Features:
Diagnostics/Performance Logs/Event Logs Merlin is capable of retrieving the current configuration of the unit, RF performance, traffic statistics under the Diagnostics option. Diagnostics are a snapshot of the current operating status of the device. Previous RF performance of the link is retrieved within the Performance logs. The performance logs are polled at a fixed rate defined by the user. By default, performance logs are polled every 15 minutes. Most events that have happened to the device are recorded under the Event Logs, as they occur. The first 150 entries for performance logs and event logs are retrieved by default. To retrieve all the logs, deselect Retrieve First 150 (Approx.) of Event and Performance Logs. Monitoring Tool The link Monitor Tool allows you to monitor the performance (RSL, SNR, Eb/No, Equalizer stress, Block Errors, Ingress/Egress data rate) of up to 5 links (10 devices) and outputs the values into an Excel (comma delimited) format. With this tool, you can adjust monitoring time (5 mins unlimited) and polling interval (in seconds). Network Utilities The Network Utilities option is also referred to as the Network Scan. The Network Utilities tool provides the user with detailed information of the link in an Excel spreadsheet on defined units. The units are defined by the user by their IP address created in an IP File (text file). Compatible with AirPair, Horizon Compact, Horizon DUO, Quantum, APX104E/APX104E. Upgrade Utility With Merlin, you are able to upgrade/downgrade the system licensed speed and the Application OMNI and Modem ONMI. For most cases, the Application OMNI should be loaded before the Modem OMNI. PLEASE REFER TO RELEASE NOTES FOR EXCEPTIONS. Note: The frequency file cannot be upgraded using Merlin; it must be upgraded via FTP. Compatible with Horizon DUO, Horizon Compact, SDU. Factory Reset Provides step by step instructions on resetting a unit back to the factory settings. This is done by interrupting the boot cycle, placing the unit in boot mode and clearing the configuration within the unit. This factory reset preserves the license information and management port configuration. Discovery Merlin is capable of scanning a specified network interface and discovering any unrouted Horizon device, regardless of IP. This works on a Layer 2 network (switches), but will NOT pass through a Layer 3 device (routers).

Compatibility
Merlin is a Windows based program and is compatible with most current Win32 OS (XP, Vista, Windows 7). It is not compatible with Mac OS.

Select PC Interface

Requirements
WinPcap is required for any Layer 2 MAC Connectivity, so it must be installed for most Merlin features. WinPcap is freeware and can be downloaded at: http://www.winpcap.org/install/default.htm

How to Launch
Windows XP Double Click on Merlin, a warning message will then appear to ensure you have WinPcap for Layer 2 MAC Connectivity (ver.2.xx and earlier) Windows Vista/7 Right Click on Merlin, select Run as Administrator. A warning message will then appear to ensure you have WinPcap for Layer 2 MAC Connectivity (ver.2.xx and earlier). NOTE: Merlin is NOT compatible with Mac OS or Linux/Unix.

Discover Horizon Units

Overview

Discovery
Merlin has Layer 2 MAC Connectivity capabilities. With this capability, a user is able to discover Horizon units without being within the same IP range as the units. A Layer 2 MAC Connection is not based on IP addressing, therefore a Horizon unit can be discovered by a PC, regardless of the IP address, as long as it is unrouted (directly connected or on same network segment). Discovering a Horizon unit: 1) From Merlins home screen, click Select PC Interfaces 2) Click List Available Interfaces 3) Select the interface on your PC that you will be using to connect to the unit (eg. your NIC card, if connecting via Ethernet cable) 4) Click the Discover Horizon Units Tab 5) Click the Discover Horizon Units Button A warning message will then appear, click OK to continue 6) The screen will return a list of any available Horizon units, along with their IP settings, MAC address, and Serial number. This screen can be used to connect to the units directly, using Telnet or HTTP (Web).

Connecting to Horizon Unit via Merlin

You will need to ensure that your PC is within the same TCP/IP subnet as the discovered unit that you wish to connect to. Example: If the discovered unit has an IP of 192.168.10.100 with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0, then you will need to change the IP in your PC to 192.168.x.x (not 192.168.10.100) with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 Once your IP is within the same subnet, click on the unit within the Discovery window. This should populate the fields at the bottom of the Discovery page. You can now click the Telnet button to open a telnet session, or the HTTP button to open a web session.
