Over a thousand people dressed as shipyard workers from a century ago walked and cycled through east Belfast yesterday to converge on Titanic Belfast, the new visitor attraction which opened at the weekend. dressed as shipyard workers from the early 20th century, the 1,000 people followed in the footsteps of the generations of Harland and Wolff yardmen who made their way to the shipyard through east Belfast since the Yard was established in 1861. Homecoming consultation
WORK has started on official homecoming events for Northern Ireland-based soldiers with 19 Light Brigade who have started to return home after six months in Afghanistan. Consultations are ongoing for a number of events at which we are hopeful the community will be able to share with the soldiers both in their pride of achievement and recognition of their losses, a Ministry of Defence spokesman said last night. republic eyes closer UK ties


A FORMER Irish diplomat has said that the Republic of Ireland is moving ever closer to the UK and that there is a growing possibility of it rejoining the British Commonwealth. HOURS after being elected Ulster Unionist leader by a vast margin, Mike Nesbitt yesterday said that he wanted to be adopted by a poor family for a day.

The 15th UUP leader, pictured left, who comes from a wealthy family, said that if he had grown up just a mile from where he did in Belfasts leafy suburbs he may never have risen to where he has. The Strangford MLA said he believed that if he spent 24 hours with a family in a

deprived area it may help him to get a feel for what its like. Mr Nesbitt, who has a double first from Cambridge, became the Provinces only Oxbridge educated political leader in recent memory when he defeated John McCallister at Saturdays contest in Belfasts Ramada
