as if that would hinder my future. I talked about my mom printing off extra work for me during the weekends because she thought that it would make me a better reader and a better writer. I chose this example because although there were good intentions behind the work, I felt as if it made me veer away from school more and not want to take school serious. This is significant in my life because without the extra work, I dont know where I would be as far writing. Furthermore, I talked about my mom buying me a library card and making me go to the library and read books. I chose this situation to discuss because I felt as if she cared for me and cared about my success in the future. The library played a significant part in shaping me as a reader because I learned what type of environment I read best in, I also learned that there are so many genres to pick from, so I learned which genre I like to read best. just those two settings, it would be only fair to justify that with an essay, so that I could go into as much detail and depth as I wanted. Earlier I said that I wanted to do a poem but based upon how much influence my school and home/ family has had on me there, would be no way that I could explain it or even the main events in my life and experience with just a poem, or even a picture. Ive talked about the different teachers that Ive had and how each one of them has impacted me the most and their style of teaching. While in class the other day we talked about how we would teach our class and why we would teach it that way, certain techniques just had more of an impact on me than others. Writing an essay has let me express my feelings the way I wanted to express them and I am happy that I got to express it in this form. I tried to take advantage of writing an essay by using some advantages being: Im familiar with the formatting, you really have no boundaries, no page limit, no word limit and I was able to choose my own words in how you would like to convey the message unlike in poems where you rhyme majority of the time, so your vocabulary is very limited and I didnt want to feel limited in my expressing of my literacy experience. Everyone is familiar with an essay and they know what to look for as far as how an essay should be formatted and it would be easy for them to grasp the message. Writing this essay brought up a lot of memories and I felt like I was telling someone a story about my life and how I learned to read, write and communicate.
