Goals and Objectives: Improve focus to task, fine motor skills/strength. Increase expressive communication. Improve self-reflection. D. Adaptations: Limiting the size of the clay. Controlling the hardness of the clay. E. Applications for Music: Starting with strong, rapid drumming. Use iso-principle to change music and encourage smoothing clay and building with small pieces. II. Mandalas A. Materials: paper, oil pastels and/or chalk, tape B. Procedure: 1. Each person does their own mandala based on decisions /guidance of group 2. or: Group mandala developed according to group rules C. Goals and Objectives: Improve social interaction. Increase focus to task (especially individual mandala). Improve communication, cooperation, problem-solving skills. D. Adaptations: Cut out circles first. Provide a theme. Use alternate media, e.g. sand, paint , tempera paint (water-based/washable!), etc. E. Applications for Music: Music may lend a theme to the experience or even suggest imagery through lyrics or composition. If the mandala is being rotated, for example, you can have a different song play for each time the mandala is turned. Each song structures the element of time and provides guidance to connect the art with an overall theme. III. Scribble Art: A. Materials: Oil pastels, chalk, regular drawing paper or multi-purpose art paper B. Procedure: Establish scribbler/chaser, scribble, look for images C. Goals and Objectives: To improve social interaction, peer communication, flexibility, cooperation, teamwork. D. Adaptations: Trading paper back and forth or rotating all papers through the group. Control scope of activity with size of paper. E. Applications for Music: Music to cue and structure scribbling and background music while searching for images and filling in pictures. IV. Painting: A. Materials: Water-based paint, non-traditional brushes, sponges, stamps, etc., large roll paper. B. Procedure: Paint as you are moved and inspired by the music. Try to cover the entire paper with paint. C. Goals and Objectives: Increase social interaction, cooperation, flexibility. Improve/increase expression. D. Adaptations: Using non-traditional paint brushes. Rotating the paper if clients are not standing. 1. Extension: Create view-finders. Cut out framed selections and re-create image on another paper. E. Applications for Music: Differences in tempo and style often motivate the clients to paint with different types of strokes or staccato motions.
