CULTURAL WEEK 2022-2012: MAUI AND THE SUN A long time ago, our days were very short.

The sun - Te Ra travelled very fast across the sky. The children had no time to play, the men no time to hunt, and the women no time to work. Everybody was angry. One day, a young man called Maui said to the village Dont worry, I go to the sun and make him slow down. The people of the village chanted to make magic ropes to catch the strong sun. Maui went with some brave warriors to catch Te Ra. Maui and the men waited with the ropes outside the hole where Te Ra lived. Suddenly, the ground started to feel warmer and began to glow red. Te Ra was coming! Maui began to chant a powerful karakia (song) to protect the warriors and himself from the heat. The light grew brighter and brighter and suddenlyTe Ra came out of the hole! Pull! shouted Maui, and he and the men pulled the ropes quickly over the surprised sun. Te Ra was very strong, the men had to work hard to control him. Maui jumped forward and began to beat the angry sun with his Mere. Te Ra screamed with pain and frustration. Stop hitting me and let me go immediately! said Te Ra. NO! Shouted Maui Why do you do this to me? Why do you beat me? said Te Ra It is because you run across the sky so fast, there isnt enough time or light in the day to do anything! Everyone is angry! If you promise to go slower, well set you free! said Maui. Maui started to hit Te Ra again. Ae! Ae! Please stop. Ill go more slowly, I promise! said Te Ra

Maui stopped. Okay then, If you break your promise we will come back! said Maui The men let go of the ropes and Te Ra rose slowly, he was tired. In the village the children were laughing and the women were weaving many beautiful baskets. There was fresh fish for their hungry bellies. Everyone was happy because the days were longer and they thanked Maui and the brave warriors.
