Geometry 9.4: 1 9.4 Inscribed Angles and Arcs Steve Keller Honors Geometry Friday 02/24/2012 I. Goals: G-C.2.

. Identify and describe relationships among inscribed angles, radii, and chords. Include the relationship between central, inscribed, and circumscribed angles; inscribed angles on a diameter are right angles; the radius of a circle is perpendicular to the tangent where the radius intersects the circle. G-C.5. Derive using similarity the fact that the length of the arc intercepted by an angle is proportional to the radius, and define the radian measure of the angle as the constant of proportionality; derive the formula for the area of a sector. G-C.3. Construct the inscribed and circumscribed circles of a triangle, and prove properties of angles for a quadrilateral inscribed in a circle. Objectives: Students will conclude that an inscribed angle is half of its intercepted arc. Students will be able to compute the measure of an inscribed angle given its intercepted arc and vice versa. Students will be able to draw inscribed polygons. Materials: Chalkboard/Marker board Luke Skywalkers Light Saber Geometers Sketch Pad Motivation: Today we are going to learn how to deal with angles whose vertex is not on the center. Lesson Procedure: 1. Inscribed a. Vertex lies on circle Remind students-circles are hollow rings Probe for what it is, but may have to give to them. (Angles where the vertex is ON the circle.) A central angle is twice as big as an inscribed angle with the same endpoints or arc measure. b. Inscribed polygons Probe to get out of students, should be able to get them to get it after inscribed angles. (Polygons where all the vertices are ON the circle) c. Draw random inscribed triangle d. Geometry 9.4: 2 Fill in arc measurements for them and then begin to fill in angles with same measurements Wait! We cant have a triangle with 360 degrees, so what is the true relationship between an inscribed angle and its arc? e. Easy HW example: inscribed angle (20) opens to arc (3a-8) 2. Advanced Inscribed Angles a. In ONE circle, if 2 inscribed angles intercept the same arc, then they are congruent draw thisform bow tie triangles b. Draw a diameter and a point on circle. Now connect the dots to make a triangle. Ask: What type of triangle is this? (Right) c. Draw any random inscribed quadrilateral. What can we say about opposite angles? Opposite angles are supplementary because of inscribed angles. Show with colored chalk. 3. Regular Polygons a. Regular means every side is congruent, and every angle is congruent Equilateral triangles, squares, etc. b. Regular shapes are guaranteed to fit on a circle (not in a circle (vocabulary)) 4. Assessment: Questioning throughout HW: 9.4 pg 470 #20-45
