Some of our interesting patients David Marszalek receives liver transplant from daughter
The Marszalek family, David, Nanette, Ashley, and Cody, have been patients at College Drive Dental for many years. They were at the ofce for dental appointments recently and shared the amazing miracle that took place in their lives. Dave received a living-donor liver transplant on August 26, 2010. The donor was daughter Ashley! In September 2009, Dave was diagnosed with cancer of the bile ducts and primary sclerosing cholangitis, the same liver disease that Walter Payton suffered from. The cure for Dave was the donation of 65 percent of his daughters liver. At the time of the surgery, Ashley was 22 years old and a student at Florida Gulf Coast University. Although several people were willing to be tested as a donor, Ashley was a perfect match for her father and was happy to undergo the risky surgery. In living donor surgery, a portion of a healthy persons Ashley & David liver is transplanted into a person with a diseased liver. The organ regenerates itself in both the donor and the recipient. In Ashleys case, her liver has regenerated 100 percent, and she is back to normal activities. Since the surgery, she has gone camping in the Everglades with a 75-pound backpack and has ridden her bike across the state of Florida with a group from school. She graduated on May 1 with a degree in environmental sciences and studies. Dave and Nanette were at the graduation ceremony in Florida. Dave is healthy and has been doing some traveling. He plans to enjoy the summer before going back to work in September. He is looking forward to going boating, which he wasnt able to do last year. Dave says, I wouldnt be here if it werent for The Marszalek family Ashley. He is thankful for his life, and thankful for his daughters precious gift.

Our resident chef, Dina, has supplied this recipe for our readers to try. On Mothers Day, she made a very special meal for several families to enjoy. Dina made lasagna, salad, and garlic bread for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Oak Lawn. This is the second Mothers Day that she dedicated her time and talent to serving the parents of ill children at Hope Childrens Hospital. What a generous and seless way to spend Mothers Day!
