Installing Data Services 4.0 on a Windows 7 laptop - https://community.wdf.sap.

corp/sbs/docs/DOC55169 Warning: this procedure is not officially supported and is intended for internal use only. Background: The Data Services 4.0 server components can only be installed on Windows 2003/2008 servers, not on Windows 7 or other client OS. The client OS can only be used to install the Data Services client tools, mainly Designer. The main reason for this behavior is that Data Services 4.0 now depends on the BI 4.0 platform (or the mini-version, Information Platform Services or IPS) and this is not supported on client OS as well. So without support for our underlying platform, it does not make sense to support DS 4.0 servers on these platforms. Also our customers are not really asking to run DS servers on their Windows 7 boxes, our customers all have 2003/2008 servers available to run the DS server components. But for SAP consultants, especially if you are on the road a lot, it has become more painful now to use Data Services since you need to rely on hosted environments or VMWare images running Windows 2003/2008. The official support statement is not changing: Data Services 4.0 server components are only supported on Windows 2003/2008. This is officially stated in the PAM that can be accessed through http://service.sap.com/PAM -> search for Data Services 4.0 -> find the supported platforms PDF files in the lower part of the screen. But in order to help consultants who want to install full Data Services on their local Windows 7 laptop, we have verified and successfully installed Data Services 4.0 on a Windows 7 laptop. First, you will need to install the Information Platform Services (IPS) or even the full BI 4.0 platform. You will see a warning in the pre-requisite check about an unsupported platform, but you can continue and will be able to install the BI platform/IPS. Next you can install Data Services 4.0. However, here the pre-requisite check is a little more restrictive and will prevent you from installing on Windows 7. So in order to force the installer to install the server components on an unsupported OS you need to run setup.exe with the option SERVERINSTALL=YES. The exact command line is: setup.exe SERVERINSTALL=YES Unfortunately there is currently a bug in this SERVERINSTALL option and when you use it, it will NOT install all server components, only a subset, which means your local DS install will not work. This is a bug and will be fixed in Data Services 4.0 SP1 (June/July 2011). In order to install DS 4.0 today, you need to make an additional change to one the installation XML files. These steps will no longer be required in Data Services 4.0 SP1, so are only a temporary workaround: after unzipping the Data Services 4.0 download file, go to <cddir>\ dunit\product.dataservices64-4.0core-32 folder, rename the old product.seed.xml and replace with this one.

After that you can run setup.exe SERVERINSTALL=YES to install the Data Services server components. Ill say it one more time: we cant officially support this environment. But first reports from internal users using the approach described here are very positive. It looks like even Information Steward can be installed on top and is running smooth you need enough memory though to run this all!
