Research Paper - Education

ABSTRACT In the present investigation an attempt has been made to study D.Ed. teacher trainees computer phobia. It is found that the entire sample of teachers (n =100) has different levels of computer phobia. There is no significant difference in computer phobia of male and female D.Ed. teacher trainees. It was found that there is no significant difference in the computer phobia of D.Ed. teacher trainees attended computer class and who did not attended computer class. Key words : Computer Phobia, D.Ed. teacher trainees, Computer Skills, ICT. Introduction: Today's world is changing very rapidly. This is the era of science and technology. Computer is being a part of the fabric of education in India. Due to this advanced technology not only the less time is required for work done but also one could get tremendous information. The computer entered into the field of education but there is some limitations in the use of computer such as lack of computer trained teachers, lack of computers in institution, scarcity of place, fear of handling computer, due to all these things computer remains new subject till date because computer requires update knowledge.

According to John Adam's, 'Our schools are information shops and our teachers are information managers.' No doubt the use of computer is very essential to today's teacher trainees. In this era of ICT the process of teaching and learning becomes very effective with the use of computer. Every nation wants to produce students who ultimately become the knowledge workers in their own economy to be global citizens. Education is the only means to incorporate ICT in the developmental aspects of the society. ICT only helps to produce powerful manpower to face the challenge of future. So every student in schools must have computer knowledge. It requires competent teachers having computer knowledge. Need of the Study : D.Ed. teacher trainees are from different parts of society. Some D.Ed. teacher trainees are from rural and urban areas. The minimum eligibility for D.Ed. is twelve passed. So these students didn't have adequate knowledge of computer. Many of them are rarely using computers. Due to many reasons, they have fear of operating computer because it is electronic machine about computer. Ignorance of teachers towards computer subject in schools creates fear about computer. Many students have personal computers but due to the fear and inadequate knowledge of computer they have always anxiety about operating computer. This fear is called computer phobia. Several studies have been done on computer anxiety. Kumaran (1997) has studied the anxiety and attitudes of teachers towards computer. Viji Sanjana (2000) conducted a study on computer self-confidence and computer experience in relation to computer related attitudes and commitment to learning among Higher Secondary students. Sivakumar, R. (2000) investigated computer awareness among higher Secondary students. The study revealed that, there is no significant difference between the boys and girls in computer awareness. Ajayi , A. et al. (2001) investigated the prevalence and correlation of computer related behavioural variable among students and staff of the university of Ibadan. Nigeria. Gilchoi, Jan Ligon and Jim Ward (2002) investigated the prevalence of computer anxiety by area of practice hours or weekly use, access to equipment and availabilities of training for social workers in South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina. Lilly Epsi Bai and Gnanadevan (2002) conducted a study on, 'Teacher's anxiety

towards computer' and found that gender, age and the locality of the school do not influence teacher anxiety towards computer. Limitations of the Study : The sample for the present study consisted of only 100 D.Ed. teacher trainees from Adhyapak Vidyalaya Shirpur. Due to lack of time, the investigator was not able to include more teachers in the sample. Purpose of the Study : The present study was undertaken to know the computer fear in the D.Ed. teacher trainees from tribal area Shirpur. R. C.Patel Adhyapak Vidyalaya. Statement of the Problem : A study of D.Ed. teacher trainees Computer Phobia. Definitions of the Terms : a) Computer Phobia - Fear of learning about computers and its application. b) D.Ed. Teacher trainees - For the purpose of this study the teacher trainees were from Marathi medium Adhypak Vidyalya, Shirpur of Dhule District, Maharashtra. Objectives of the study : The following objectives were formulated for the present study. 1. To study the levels of the D.Ed. teacher trainees computer phobia. 2. To study if there is any significant difference between thea. Male and Female D.Ed. teacher trainees. b. D.Ed. teacher trainees who have attended or not attended any computer classes in respect of their computer phobia. Hypotheses: 1. There is no significant difference between levels of computer phobia of D.Ed. teacher trainees. 2. There is no significant difference between mean scores male and female D.Ed. teacher trainees towards computer phobia. 3. There is no significant difference between levels the D.Ed. teacher trainees who have attended or not attended any computer classes in respect of their computer phobia.

Sample: A sample of 100 D.Ed. teacher trainees from R.C.Patel Adhyapak Vidyalaya Constituted the sample for the present study. Methodology : In order to realize the above said objectives Normative survey method was used. Tools Used : The investigator has used computer phobia scale by Rajasekar and Vaiyapuri as a research tool in the present study. The questionnaire consisted of 29 statements. This tool was in English Language. The researchers translated the tool in Marathi and checked it by experts. Each item provided five responses. The responses were expressed on five point scale strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagree, strongly disagree and the weight age for positive and negative statements are 4,3,2,1,0 and 0,1,2,3,4,respectively. The reliability and validity of the scale was determined and was found 0.88 and 0.94 respectively. Statistical Techniques used : For the analysis of data the investigator has used simple statistical technique such as Mean, standard Deviation and 't' test. Table -1, shows that, the different level of computer phobia of D.Ed. teacher trainees among 100 teacher trainees three teachers has very low, thirty eight teachers have low, fifty eight teachers have Neutral, and only one teacher have high level of computer phobia. It is observed that, not a single trainees has very higher level of computer phobia. Table -2 : Showing the significant difference between computer phobia of male and female D.Ed. teacher trainees.

Table 2 shows that the calculated t value is 2.5 is greater than the table value 1.98 at 0.05 levels. So the null hypothesis is accepted. Hence there is no significant difference between computer phobia of male and female D.Ed. teacher trainees. Table - 3 :Showing the significant difference between computer phobia D.Ed. teacher trainees who have attended or not attended any computer classes.

Table 3 shows that the calculated t value 12.53 is greater than the table 1.96 at 0.05 level. So null hypothesis is accepted. Hence there is not significant difference in the computer phobia of D.Ed. teacher trainees attended computer class and not attended computer class. Conclusion : It is observed that very few D.Ed. teacher trainees have very low and very high computer phobia. The number of D.Ed. teacher trainees having neutral computer phobia is more in number than the D.Ed. teacher trainees having low computer phobia. The D.Ed. training college must provide all the facilities such as computer lab and well trained teachers. So that the D.Ed teacher trainees can have hands an experience in computer skill. The present study indicates that there is no significant difference in computer phobia of male and female D.Ed. teacher trainees. There is no significant difference in the computer phobia of D.Ed. teacher trainees attended computer class not attended computer class.
