Cannon Design Research Initiatives and Findings

Our Research Initiative aims to compel the persistent development and application of new knowledge and creative invention in our work. Cannon Design Research Initiatives and Findings Our Research Initiative aims to compel the persistent development and application of new knowledge and creative invention in our work. This process will provide increasing distinction and competitive differentiation for our client partners and our firm. We view our design research as both the foundation and the fuel of our Ideas Based Practice culture. While innovation will always be an intrinsic part of the design process, it is our conviction that the discipline necessary to commissioned work typically does not support the full depth of exploration and experimentation required to thoroughly expand the traditional boundaries of design process. Our Research Initiative is a response to this challenge. Our initiative is composed of four interdependent components: primary research; secondary research; prototyping and invention and futures platforms. Primary research is the development and documentation of new knowledge through proven qualitative and quantitative methods. Secondary research is the access and review of existing knowledge. Prototyping and invention is the conduct of specific design initiatives related to both the processes and products of our work. Futures platforms are the ongoing deep-dives into the variables influencing strategic investment in our core markets. The action plan for the research is evolving in collaboration with the global practice leaders focusing on the issues that could transform our markets. Our current activities are progressing simultaneously on a number of paths including current and prior healthcare, laboratory/science and education research; integration of a research component in both the healthcare and education fellowships; outreach to establish university research partnerships; and the development of a hypothesis based project design process. The research team is evolving and now includes PhD level, building typology and discipline staff working to nurture and build a practitioner/research practice model.
