SVETLANA POCIUMBAN, director adjunct MNAM Teologie n culori i art teologic, icoana are propria ei gramatic, propriile chei de lectur, care trebuie asimilate n mod treptat. Faptul c tradiia a reinut i a canonizat anumite forme ale icoanei tipuri iconografice se explic prin necesitatea adecvrii ntre form i coninutul ei, prin corespondena desvrit i esenial ce trebuie s existe ntre icoan i privitor. Dobndind putere de lege, aceste forme, ridicate la rangul de canoane, l obligau pe zugravul de icoane la respectarea lor cu strictee, riscnd uneori s devin un simplu copiator. Zugravul avea ns obligaia s se lase ptruns de subiect, astfel nct chipul transpus pe lemn s devin rodul unei adnci reflecii spirituale. Canonul reprezentrilor iconografice s-a consolidat n secolul al IX-lea: imaginea n icoan trebuie s fie pe nelesul tuturor, formele s fie asemntoare celor din via, redate cu ajutorul culorilor corespunztoare, susineau ideologii cretinismului Grigorie de Nyssa i Ioan Damaschinul. n Biserica Ortodox s-a respectat ntotdeauna canonul impus de erminia picturii bizantine, care a reliefat rolurile icoanei ortodoxe : pedagogic, didactic, cultic, haric - de mijlocire a darurilor dumnezeieti i estetic. ...n ce const mreia omului? se ntreba Grigore de Nyssa. Nu n asemnarea lui cu lumea creat, ci n faptul c este fcut dup chipul naturii care l-a creat, dup chipul i asemnarea lui Dumnezeu. Dac chipul este o nsuire natural, asemnarea este rodul libertii i al efortului voinei. Aadar, asemnarea este orientarea i micarea de baz a chipului spre perfeciunea lui Dumnezeu. Asemnarea se realizeaz progresiv prin intermediul stpnirii i sublimrii simurilor, cunoaterii lui Dumnezeu, ascezei cretine i rugciunii. i subiectul, i stilul imaginii trebuiau s poarte un caracter simbolic. Astfel, iconografia poate fi numit alfabetul artei religioase. Primele ateliere de zugrvire a icoanelor au aprut n biserici i mnstiri sub tutela slujitorilor cultului. Mai trziu, odat cu creterea cererii de icoane, au aprut i ateliere mici n localitile rurale. ntr-un rstimp relativ scurt, icoanele mpodobeau i bogatele interioare ale palatelor, locuinele marii i micii nobilimi, dar i modestele case ale rnimii. i are n Arta bizantin a stat la originea icoanei moldoveneati. De aici au fost preluate n plin Ev Mediu reperele eseniale ale unor valori care, pe parcursul a cinci secole de existen, au cunoscut toate vicisitudinile istoriei. Au rezistat ns i s-au integrat n mod fundamental n specificul culturii noastre originare. Interesul fa de fenomenul icoanei moldoveneti este n permanent ascensiune, fapt ce se datoreaz unor intense cercetri n acest domeniu, dar i perfecionrii metodelor i mijloacelor de restaurare a operelor de art religioas. Pentru publicul larg pictura religioas este n ultimul timp o atracie, ca unul dintre domeniile cele mai interesante i

fascinante, dar, n acelai timp, puin cunoscute ale istoriei artei medievale. Colecia de art religioas a Muzeul Naional de Art al Moldovei s-a constituit ca rezultat al numeroaselor expediii pentru studierea patrimoniului obiectelor de cult, ncepnd cu anii 60 ai secolului trecut. Astzi muzeul este deintorul a circa 1000 de opere de art religioas de o inestimabil valoare artistic, majoritatea dintre acestea reprezentnd icoane, diverse obiecte de rit bisericesc i cri vechi. Albumul Icoane basarabene din colecia Muzeului Naional de Art al Moldovei include 100 opere care ofer o viziune ampl asupra dezvoltrii artei iconografice n Moldova. Una dintre cele mai impuntoare i fascinante icoane din colecia muzeului este Maica Domnului Hodighitria, datat cu secolul al XVI-lea, care provine din biserica Sf. Ilie din Chiinu, lca de cult distrus n anul 1960. Geneza tipului iconografic al Hodighitriei (n traducere din greac Maica Domnului ndrumtoarea) are o istorie ndelungat, ncepnd cu secolul al IV-lea, termenul de Hodighitria provenind de la denumirea Mnstirii Hodegon din Constantinopol, unde se pstra, n primii ani ai crizei iconoclaste, o icoan fctoare de minuni de acest tip. Icoana de origine greac Profetul Moise provine din biserica satului Sntuca i a fost realizat la hotarul secolelor XVII-XVIII. n susinerea versiunii despre proveniena greceasc a icoanei vine textul ortografiat n limba greac de pe sulul din mna prorocului. Varianta romn sun astfel : Rug, eu te-am chemat, cci tain de neptruns n rug am aflat. Secolul XVIII a semnificat o adevrat explozie n iconografia romneasc. Evoluia i amplitudinea fenomenului artistic romnesc, creterea numeric a lcaelor de cult, dar i a zugravilor de icoane a impulsionat realizarea operelor de arta iconografic. Numrul operelor de art religioas datate cu secolul al XVIII-lea n colecia muzeului este impuntor. Multe dintre icoanele acestei perioade provin din vechile biserici din lemn basarabene ce au funcionat n localitile rurale. Icoanele Sfntul Ierarh Nicolae, Arhanghelul Mihail i Arhanghelul Mihail clcnd diavolul n picioare provin din biserica Sfinii Voievozi din satul Camenca, Bli i sunt lucrate de acelai zugrav. ncepnd cu cea de-a doua jumtate a secolului al XVIII-lea, arta laic occidental avea s influeneze n mod radical pictura de icoane. Chiar dac practica respectrii i aprecierii icoanelor s-a pstrat, pictura icoanelor resimea influene majore ale artei laice. n secolul al XIX-lea, maetrii care decorau noile biserici i catedrale, foloseau tehnici moderne de pictur. Tradiia meteugului, pstrat din tat-n fiu i dus mai departe de iconarii din vechime, pe la nceputul secolului XIX fusese pierdut aproape n ntregime.

Icoana basarabean din secolul al XIX-lea dezvolt tradiiile anterioare, propunnd ns o nou modalitate de tratare a canoanelor prestabilite. Intervin schimbri tradiionale n utilizarea procedeelor plastice de expresie. Icoana se ndeprteaz de canonicitate i, n acelai timp, n pictura icoanei apar elemente de clarobscur, forma i volumul sunt tratate prin intermediul luminii i umbrei, care ndeprteaz i mai mult icoana de originile sale. Aceasta se apropie tot mai mult de arta laic. n comparaie cu secolele precedente, n secolul al XIX-lea se constat o evident cretere a rolului i importanei zugravului. Multe dintre icoane poart semntura autorului i anul realizrii. Printre operele de la hotarul secolelor XVIII-XIX se evideniaz cele ale zugravului Gherasim i ale sculptorului tefan un duet eminent de maetri iscusii. Ei s-au remarcat prin dou opere impuntoare: iconostasele bisericilor din satele Coglniceni i Ghermneti. Icoana Naterea Maicii Domnului este cea mai impresionant icoan din iconostasul bisericii din Coglniceni. Din punct de vedere stilistic, aceast icoan poate fi considerat drept una dintre primele ncercri de aplicare a principiilor picturii de gen n arta basarabean. Nici arta, nici teologia luate n mod separat nu ar fi putut crea o icoan - se impune unitatea acestora. Elementul laic ptrunde tot mai mult n icoanele din a doua jumtate a secolului al XIX-lea, chiar dac iconografia nu suport schimbri eseniale. Aceast tendin se observ i n icoanele pictate de clugrul Iezechil ntre anii 1840-1841, pentru catapeteasma bisericii Sfntul Nicolae a Mnstirii Cpriana: Profeii Aaron i Moise, Prorocii David i Iezechil. Icoanele secolului al XIX-lea din colecia muzeului reprezint un model tradiional al tendinei unui zugrav autodidact de a mbina pictura profesionist cu tradiiile icoanei populare. n secolele XVI-XIX icoana popular reprezint un fenomen aparte al artei religioase din Moldova, unul puternic influenat de ambiana rustic, care a generat crearea adevratelor opere de art. De aici rzbate i expresivitatea neobinuit care se datoreaz calitilor naive i stngace ale tratrii imaginilor i coloritului. Prin fora sa de sugestie, imaginea influeneaz puternic contiina omului, afectndu-l n mod incontient. Ea poate s-i stpneasc gndirea, s-i aprind pasiunile, s-i modeleze comportamentul. Icoanele populare reprezint o caracteristic a mentalitii rneti i, totodat, reflect tradiiile cultului cretin. Icoana popular propune o concepie proprie a spaiului pictat,

reprezentnd o viziune strict frontal a chipurilor. Unele dintre cele mai timpurii icoane de factur popular sunt icoanele-perechi atestate n satul Boroseni, Edine Iisus Pantocratorul i Maica Domnului Hodighitria, realizate la cumpna secolelor XVII-XVIII. Icoanele se impun prin caracterul naiv al desenului ce evideniaz proporiile alungite ale figurilor i subliniaz decorativismul culorilor sonore. n dialogul inaugurat ntre zugravul acestora i privitor icoanele sunt percepute drept un spaiu privilegiat de ntlnire, un fragment al conceperii i exprimrii legitilor universului. n albumul Icoane basarabene din colecia Muzeului Naional de Art al Moldovei se regsesc o serie de icoane, datate aproximativ cu mijlocul sau sfritul secolului al XIX-lea, cu un colorit deosebit i particulariti stilistice, care ne fac s afirmm c unele dintre ele au fost create n conformitate cu tradiia iconografic rus: Maica Domnului, Bucuria Tuturor ndurerailor, Adormirea Maicii Domnului, nvierea Domnului, ncadrat de dousprezece scene ale srbtorilor .a. Fenomenul icoanei ruse se explic printr-o profunzime de idei, simbolism, lirism i frumusee autentice, toate ascunse n spatele unui primitivism iluzoriu. Icoana rus are la baz o naraiune deosebit, unde se mbin expresivitatea artistic, claritatea formelor i dezvluirea n timp a subiectelor. Pentru arta Rusiei icoana era forma clasic de exprimare, precum a fost mozaicul pentru Bizan, sculptura pentru Grecia i relieful pentru Egipt, fiind un martor al trecutului i dnd culoare oricrei colecii de muzeu. Spre deosebire de numeroasele imagini ale lumii moderne care ne fascineaz i ne obsedeaz totodat, icoana este asemenea unei oaze, ca un spaiu propice mblnzirii inimii i domolirii patimilor, oaz de linite pentru ochii obosii de o lume a ispitelor vizuale de tot felul, care ne influeneaz deseori mpotriva voinei. Adevrata icoan ne scruteaz cu un alt fel de privire: ptrunztoare, vivifiant, venit dintr-o cu totul alt lume; ea este, astfel, o invitaie la dialog. Apariia respectivului album cu prezentarea operelor de cert valoare artistic a fost posibil graie participrii Muzeului Naional de Art al Moldovei n calitate de aplicant la proiectul transfrontalier O abordare transfrontalier a managementului i valorificrii patrimoniului cultural. Valoarea total a proiectului a constituit 170 700 Euro, acesta fiind finanat de ctre Ununea European prin Instrumentul European de Vecintate i Parteneriat cu suma de 149 000 Euro i cofinanat de rile participante.

The fact that the tradition preserved and canonized certain forms of the icon iconographic types - is explained by the necessity to adapt the form and the content through the perfect and essential relationship that should exist between the icon and the viewer. The forms that acquired the status of a law and afterwards became canons, forced the painter to strictly respect them. Thus the painter sometimes risked to become a simple copier but he had the duty to let himself to be imbued with the subject in such a way that the image depicted on the wood panel to become the result of a deep spiritual reflection. The canon of the iconographic representations was settled in the 9th century: the image in the icon should be understood by everybody, the forms should resemble the real ones and be reproduced by means of appropriate colors, stated the doctrinaires of the Christianity Gregory of Nyssa and John of Damascus. In the Orthodox Church there was always preserved the canon imposed by the hermeneia of the byzantine painting that revealed the roles of the orthodox icon: pedagogical, didactical and aesthetical. It was also a cult object and the mediator between man and Gods offerings. In what the majesty of a man resides? Gregory of Nyssa asked himself. Not in his resemblance with the created world but in the fact that it is created in accordance with the nature that had created him, in accordance with the image and semblance to God. If the image is a natural feature, the resemblance is the result of the freedom and wills effort. Thus, the resemblance is the direction and the main movement of the image towards Gods perfection. The resemblance is progressively achieved through the suppression and sublimation of the feelings, cognition of God, Christian ascetics and prayers. Both the subject and the style of the image should have had a symbolic feature. Thus, the iconography may be called the alphabet of the religious art. The first iconography ateliers appeared in churches and monasteries under the patronage of the cult servants. Later, when the demand for icons increased, there appeared small ateliers in rural areas. In a relatively short period of time the icons embellished the rich interiors of the palaces, the houses of the nobility as well as the modest homes of the peasants. The Moldovan icon takes its origins in the Byzantine art. In the Middle Ages it borrowed the essential marks of some values that passed through all the trials of the last five centuries of human history. However, they have resisted and have been integrated fundamentally in the national culture. The interest towards the phenomenon of the Moldovan

icon is permanently increasing due to intensive researches in the field as well as to the improvement of the methods and ways of restoration of religious art works. For the large public the religious painting became lately an attraction as it represents one of the most interesting and fascinating fields, but at the same time, the less known one from the history of the medieval art. The collection of religious art of National Art Museum of Moldova was formed after numerous expeditions for the study of the cult objects heritage beginning with the 1960ies. At present the museum owns about 1000 religious art objects of priceless artistic value. The major part is icons, different church rite objects and old books. The catalogue Bessarabian icons from the collection of National Art Museum of Moldova includes 100 works that offer an ample vision over the evolution of the iconographic art in Moldova. One of the most impressive and fascinating icons in the museums collection is Our Lady Hodegetria, dated with 16th century, located in the Saint Elijah church from Chisinau which was destroyed in 1960. The genesis of Hodegetria iconographic type (from Greek Our Lady of the Way) has a long history beginning in the th 4 century. The term Hodegetria comes from the Monastery of the Panaghia Hodegetria in Constantinople where during the first years of the iconoclasm there was a miracle maker icon of this type. Prophet Moses is an icon of Greek origin that comes from the church of Sanatauca village, made at the end of the 17th-beginning of the 18th centuries. The version of its Greek provenience is confirmed by the text in Greek from the scroll in prophets hand. In English it sounds like this: I called you burning bush, as I found an inscrutable mystery in the burning bush. The 18th century meant a real Romanian artistic explosion. The evolution and the amplitude of the Romanian artistic phenomenon, the increase of the number of cult places and icon painters gave an impulse to the creation of the iconographic art works. There are much more religious art works made in the 18th century in museums collection. Many of these icons of that period come from the old wood churches that existed in the countryside. The icons Saint Hierarch Nicholas, Michael the Archangel and Michael the Archangel Trampling down the Devil are from the Sfintii Voievozi church from Camenca village, Balti town and belong to the same author. In the second half of the 18th century the western lay art radically influenced the icon painting.

The icons were respected and appreciated as before, but, nevertheless, there was a major influence of the lay art. In the 19th century the masters who decorated the new churches and cathedrals used modern painting techniques. The oral tradition, preserved and conveyed by the ancient iconographers, was almost lost. The Bessarabian icon of the 19th century is expanding the previous traditions suggesting a new method of approaching the preset canons. There are introduced changes in the utilization of the plastic means expression. The icon is less canonic but at the same time in its painting there appear elements of chiaroscuro, the form and the volume are expressed by means of light and shadow and that estranges the icon from its origins. It comes closer to lay art. In comparison with the past centuries in the 19th century there is an obvious increase of the role and importance of the painter. Many of the icons bear the signature of the author and the year of creation. Among the works from the end of the 18th-beginning of the 19th century there may be remarked the ones of painter Gherasim and sculptor Stefan an excellent duo of skilful masters. They became famous for two important art works: the iconostases of the churches from Cogalniceni and Ghermanesti villages. The icon Birth of Our Lady is the most spectacular icon from the iconostasis of Cogalniceni church. From the stylistic point of view this icon may be considered one of the first attempts to apply the principles of the genre painting in the Bessarabian art. Nor art, neither theology, taken separately, could not create an icon. Their unity was necessary. The secular element penetrates more and more into the icons painting in the second half of the 19th century even if the iconography does not pass through essential changes. This trend is also remarked in the icons painted by monk Iezechiel in 1840-1841 for the reredos of the Saint Nicholas church of Capriana Monastery: Prophets Aaron and Moses, Prophets David and Ezekiel. The icons made in the 19th century from the museum collection represent a traditional model of a self-taught painter to combine the professional painting with the popular icon traditions. A special phenomenon in the religious art of Moldova in the 16th-19th centuries represents the popular icon. This phenomenon was strongly influenced by the rustic environment that generated the creation of real art works. From here comes the unusual expressiveness due to nave and clumsy features of the image and coloring. Through its power of suggestion the image strongly influences mans conscience and he does not even realize it. The image may dominate the thinking, ignite the passions and shape the behaviour.

The popular icons represent a trait of the peasants mentality and, at the same time, they reflect the traditions of the Christian cult. The popular icon suggests its own concept of the painted area with its strictly frontal vision of the images. Ones of the earliest folk icons are the pair icons from Boroseni village, Edinet county Jesus Pantocrator and Our Lady Hodegetria, made at the end of the 17th-beginning of the 18th century. The icons are remarkable through the naivety of the drawing that highlights the elongated proportions of the figures and underlines the decorativism of bright colors. Within the dialogue held between the iconographer and the viewer, the icons are perceived as a privileged space for meeting, a fragment of conception and expression of the rules of the Universe. In the catalogue Bessarabian icons from the collection of National Art Museum of Moldova there is a series of icons dated back with the middle or end of the 19th century with a special coloring and stylistic peculiarities that make us affirm that some of them were made in the ateliers of Russian iconographers from Bessarabia: Our Lady, Joy of All Who Sorrow, Dormition of Our Lady, Resurrection of Jesus Christ Surrounded by Twelve Scenes of the Feasts and others. The phenomenon of the Russian icon is explained by the profundity of the concepts, symbolism, lyrics and genuine beauty, all hidden behind an illusory primitivism. Its core is the special narration where the artistic expressiveness is combined with the clarity of the forms and the successive disclosure of the subjects. For the art of Russia the icon was the classic form of expression as the mosaic was for Byzantium, sculpture for Greece and relieve for Egypt. A witness of the past, the icon is a treasure for any museum collection. In comparison with the numerous images of the modern world that capture and obsess us, the icon is like an oasis, like a space propitious for calming the heart and to soothe the ordeals, an oasis of quietness for the eyes tired by all kind of illustrations that often influence us despite our will. The true icon looks at us otherwise: ingoing, inspiringly, as if from another world. It is thus an invitation to a dialogue. The publication of the catalogue with art works with certain artistic value from the collection of National Art Museum of Moldova was possible due to the participation of NAMM as applicant in the trans-border project A TRANS-BORDER APPROACH TO CULTURAL HERITAGE MANAGEMENT AND VALORISATION. The project was financed by the European Union through the instrument of neighbor and partnership with the sum of 149 000 Euro from the total amount of 170 700 Euro and co-financed by the partners participating in the project.

Uniunea European este constituit din 27 state membre care au decis s-i uneasc treptat cunotinele, resursele i destinele.
