A BEAT POET — a “beatnik” and back alley poet named


Sazerac — scrawled his wig blips and fraughty issues across the sidewalks of New York. A
young wanderer named Je a n - L o u i s Kerouac cadged conversations and encounters on the
road across America and laid them down in a book. The Beat Generation moved us off center,
and they moved us more than we can measure. A s t r e a m o f m o o d y c o n s c i o u s n e s s
flowed from the art studios, jazz clubs, and frolic pads of postwar New York and
permeated middle-thinking America. The Beats expressed themselves in a language as twisted
and unique as one’s thumb-print. Mellowness mixed with rebellion to create a righteous social
cocktail. Kerouac used that social cocktail to blow up the novel. Pollock to explode the
canvas. Meanwhile, Charlie Parker was breaking the sound barrier on 52nd Street. re:Verse
is meant to move you back and take you forward again. Call it e x p r e s s i o n i s m o n a p l a t e
a n d i n a g l a s s. “Fire lights and smoking nights; And splashes of dripping paint; jazz
explosions and constant commotion. Leave It to Beaver this ain’t.”
