Dear Reader, This is a time of great crisis around the world: the worst economic crisis in my lifetime, never-ending wars and conflicts in many nations, new and old disease epidemics that kill untold millions, global environmental harm, billions of people mired in desperate poverty, and a great deal more. What can be done to address these many crises? Berrett-Koehlers perspective is that action is needed at all levelssocietal, organizational, and individualand across many dimensions: economic, political, environmental, spiritual, and others. We need to change our institutions, our leadership, our priorities, our consciousness, and much more. Dealing with only one aspect will not adequately respond to the complexity and interconnectedness of these crises. The new publications announced in this catalog address the many levels and dimensions of change that are needed in the world. BK Currents titles focus on the societal level of change. BK Business titles focus on the organizational level of change. BK Life titles focus on the individual level of change. Some titles will help people improve their personal lives and relationships. Other titles will help people be more effective leaders, managers, and change agents. And other titles offer new paths to national and global transformation. Unlike many publishers, Berrett-Koehler does not bring a neutral or whatever will sell stance to our publishing program. Instead, our publishing is guided by our mission: Creating a World That Works for All. Berrett-Koehler is a community of authors, readers, publishing professionals, sales partners, and many supporters around the world who are dedicated to advancing this mission, both through our publications and through how we do our work and run our business. We hope that you will join us in this mission. And we hope that you will find the new titles in this catalog of interest and help spread the word about them. Sincerely,

Agenda for a New Economy

From Phantom Wealth to Real Wealth Why Wall Street Cant Be Fixed and How to Replace It

By the author of the bestsellers When Corporations Rule the World and The Great Turning Offers bold economic reforms that attack the underlying cause of the current economic collapse, not just its symptoms A radical but achievable program that restores and builds on the fundamental strengths of the American economy
Todays economic crisis is the worst since the Great Depression. However, as David Korten shows, the steps being taken to address itincluding pouring trillions of dollars into bailouts for the Wall Street institutions that created the messdo nothing to deal with the reality of a failed economic system. Its like treating cancer with Band-Aids. And the financial collapse now in the public spotlight is only the tip of the iceberg. The systems social and environmental failures may ultimately be even more destructive. Korten identifies the deeper sources of the failure: Wall Street institutions that have perfected the art of creating wealth without producing anything of real value phantom wealth. Its major players engage in speculative trading, buy into asset bubbles, create debt pyramids, and engage in predatory lending practices. Their seeming success created an economic mirage that led us to believe the economy was expanding exponentially, even as our economic, social, and natural capital eroded and most people struggled ever harder to make ends meet. Our hope lies not with Wall Street, Korten argues, but with Main Street, which creates real wealth from real resources to meet real needs. He outlines an agenda to liberate the latent entrepreneurial energies of Main Street from Wall Streets deadly grip and bring into being a new economylocally based, community oriented, and devoted to creating a better life for all, not simply increasing profits. It will require courageous and imaginative changes to how we measure economic success, organize our financial system, even the very way we create money. It is a challenging but practical agenda, summarized in Kortens version of the economic address to the nation he wishes Barack Obama were able to deliver. At last, a book by one of our most brilliant economic thinkers that outlines the real causes ofand solutions tothe current economic crisis. David Korten inspires us to take actions to create a more just and sustainable world for ourselves and future generations. Helping

How to Offer, Give, and Receive Help

By the bestselling author of Career Anchors (over 431,000 copies sold) and Organizational Culture and Leadership (over 153,000 sold) A penetrating analysis of the psychological and social dynamics of helping relationships Offers specific techniques for determining what type of help to offer and how best to offer it
Helping is a fundamental human activity, but it can also be a frustrating one. All too often, to our bewilderment, our sincere offers of help are resented, resisted, or refusedand we often react the same way when people try to help us. Why is it so difficult to provide or accept help? How can we make the whole process easier? Many different words are used for helping: assisting, aiding, advising, caregiving, coaching, consulting, counseling, guiding, mentoring, supporting, teaching, and many more. In this seminal book on the topic, corporate culture and organizational development guru Ed Schein analyzes the social and psychological dynamics common to all types of helping relationships, explains why help is often not helpful, and shows what any would-be helpers must do to ensure that their assistance is both welcomed and genuinely useful. The moment of asking for and offering help is a delicate and complex one, fraught with inequities and ambiguities. Schein helps us navigate that moment so we avoid potential pitfalls, mitigate power imbalances, and establish a solid foundation of trust. He identifies three roles a helper can play, explaining which one is nearly always the best starting point if we are to provide truly effective help. So that readers can determine exactly what kind of help is needed, he describes an inquiry process that puts the helper and the client on an equal footing, encouraging the client to open up and engage and giving the helper much better information to work with. And he shows how these techniques can be applied to teamwork and to organizational leadership. Illustrated with examples from many types of relationshipshusbands and wives, doctors and patients, consultants and clientsHelping is a concise, definitive analysis of what it takes to establish successful, mutually satisfying helping relationships. Edgar H. Schein is a Sloan Fellows Professor of Management Emeritus and senior lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He is the author of fourteen books as well as numerous articles in professional journals. Among many other honors, he is the recipient of the Distinguished Contribution or Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society for Training & Development and the Everett Cherrington Hughes Award for Careers Scholarship from the Careers Division of the Academy of Management.

Foreword by Thomas E. Lovejoy, Founder of the PBS series Nature

Right Relationship
Building a Whole Earth Economy
Outlines a bold new model for a just and flourishing Earth Analyzes why so many well-meaning reform efforts fall short Explains what everyone can do to make this new model a reality
Our current economic systemwhich assumes endless growth and limitless potential wealthflies in the face of the fact that the Earths resources are finite. The result is increasing destruction of the natural world and growing, sometimes lethal, tension between rich and poor, global north and south. Trying to fix problems piecemeal is not the solution. We need a comprehensive new vision of an economy that can serve people and all of lifes commonwealth. Peter G. Brown and Geoffrey Garver use the core Quaker principle of right relationshipinteracting in a way that is respectful to all and that aids the common goodas the foundation for a new economic model. Right Relationship poses five basic questions: What is an economy for? How does it work? How big is too big? Whats fair? And how can it best be governed? Brown and Garver expose the antiquated, shortsighted, and downright dangerous assumptions that underlie our current answers to these questions, as well as the shortcomings of many current reform efforts. They propose new answers that combine an acute awareness of ecological limits with a fundamental focus on fairness and a concern with the spiritual, as well as material, well-being of the human race. Brown and Garver describe new forms of global governance that will be needed to get and keep the economy in right relationship. Individual citizens can and must play a part in bringing this relationship with life and the world into being. Ultimately the economy, as indeed life itself, is a series of interconnected relationships. An economy based on the idea of right relationship offers not only the promise of a bountiful future but also an opportunity to touch the fullness of human meaning and, some would say, the presence of the Divine. We are all stewards of the Earth but often lack specific information and advice on what we can dopersonally and collectively. Right Relationship: Building a Whole Earth Economy provides a wonderful guide for all of us. Jimmy Carter

Thinking Big

Progressive Ideas for a New Era

Features contributions from such leading organizations as Green for All, the Institute for Policy Studies, the Commonweal Institute, the Progressive States Network, the Economic Policy Institute, Demos, and the Drum Major Institute Offers innovative solutions to critical challenges such as implementing health-care reform, greening the economy, expanding the middle class, extending educational opportunities, and more Concise, visionary, and pragmatica true blueprint for change
Times are changing. Instead of obsessing about what theyre against, progressives have begun to think about what theyre forto prepare once again to play their role as agents of bold ideas and political and social transformation. Finding new confidence and imagination, they have begun to renew their political capital. The essays in this volume draw on that new store of capital to sketch the outlines of a progressive agenda for 21st-century America. Authors such as Van Jones, Dean Baker, Andrea Batista Schlesinger and Miles Rapoport cover a wide array of topics and, in their policy recommendations, present a few contrasting ideas. But all these essays reflect a belief in the need for fundamental change. The problems discussed here cannot be solved, the authors agree, through charity, through volunteerism, or even by well-meaning local and state governments, though surely all have a role. The contributors make the case for the kind of concerted action that can only come through the agency of our national government. They argue that we need programs that serve our national and international needs and encourage faith in our public institutions, creating a positive cycle of political change and space for further reform. There are many good reasons to be worried at this critical moment in history. To navigate these troubled times, we need a rare combination of ideas, action, resolve, and leadership to meet the challenges that lie before us. Thinking Big is an indispensable piece of that puzzle, arriving just when its most needed. The Progressive Ideas Network is an alliance of multi-issue think tanks and activist organizations working together to amplify the power of ideas in advancing todays progressive movement. James Lardner is a senior fellow at Demos, a national, nonpartisan public policy research organization. He is a coauthor of Up to Our Eyeballs: How Shady Lenders and Failed Economic Policies Are Drowning Americans in Debt, a coeditor of and a contributor to Inequality Matters: The Growing Economic Divide in America and Its Poisonous Consequences, and a coeditor (with Chuck Collins) of Inequality.org. Theory U

Learning from the Future as It Emerges

Shows how leaders can access the deepest source of inspiration and vision Includes dozens of tested exercises, practices, and real-world examples
We live in a time of massive institutional failure, one that requires a new consciousness and a new collective leadership capacity. In this groundbreaking book, Otto Scharmer invites us to see the world in new ways and in so doing discover a revolutionary approach to leadership. What we pay attention to and how we pay attention is key to what we create. What prevents us from attending to situations more effectively is our blind spot, the inner place from which our attention and intention originate. It is blind because we are unaware of how it functions and the enormous influence it has on our perceptions and hence our actions. By moving through Scharmers U process, we consciously access the blind spot and learn to connect to our authentic Selfthe deepest source of knowledge and inspirationin the realm of presencing, a term coined by Scharmer that combines the concepts of presence and sensing. Here we are able to pay attention in a way that allows us to experience the opening of our minds, our hearts, and our wills. Through this process we shift our awareness, connect with our best future possibility, and gain the ability to realize it. Based on ten years of research and action learning and interviews with over 150 practitioners and thought leaders, Theory U develops and explores a new territory of scientific research, institutional change, and transformational leadership practice. In exploring the complex dynamics of the blind spot, Scharmer shares much from his own personal and professional life and draws from a rich diversity of compelling stories and examples. And he includes dozens of exercises and practices that allow leadersand entire organizationsto participate fully in creating and bringing forth the future that is seeking to emerge through us. Scharmers Theory U model of how to open our mind, emotions, and will to moments of discovery and mutual understanding is profound and much needed. Edgar Schein, Sloan Fellows Professor of Management Emeritus, MIT Sloan School of Management Pushes the envelope of current leadership wisdom and invites you to explore the strongest leadership tool there is: yourself. Ralf Schneider, Head of Global Talent Management, PricewaterhouseCoopers C. Otto Scharmer is a senior lecturer at MIT and the founding chair of ELIAS (Emerging Leaders for Innovation Across Sectors), a program linking twenty leading global institutions from business, government, and civil society. Intrinsic Motivation at Work

What Really Drives Employee Engagement Second Edition, Revised and Expanded
New edition of a pioneering book on the most powerful and effective engagement strategy Includes a wealth of new diagnostic and assessment tools Shows managers and leaders how to tap into their own intrinsic motivators as well as those of their employees
In todays organizations engagement is absolutely vital. With hierarchies flattened and globalization accelerating the pace of change, workers are required to be a greater source of problem-solving creativity than ever before. Keeping them motivated, using them well, and retaining them has become an important source of competitive advantage, even a requirement for survival. And younger workers in particular are demanding more from their jobs than just a paycheckif theyre not engaged by what they do, theyll walk. In this new edition of his classic book, Kenneth Thomas draws on the latest research findings to provide a solid framework to help you understand and build employee engagement. The key is intrinsic motivation. Only intrinsic rewardsrewards that come directly from the work itselfencourage the profound commitment and sense of ownership needed for a truly engaged and innovative workforce. Thomas identifies four intrinsic rewards: a feeling of meaningfulness or purpose in your work, the ability to choose activities that make sense to you, the opportunity to do competent work in your chosen area, and a sense that youre progressing toward a goal. And he provides a diagnostic framework to evaluate which intrinsic rewards need boosting and how to boost them. The second edition has been revised and updated throughout, with an expanded section on how leaders can identify and manage their own intrinsic rewards and new tools, tips, and practices for encouraging intrinsic motivation in others. Rewards like higher pay or a nicer officeextrinsic rewardsare ultimately skin deep. You dont build real engagement by bribing people. Intrinsic motivators speak to peoples deepest needs and aspirations. They are by far the most effective basis for developing an engagement strategy that will create dedicated, enthusiastic, and loyal employees who will see the organizations success as identical to their own. This new edition is even more timely and relevant than the first. Before you work another day, read this book so you know how you can make the most of what drives you and others. Foreword by Deepak Chopra

The Living Universe

Where Are We? Who Are We? Where Are We Going?

By the author of the classic book Voluntary Simplicity (150,000 sold) Brings together cutting-edge science and ancient spiritual wisdom to demonstrate that the universe is a living, sentient system and that we are an integral part of it Explores the power of this new paradigm to move humanity toward a sustainable and promising future
Science has traditionally regarded the universe as made up mostly of inert matter and empty space. At one time this point of view was liberating, part of the Enlightenment-born rationalism that helped humanity free itself from superstition and fear and achieve extraordinary intellectual and technological breakthroughs. But this paradigm has outlived its usefulness. It has led to rampant materialism and environmental degradationif only we are alive, then the inanimate stuff of the universe should be ours to exploit. But we now know that not only is the view of a dead universe destructive, it is also inaccurate and misleading. In The Living Universe, Duane Elgin brings together evidence from cosmology, biology, physics, and even his participation in NASA-sponsored psychic experiments to show that the universe is permeated by a living field and that we are always in communion with that field of aliveness whether we are conscious of it or not. This is a world-view that, as Elgin explains, is shared by virtually every spiritual tradition, and the implications of it are vast and deep. In a living system, each part is integral to the whole, so each of us is intimately connected to the entire universe. Elgin eloquently demonstrates how our identity manifests itself on a whole series of levels, from subatomic to galactic. We are, he writes, far more than biological beingswe are beings of cosmic connection and participation. To confront our ongoing planetary crisis of dwindling resources and escalating conflict, we need to move past an ideology of separation, competition, and exploitation. Duane Elgin asks us to see humanity sharing in the same field of aliveness, to discover how to live sustainably and harmoniously within the living universe. A masterful, potent, and luminous contribution to both human knowledge and spiritual awakening. Jean Houston, cofounder of the Foundation for Mind Research and author of twenty-six books, including A Passion for the Possible Duane Elgin is a visionary, author, speaker, and educator. The Compassionate Life

Walking the Path of Kindness
By the author of the international bestseller Remarkable Recovery A profound and deeply personal meditation on arguably the most important question there is: How can we be kinder to each other and create a more compassionate world? Written in a friendly, often humorous style and filled with stories of people who demonstrate the meaning and the practice of compassion
With a keen balance of hope and skepticism, Marc Barasch sets out on a journey to the heart of compassion, discovering its power to change who we are and the society we have become. He describes encounters with empathetic apes and with Buddhist monks whose brain scans prove the power of compassion practice, with a man who donated a kidney to a stranger and another who forgave his daughters murderer, with teenage Palestinian and Israeli girls trying to wage peace, even with astronomers trying to send a missive to E.T. that were not only clever but kind. With unfailing curiosity, Barasch poses vital questions: What can we learn from exceptionally empathetic people? Can we increase our compassion quotient with practice? How do we open our hearts to those who do us harm? What if the great driving force of our evolution were actually survival of the kindest? He comes up with challenging, ultimately inspiring answers. Drawing on science and spirituality, history and popular culture, button-down business and a high sense of fun, he creates a smart, provocative argument that a simple shift in consciousness changes pretty much everything.

Winning the Global Talent Showdown

How Businesses and Communities Can Partner to Rebuild the Jobs Pipeline
Exposes the root causes of the coming talent crisis facing America, Asia, and Europe Shows how we can prevent the crisis by reinventing the educationto-employment system Includes dozens of examples of how this is already being done across America and around the world
In the next few years the world will be facing a huge talent shortage. Demographic trends in America, Europe, Russia, and Japan are reducing the pool of new workers. As the need for talent grows, Chinas and Indias educational systems wont be able to produce enough qualified graduates for themselves, let alone the rest of the world. But the heart of the problem is that the education-to-employment system worldwide is badly outmoded. Were not producing graduates with the kinds of technical, communications, and thinking skills needed in the 21st century. In Winning the Global Talent Showdown, Ed Gordon surveys the sorry state of the world talent pipeline, with separate chapters on the Americas, Asia, and Europe. Each region faces its own challenges, yet the result is the same: a dramatic shortage of workers who can function in what Gordon calls our cyber-mental age. But this is fundamentally a book about solutions. Gordon argues that we need to completely reinvent our talent-creation systemand some pioneering efforts are already underway. He describes dozens of gateways to the future, innovative partnerships in which local governments, schools, businesses, labor unions, parents, training organizations, community activists, and others are collaborating to develop completely new approaches to education. Based on personal experience, Gordon outlines how concerned citizens can establish these partnerships in their own communities. And he looks down the road to 2020, explaining how we can build on the best of these new ideas so that the jobs pipeline flows freely again. Winning the Global Talent Showdown goes way beyond a mere brace of suggestions. Ed Gordons insightful analyses of the continuing and projected workforce skill deficits are complemented by many practical and common-sense solutions. Kevin Hollenbeck, Assistant Executive Director and Senior Economist, Upjohn Institute for Employment Research Edward Gordon is president of Imperial Consulting Corporation. Imperials clients include Microsoft; Walgreens; Marriott; the U.S. Departments of Labor, Education, and Energy; the U.S. and local Chambers of Commerce; the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals; and many others. Why Am I So Squeezed? (And Other Unsolved Economic Mysteries) Revised and Expanded Edition
Bernstein is chief economic advisor to Vice President Joe Biden Clear, jargon-free answers to economic questions asked by working Americansupdated with new answers to todays financial crisis
How come nobody saw the meltdown coming, and how can we avoid another one? How much can presidents really affect economic outcomes? What is the right balance between government and the market? What does rich mean, and why does it matter? If I hire an immigrant, am I hurting a native-born worker? Should I give that homeless guy a buck? Whats a living wage? Why am I so squeezed? If youd like some straight answers, premier economist Jared Bernstein is here to help. In Crunch he responds to dozens of questions he has fielded from working Americans by email, on blogs, and at events where he speaks. In this updated and expanded paperback edition he adds new questions and takes special aim at dispelling the myths and misunderstandings surrounding the economic collapse. Underlying all these questions is the one big question: how can we best organize our society to provide the things we want and need? Thats what economics is really all about, and Bernstein is tired of Darth Vaders with PhDs turning it into a tool for the rich and powerful. America is a democracy, he writes. And in a democracy, all of usnot just the elites and their scholarly shock troopsget to weigh in on biggies like this. In this lively and irreverent tour through everyday economic mysteries, Bernstein helps us decode economic analysis, navigate through murky ethical quandaries, and make sound economic decisions that reflect our deepest aspirations for ourselves, our families, and our country.

Making the Good Life Last

Four Keys to Sustainable Living
Shows that sustainability, a concept usually associated exclusively with environmentalism, is the key to a truly fulfilling personal life Filled with practical advice as well as thoughtful reflections Illustrated with stories of Schulers own effortsnot always successfulto live a sustainable life, as well as insights from science, literature, and a range of spiritual traditions
So many of us are beset by anxiety, depression, loneliness, and spiritual malaise, tense and unhappy despite our gadgets and goodies. Michael Schuler, leader of the nations largest Unitarian Universalist congregation, says its because, urged on by an aggressively materialist culture, we too often opt for short-term gratification and long-term denial. In this thoughtful and deeply honest book, he helps us find a life path that leads to treasures of perennial value: a beautiful and healthy earth home, enduring relationships, strong communities, work that contributes to the common good, and play that restores our bodies and lifts our souls. Deconstructing the assumption that consumption, stimulation, and constant motion comprise the good life, Schuler urges the wholesale embrace of sustainability as both an operational principle and a life-sustaining core value. His book presents sustainability as a coherent frame of reference that can ground us spiritually, heal us internally, and deepen our relationships. Schuler identifies four behavioral principles for living sustainablyPay Attention, Stay Put, Exercise Patience, and Practice Prudenceand shows how to apply them in our daily lives. He uses stories from his own life to illuminate the rewards and challenges of sustainable living and shares insights from environmentalists, social commentators, writers, poets, businesspeople, and spiritual leaders. Sustainability means more than mere survivalfor individuals, just as for natural and social systems, its the key to thriving rather than burning out. For those seeking a more profoundly satisfying way of life, Schulers heartfelt explorations offer a counter intuitive answer: the sustainable life is the good life. Sustainability isnt only, or even mainly, about light bulbs. Its about patience and prudence and the other virtues described in this bookits about becoming mature as people and as a society. Thats hard work but good work, and this is the manual. Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy and The End of Nature The Reverend Dr. Michael A. Schuler serves as the parish minister of the First Unitarian Society of Madison. During his twenty one-year tenure, the society has grown rapidly to over 1,500 adult members, 500 children, and approximately 200 active affiliates. Trauma Stewardship

An Everyday Guide to Caring for Self While Caring for Others

Offers those who care for others and the planet a way to stay engaged, hopeful, balanced, and healthy when dealing with hardship, suffering, and trauma Deepens readers understanding of the many ways they and their organizations may be impacted by dealing with trauma and suffering Uses moving first-person interviews and even cartoons to illuminate the idea of trauma stewardship
Working to make the world a more hopeful and sustainable place often means having to confront pain, suffering, crisis, and trauma head-on, day in and day out. Over months and years this takes an enormous emotional, psychological, and physical toll, one that were often not even fully aware of until the day we feel like we just cant go on anymore. And our well-being and the work were doing are too important to risk that happening. This book is for all those who notice that they are not the people they once were or who are being told that by their families, friends, colleagues, or pets. Laura van Dernoot Lipsky takes a deep and sympathetic look at the many ways the stress of dealing with trauma manifests itself: feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, diminished creativity, chronic exhaustion, cynicism, and a dozen more. To keep from being overwhelmed, we need to respond to suffering in a thoughtful, intentional waynot by hardening our hearts or by internalizing others struggles as our own but by developing a quality of compassionate presence. This is trauma stewardship. To help achieve this, Lipsky offers a variety of simple and profound practices, drawn from modern psychology and a range of spiritual traditions, that enable us to look carefully at our reactions and motivations and discover new sources of energy and renewal. She includes interviews with successful trauma stewards and even uses New Yorker cartoons to illustrate her points. We can do meaningful work in a way that works for us and for those we serve, Lipsky writes. Taking care of ourselves while taking care of others allows us to contribute to our societies with such impact that we will leave a legacy informed by our deepest wisdom and greatest gifts instead of burdened by our struggles and despair. This book is a gift, a wise and compassionate guide for those who undertake the difficult work of caring for the traumas of the world. Jack Kornfield, author of A Path with Heart Laura van Dernoot Lipsky is a trauma social worker, educator, and consultant. Change Your Questions, Change Your Life

10 Powerful Tools for Life and Work Second Edition, Revised and Expanded
New edition of the word-of-mouth bestseller (over 60,000 sold) that outlined a revolutionary technique for changing your life Extensively revised throughout, with three new chapters and three new tools Written as a quick, easy-to-read story that engages, inspires, and empowers
The first edition of Marilee Adamss book introduced a surprising, life-altering truth: any of us can literally change our lives simply by changing the questions we ask, especially those we ask ourselves. We can ask questions that open us to learning, connection, satisfaction, and success. Or we can ask questions that impede progress and keep us from getting the results we want. Asking What great things could happen today? creates very different expectations, moods, and energy than asking What could go wrong today? Many readers reported that they found themselves asking better questions before they even finished reading the book! This is the key insight that the books hero, Ben Knight, learns from his executive coach as the story of his transformative journey unfolds, eventually leading to breakthroughs that save his career as well as his marriage. His success rests on having become a question man and an inquiring leader rather than a judgmental, know-it-all answer man. In this extensively revised second edition, Adams has made the story even more illuminating and helpful, adding three new chapters as well as three powerful new tools. Change Your Questions, Change Your Life is practical yet simple, giving readers an entertaining, step-by-step guide to a technique that will transform their personal and professional lives. Great results really do begin with great questions Marilee Adams shows you how to ask them! Change Your Questions, Change Your Life provides powerful, practical guidelines that can make a real difference in all our lives.

The Introverted Leader

Building on Your Quiet Strength
Offers a straightforward four-step process for succeeding in the extroverted business world Includes a unique Introverted Leader Quiz to help you get started Filled with inspiring personal stories
In our outgoing, type A business culture, introverts can feel excluded, overlooked, or misunderstood, their reticence mistaken for reluctance, arrogance, or even lack of intelligence. But Jennifer Kahnweiler shows that not only can introversion be managed, it can even be a source of strength. Ask Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, two of the leaders she cites as shy introspectives who have developed ways to thrive in a challenging environment. It is estimated that as many as 40 percent of executives are introverted to at least some extent. Based on conversations with over 100 of these men and women, Kahnweiler lays out a progressive four-step strategy for succeeding in an extroverted world. First, preparation: carefully devise a game plan for any potentially anxietyproducing situation. Then presence: knowing that youre prepared, be completely focused on the present moment or activity. Next, push: with a firm foundation of preparation and presence, go beyond your comfort zone. And finally, practice, practice, practice. After a revealing Introverted Leader Quiz to help you deepen your understanding of where focused improvement will produce maximum results, Kahnweiler shows exactly how to apply the four Ps approach in six areas that are particularly difficult for introverts, such as public speaking, heading up projects, participating in meetings, and more. The goal, she emphasizes, is not personality changeyou work with who you are, not against it. In fact, she shows that introversion can actually be a plus in areas like listening skills and written communication. But as a result of reading this book, leaders and aspiring leaders who find it intimidating to be around people will learn to embrace the experience, rather than see it as something to be avoided or endured, and as a result advance their careers and contribute more fully to their organizations. Finally, a book that recognizes the immense value that introverts bring to the workplace. You will learn how to lead with quiet confidence through powerful personal examples and practical tools. Employee Recognition That Works Second Edition, Revised and Expanded

Completely updated throughout, with new examples and two new chapters Shows why much of the billions of dollars currently spent on recognition is wastedand offers low-cost recognition strategies that really work Full of examples from companies around the world, including Google, Cisco, FedEx Freight, Wells Fargo, Best Buy, the Container Store, and more
Companies spend billions on recognition programsby one estimate, $27 billion on noncash incentives in a single yearand yet last year 65 percent of employees reported they felt unrecognized. How is it that we are spending so much and achieving so little? Cindy Ventrice says its because few organizations understand what makes an employee feel truly recognized. Awards, perks, and privileges dont really motivatepeople dont knock themselves out for a plaque or a parking place. Effective recognition is integrated into the daily routine of the workplace, and the key elements are intangibles: praise, thanks, opportunity for growth, and respect. Ventrice explains what managers must do to make these kinds of rewards specific, relevant, and truly personalall vital aspects of effective recognition. She discusses the importance of peer recognition and even self-recognition too, but in survey after survey, employees report that the recognition they most value comes from their managers and supervisors. In this revised second edition, Ventrice offers new examples of successful recognition programs from around the world and addresses providing effective recognition in an increasingly virtual work environment. And there are two completely new chapters: on understanding cultural differences in reward preferencesgenerational, international, and other factorsand on ensuring that reward practices are perceived as fair and equitable. Make Their Day! reveals what employees should expect from recognition and what managers can do to give morale and productivity a genuine, lasting boost. Essential for managers and supervisors navigating through todays cultural, generational, and economic environment. Simply put, this book will make your job easier and contribute to your success through effective recognition and employee engagement. Cheryl A. Coaching is becoming increasingly popular in organizations today, and with good reason. It is more than providing individuals with enthusiastic support and encouragement. Used correctly, coaching is a powerful tool that will drive performance and support the achievement of career goals. Moreover, coaching delivers benefits to managers and supervisors who master the art of coaching. Relationships with direct reports are strengthened and clarified, and this often translates to increased company loyalty and motivation on the job. Sophie Oberstein provides readers with a coaching pathway that will lead to greater satisfaction on the job as a manager or employee and even in their personal lives as a friend, spouse, or parent. She offers a solid process that begins with preparation for the role of coach, moves to coming to agreement on goals and outcomes, and ends with ways to ensure that positive changes are internalized and made permanent. While those who supervise and manage others will find this book particularly helpful, the activities, exercises, pointers, and tips are designed so that all readers can become more coach-like in their interactions with others. In the end, 10 Steps to Successful Coaching is a book about building a critical business and management skill that a new generation of leaders has increasingly realized is valuable, effective, and key to a highperforming workforce. Leaders as Teachers
Unlock the Teaching Potential of Your Companys Best and Brightest
Outlines a unique approach to leadership development Written by the man who designed and implemented the program over an eight-year period Offers a wealth of proven tools to implement the model
Every business understands the value of connecting its top leaders to other established and high-potential leaders in the organization. Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD), a $6.5 billion medical technology company with 28,000 employees, had its leaders make this vital connection in a unique and highly effective waythrough teaching. Leaders as Teachers chronicles BDs eight-year journey to create and deploy a leadership development program that relied on all top leaders, even its CEO, to train other leaders. The initiative, led by author Edward Betof, BDs vice president and chief learning officer, produced dramatic results, including measurable bottom-line benefits; a stronger, more supportive learning environment; improved communications; a strengthened organizational culture; a more adaptive, change-receptive leadership team; and direct cost savings for the organization. In addition to a compelling story of change, Leaders as Teachers offers a road map for other organizations wishing to implement and benefit from BDs experience. Betof includes detailed advice on how to introduce the leaders-as-teachers program; overcome resistance to change; select, recruit, and train new leaders for the program; and evaluate the effectiveness of the program. The book provides all the tools needed, including detailed plans, worksheets, exercises, complete sample training outlines, and other useful tools that speed the transition to leaders as teachers and take full advantage of BDs extensive experience. Dozens of sidebars throughout the book present the participation experiences of BDs leaders at all levels, frequently asked questions, and personal testimonials of those who have benefited from participation in the leaders-as-teachers program. Edward Betof, EdD, is senior fellow and academic director of the Executive Program in Work-Based Learning Leadership at the Wharton School and the Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania. Citizen Wealth

Winning the Campaign to Save Working Families

By the founder of ACORN, the nations largest grassroots community organization of low- and moderate-income people Goes beyond piecemeal solutions to present a holistic strategy for helping working people establish a solid economic foundation Draws on lessons learned from Rathkes forty years in the field
Americas safety net is torn and tattered. Income inequality continues to growthe gap between rich and poor has expanded fivefold in the last twenty-five years. For millions of working families, achieving basic middle-class comforts has begun to seem as distant a dream as winning the lottery. What is needed, and what veteran organizer and ACORN founder Wade Rathke provides in this hard-hitting new book, is a comprehensive grassroots strategy to create what he calls citizen wealth: an enduring foundation on which working people can build a future that extends beyond paying next months rent. Rathke shares breakthrough strategies that have enabled ACORN and other organizations help people secure the basics of citizen wealtha house and a decent incomeoffering from-the-trenches advice on mounting successful living-wage campaigns, battling unscrupulous and predatory lending practices, and developing new forms of worker organizations to protect wages and benefits. Existing antipoverty programs can provide critical support for citizen wealth-building efforts, but theyre woefully underutilized. Rathke shows how to cut through government indifference and bureaucratic obstacles to provide those in need with access to these vital resources. But community organizations cant do it alone. Rathke describes ACORN partnerships with HSBC Bank and H&R Block that helped these businesses see building citizen wealth as a new market opportunitya win for them and for the people they once exploited. And he looks at other examples of strange bedfellows in the fight for citizen wealth, including Citibank, once the target of massive protests by ACORN and now, working with it, a major investor in working-class communities. We need to create a national economic and political consensus that increasing family income, wealth, and assets is not welfare or an entitlement giveaway program but an investment in the public good and well-being, Rathke writes. Based on forty years of hard-won experience, Wade Rathke offers a new blueprint for helping millions to achieve the American Dream. Wade Rathke is the founder of ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now)a nationwide activist network engaged in community organizing and currently chief organizer of ACORN International. He is also a founding board member of the Tides Foundation, chief organizer of SEIU Local 100 in New Orleans, and chair of the Organizers Forum.

How to Build Coalitions That Winand Last

Written by a dynamic young legislator who has a record of bridging ideological and partisan divisions Outlines a new approachand a new mindsetthat will enable progressives to consistently win Livened with irreverent humor, enthralling campaign stories, and solid, practical advice
Too many progressives are still using old-school divide-and-conquer tactics: demonize the other side, frighten the voters, scheme, and maneuver to try to win on your own terms. This approach hasnt been particularly successful and has led to widespread alienation and apathy, which plays into the hands of the status quo. And its a betrayal of some of the most cherished ideals of the progressive movement: inclusion, reason, justice, and hope. This is starting to change, but old habits die hard. Nobody is better positioned to help than Kyrsten Sinema. Arizonas youngest state legislator, Sinema was a leader in the successful fight against banning gay marriage in 2006 and in the effort to divest state funds in Darfurunexpected victories in a traditionally conservative state. In Unite and Conquer, Sinema shares how we can put together broad-based coalitions that advance the progressive agenda rather than simply make us feel good about the purity of our ideals. Sinema argues that we must let go of our preconceived notions about who our opponents are, how they think, what specific outcomes were aiming for, even our notions of who we areidentity politics have bred insularity and intolerance and closed us off from creating winning alliances and strategies. Using her experiences and examples from a host of campaigns from all over the country, she offers specific advice on how to forge connectionspersonal and politicalwith seemingly unlikely allies and define our values, interests, and objectives in ways that broaden our range of potential partners and expand our tactical options. We have to learn to think and, not but, she says. Sinema shows readers how to move past politics as war and create support for progressive causes by discovering and emphasizing our common humanity. Unite and Conquer goes to the very heart of what progressive politics needsa good dose of learning how to work with others, sprinkled with humor and grace, by a truly remarkable woman. Celinda Lake, President, Lake Research Partners Kyrsten Sinema is the House Democratic Caucus Assistant Leader in the Arizona state legislature. Her work there has earned numerous awards, including the 2008 Arizona Technology Council Legislator Award, 2007 Planned Parenthood Advocates Choice Award, and 2008 21st Century Democrats Award. She is also an adjunct professor in the School of Social Work at Arizona State University and teaches for the Center for Progressive Leadership.

The Death of Why?

The Decline of Questioning and the Future of Democracy

Argues passionately for the critical importance of inquiry to a healthy democracy Shows how the very institutions that should be encouraging inquiryschools, the media, government, the Internetare actually discouraging it Highlights hopeful examples of people working to restore inquiry to its rightful place of importance
The spirit of inquiry is the engine of democracy. The democratic process is nothing less than citizens regularly asking what kind of society they want to live in and whom they want to lead them. But more and more people are avoiding the whole messy business of questioning. Americans are instead being trained to look for ready-made answers, with potentially dire implications for the health of our society. In this impassioned new book, Andrea Batista Schlesinger argues that were besieged by cultural forces that urge us to avoid independent thought and critical analysis. The media reduces politics to a spectator sport, focusing on polls and personalities rather than issues and ideas. Schools teach to standardized testsstudents learn to fill in the bubbles, not open their minds. Financial literacy courses have replaced civics classes, graduating smart shoppers rather than informed citizens. Even the Internet promotes habits that discourage inquiry. Regurgitating search-engine results becomes a substitute for genuine research and reflection. Social networks promote connection rather than engagement. With all the information available online, over a third of those younger than twenty-five say they get no news on a typical day, up from 25 percent in 1998. The situation isnt hopeless. Batista Schlesinger spotlights individuals and institutions across the country that are working to renew a healthy sense of curiosity and skepticism, particularly in Americans youth. It is, at this point, an uphill battle but one well worth undertaking. The Death of Why? offers both a penetrating sociocultural critique of our current path and a way forward for cultivating inquiry and reinvigorating our democracy. From her start in politics as a teenager to her work at the helm of a national think tank, Andrea Batista Schlesinger asks the important questions. The Death of Why? is perhaps her most important: are we teaching young people to value inquiry, and if not, what hope can we have for the future of democracy? Katrina vanden Heuvel, publisher, The Nation Andrea Batista Schlesinger is executive director of the Drum Major Institute for Public Policy, a nonpartisan, nonprofit think tank generating the ideas that fuel the progressive movement. She has written for numerous publications, including the Nation, New York Newsday, the Chicago Sun-Times, and the Huffington Post; has been profiled by the New York Times and the New Yorker; and has appeared on radio and television ranging from NPR to Lou Dobbs.

How to Win Hearts, Change Minds, and Restore Americas Original Vision Introduction by Jim Hightower Millions of working Americans talk, act, and vote as if their economic interests match those of the megawealthy, the multinational corporations, and the politicians who do their bidding. How did this happen? According to Thom Hartmann, its because the apologists of the Right have become masters of the subtle and largely subconscious aspects of political communication. There is no reason why progressives cant learn them too. Drawing on his background as a psychotherapist and advertising executive as well as a national radio host, Hartmann breaks down the art, science, and technology of effective communication so you can apply it to your own efforts to counter right-wing disinformation. $15.95, MP3 download, 6 1/2 hours ISBN 978-1-57675-888-5 Read by the author Introduction read by Jim Hightower

John Izzo goes viral

People who are looking for information are looking on the Web. Theyre readers, and we want to connect with them. One of the most successful Internet experiments has been Director of Digital Communities David Marshalls Flash animation piece to promote John Izzos bestseller The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die. David assembled a team that included his brother Wayne (a Flash expert), John Izzo, and Johns wife, Leslie. They put together a series of beautiful images superimposed with passages from the book, accompanied by a classically inspired piano score from Pat Coverton, a musician friend of the Izzos. The Flash piece did moderately well at first, averaging a thousand or two views per day. But in September, members of StumbleUpon, a website where people watch and rate websites and videos, stumbled upon it and in general rated it pretty highly. Overnight it jumped into the tens of thousands of views per day. The holy grail: The Five Secrets Flash piece had gone viral. In November, David launched a shorter version of the Flash piece (three minutes versus six minutes for the original) to see if that might increase viewership. As of

Were also offering a digital version of the ASTD Handbook (see page 28) and, as detailed on page 30, the chapters in the ASTD Handbook will be available as digital whitepapers in our new Fast Fundamentals series. One further avenue of collaboration: ASTD has graciously offered to host the Berrett-Koehler Authors Cooperatives 2009 Authors Marketing Workshop on June 17-19 in its offices in Washington DC. Which brings us to another significant partnership. each other, connect ideas to action, share dreams and practical dilemmas, and learn with and from each other. Each year the Co-op sponsors two events: the BK Authors Marketing Workshop, which was held in July 2008 in San Francisco, and the BK Authors Retreat, which took place in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in September 2008. Now, in collaboration with BK staff, the Cooperative is pleased to announce the launch of Mentoring Moments, a service that connects established BK authors to other new or experienced authors who would like help or guidance. The Cooperative has compiled a menu of mentoring topics designed to help authors no matter where they are in the publishing process. Mentorship topics are as diverse as writing with a partner, working with a copyeditor, hiring a publicist, building a website, selling books at speaking engagements, and creating new business opportunities.

Translations
One of our strongest core competencies is selling foreign language translation rights. Going forward, well be helping ASTD secure translations for its more than 200 titles at international book fairs in London, Frankfurt, Beijing, and elsewhere, making ASTDs accumulated knowledge more widely available to the non-English-reading world.

Awards and honors

Berrett-Koehler shows spirit at work
Our books often win awards, but in 2008 we also won an award as a company: the 2008 International Spirit at Work Award. Bestowed by the International Center for Spirit at Work (www.spiritatwork.org) it honors exemplary organizations that are deeply committed to nurturing the human spirit. Kudos upon kudos must go to former Editorial Intern Janice Rutledge, who interviewed BKs staff extensively to fill out the twelve-page award qualification questionnaire, which was mostly essay questions. Senior Human Resources Manager Ginger Winters accepted the award, and gave a gracious acceptance speech, at the Catalyzing Conscious Capitalism event in Austin, Texas. Our authors get recognized

Utne Reader named Rinku Sen, author of our book The Accidental American: Immigration and Citizenship in the Age of Globalization, one of its 50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World. In Utnes words: Racial-justice activists, listen up. Rinku Sen is recharging a deadlocked debate. In The Accidental American (BerrettKoehler, 2008), Sen takes on immigration policy through the story of Fekkak Mamdouh, who has been organizing immigrant restaurant workers in New York City amid post-9/11 racism. Every year, Leadership Excellence magazine lists its rankings of the worlds top 100 management thinkers. This year no less than fourteen Berrett-Koehler authors made the list: Chip Bell, Ken Blanchard, Peter Block, Kevin Cashman, Ira Chaleff, Joseph Jaworski, Beverly Kaye, Rob Lebow, Richard Leider, Eileen McDargh, Ian Mitroff, Gifford Pinchot, Edgar Schein, and Meg Wheatley. The Leadership and Self-Deception phenomenon continues

As of November 2008, the Arbinger Institutes Leadership and SelfDeception had spent six months in a rowtwelve out of the preceding fifteen monthson the BusinessWeek Bestseller List. It was at #7 in November. For a book that was published eight years ago, this is truly extraordinary. These sales are generated mostly by word of mouth. This is a book that changes lives, and people feel moved to share it with their friends, colleagues, and families. Overall, it has sold more than 650,000 copies.
