How much time and money can you invest in an MA?

The University of Sunderland offers a highly flexible MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in full-time, part-time and independent distance learning modes. If you are able to take one year away from your normal commitments and wish to enjoy the many benefits of living and studying in an English-speaking, academic environment, the full-time, on-campus route is the ideal option for you. If, on the other hand, it is difficult for you to leave your existing employment for financial or other reasons, the distance learning and part-time routes can help solve these problems.

Programme content
There are three stages to achieving the full Masters level programme:

Stage 1 - Postgraduate Certificate

There are three required modules: The Principles and Practice of English Language Teaching Linguistics for TESOL L2 Practical Teaching

Is an MA in TESOL right for you?

The MA TESOL has been designed to develop your teaching skills through a knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of the English language classroom. The programme is ideal for teachers at any level of education: primary, secondary or university / college. It is also suitable for teachers in both private and state sectors. You will be able to use the qualification to enhance your professional development and it may also help towards promotion and associated salary increases. Furthermore, the programme could equip you to take up a role in managing change in education or leading a department / school.

Stage 2 - Postgraduate Diploma

During the diploma phase, you will be offered one core module and four option modules from which you may choose two: Research Methods in Language Learning and Teaching (core module) Theories of Second/Foreign Language Learning Language, Culture and Power (not available for the on-campus mode) Language Learning and Educational Technology (not available for the independent distance learning mode) Management of Language Change (not available for the distance learning mode) Modules may vary from year to year. Everyone who successfully completes the certificate and diploma phases will be invited to move on to the Masters phase of the programme.

Is the MA TESOL for experienced teachers only?

The MA TESOL includes a practical teaching module in both on-campus and distance learning modes. This module is designed to cater for applicants with no prior teaching experience as well as offering experienced ESL teachers the opportunity to further develop their practical skills in the English language classroom. Distance learners are required to find an institution where they can teach and vide-record one session in the classroom. On-campus students take part in peer-teaching.

testimonials
I took the MA TESOL programme from August 2004 to January 2006 at the University of Sunderland and got my Masters Degree with Distinction. After I came back to Changchun, China, I carried on teaching English at Changchun Taxation College and also began my career as a teacher trainer at Tsinghua Foreign Language School for Children. My learning experience in Sunderland has been of great benefit in both areas of my work. Ive just applied the methodologies and theories from TESOL to my teaching and training practice and you know what? It really works!

The year I spent studying the MA TESOL at the University of Sunderland was an excellent experience for me. All the modules the programme provided were of great use for my future career as a university teacher and the tutors were all friendly and always ready to help. I felt valued and appreciated in the communication with my tutors. I was the student representative and attended the study boards of the department to have a say in the programme (I had never done this before in China!), which made me very proud of myself. I will cherish my memory of studying at the University of Sunderland for the rest of my life. Yingjun Zhang, China, 2006-2007.

My names Mojtaba Aghamohammadi. I come from Iran. Im currently a Diploma student. During my Certificate and Diploma phases, I enjoyed the tutorials and classes. The classes are both fun and academically challenging. They incorporate theory and practice. Im sure they will be very useful for my future career. The MA TESOL tutors are most helpful and encouraging. Ive found a lot of good friends from different cultural backgrounds. Being in an Englishspeaking environment has also helped me considerably with my oral communicative abilities. Im confident those who decide to continue their higher education through the MA TESOL programme at the University of Sunderland will find a pleasant and productive academic environment.

Sunderland was the University of choice for my MA TESOL because it offered a specialist course that was pertinent to a career as an EFL lecturer at university in the UAE. I found that I was able to draw on my background knowledge and the EFL interests throughout the course and also in the dissertation.

Entry Requirements
This MA TESOL is for people with a first degree or equivalent and excellent English language skills.

The staff at the faculty at Sunderland were knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. It was also an invaluable learning experience studying with English teachers of Chinese, Korean and Moroccan origin. I am still in touch with many of them.
