Now the time has come when you need to set off a long quotation for a close textual reading. When you have reached the point for your offset quotation, hit return to move your curser to the next line and click on Format from the top menu, choose Paragraph, set the left indentation to 1 inch, and click OK. At this point, go ahead and type your passage remembering to type it, word for word, exactly as it appears in the test. Remember, also, to keep your text doublespaced, so there is no need to change anything in the spacing format. Any quotation that runs more than four lines in your paper should be set off in this manner. Do not place quotation marks around long quotations that are set off in this manner, and place the parenthetical citation after the end punctuation. (2) When you have finished typing the long quotation, move to the next line and reset your left indentation to 0. If you need to reproduce more than one paragraph in a long quotation, indent the first lines of each paragraph another inch (three spaces). Sometimes when you are using quotations, there are bits of dialogue or other quoted material within your chosen quotation. When this happens, use single quotation marks to replace the double quotation marks from the original text. If you end your quotation with quoted material from the text, use a single quotation mark followed by a double (Smith 3).
