COURSE DESCRIPTION: Course Description : The course includes introducing general surgical course ,concentrating on basic surgical science that are necessary to be provide to the medical students to allow the student to be well oriented while starting history taking and clinical examination. Course Objectives : Understanding principles of general surgery including both basic science and clinical surgical practice, by improving clinical skills at history taking and approaching patients in the surgical wards, At the end of the course the student will be expected to be able to apply their basic clinical skills to approach cases and be able to analyze problem based cases. Also students expected to know all the information about basic surgical problems like bleeding, burns, wound and wound healing ect.

EXPECTATIO S A D POLICIES This section includes specific information about policies relevant to the class and indicates the expectations or requirements of the students associated with them. Attendance Students are expected to attend all classes and to complete all assignments for courses in which they are enrolled. An absence does not relieve the student of the responsibility to complete all assignments. If an absence is associated with a university-sanctioned activity, the instructor will provide an opportunity for assignment make-up. However, it is the instructors decision to provide, or not to provide, make-up work related to absences for any other reason. Academic Honesty Plagiarism. In speaking or writing, plagiarism is the act of passing someone elses work off as ones own. In addition, plagiarism is defined as using the essential style and manner of expression of a source as if it were ones own. If there is any doubt, the student should consult his/her instructor or any manual of term paper or report writing. Violations of academic honesty include: 1. Presenting the exact words of a source without quotation marks; 2. Using another students computer source code or algorithm or copying a laboratory report; or 3. Presenting information, judgments, ideas, or facts summarized from a source without giving credit. Cheating. Cheating includes using or relying on the work of someone else in an inappropriate manner. It includes, but is not limited to, those activities where a student: 1. Obtains or attempts to obtain unauthorized knowledge of an examinations contents prior to the time of that examination. 2. Copies another students work or intentionally allows others to copy assignments, examinations,

source codes or designs; 3. Works in a group when she/he has been told to work individually; 4. Uses unauthorized reference material during an examination; or 5. Have someone else take an examination or takes the examination for another

Instruction methodology: Theoretical lectures will be presented by the specialist teachers using data show presentation supplemented with different illustrations using diagrams and pictures. Interactive lecture presentation used allowing active sharing of the students with the lecturer about the lecture contents so students should read the subject before the lecture. A / Lectures of Dr. Hewa :


1. Preoperative preparation of the patient: To learn the goal of the preparation, how to prepare otherwise healthy patients, how to prepare patients with co morbidity, and to be familiar with Informed consent, ASA classification of anaesthesia, and lastly to learn about instructions given to the patients 2. Day care surgery: To learn what is day care surgery, benefits, goals and criteria of patient selection and discharge criteria from day care surgery 3. Bedside procedures: to learn how to prepare, check equipments, and do different bedside procedures which will help the patients on different levels of ABC of surgery i.e. venus canullation, CVP line. Tracheostomy, Chest tube, Endotracheal entubation,etc. , with aid of number of videos for each procedure. 4. Minimal access surgery: To learn the general line of these type of surgery like: laparoscopy, single umbilical triport laparoscopy, NOTES and Da Vinci in laparoscopic surgery, with a video for teach procedure. 5. Bites and Stinges: Learning about epidemiology, presentation, grading, first aids and managements of human bite, animal bites, and snake bite> Scorpion sting, spider sting, wasp, bee, stings 6. Special Infections Talking about some acute and chronic specific infections like tuberculosis, tetanus, gangrene, HIV and aids and Learning about epidemiology, presentation, and managements

7. Learning about epidemiology, presentation, and managements of Parasitic investations which may present as surgical problems i.e.; ascariasis causing intestinal obstruction, Hydatid cyst presenting as a ma mass any where in the body. How to treat their surgical presentations

Grading Assessment methods Grading scale: 90% to 100% = EXCELLENT 80% to 89% = VERY GOOD 70% to 79% = GOOD 60% to 69% = MEDIUM 50% to 59% = FAIR < 50 % = FAIL Percentage/point allocation per activity. assignment or exam: 60% of marks will be awarded from the theoretical examination (paper exam. Including short assay and MCQ questions) and 40% of the marks will be collected from the clinical assessment.
