GEAR UP students honored during fourth annual Governors Honors Symposium CHARLESTON, W.Va. The West Virginia GEAR UP program recognized the academic achievements of nearly 120 students at the fourth annual Governors Honors Symposium held March 31 at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences. West Virginia GEAR UP is a college preparation program that serves students in ten counties in central and southern West Virginia. The Symposium honors the educational pursuits of 12th grade students in the program and focuses on the importance of pursuing education and training beyond high school. In conjunction with the Symposium, Governor Earl Ray Tomblin proclaimed Saturday, March 31 as West Virginia GEAR UP Day. Medallions engraved with a commendation were also presented to each student on behalf of the Governors Office. This event highlights West Virginias commitment to promoting the educational development of our young people. The pursuit of postsecondary education is a crucial step toward building a more prepared workforce and a more robust economy, Tomblin said. Ensuring that our students have the opportunity to earn a two-year or four-year college degree will ultimately help ensure a bright and prosperous future for West Virginia.

He praised the students for their academic success in high school and encouraged them to be persistent in pursuing a college degree. Eugene and Janet Massey of Sylvester received the programs Parent Leadership award. West Virginia GEAR UP aims to create a culture of college-readiness within the communities it serves, Chancellor Hill said. To accomplish that goal, we must enlist the support, energy, and enthusiasm of individuals at the local level who can serve as change agents. The parent and educator awards recognize the invaluable contributions of our local partners who demonstrate exceptional dedication and commitment to assisting all students in obtaining access to postsecondary education. West Virginia GEAR UP is a federally funded grant program designed to help students and their families plan, apply, and pay for education and training after high school. The grant serves ten high-need counties, including, Boone, Clay, Lincoln, McDowell, Mingo, Roane, Summers, Webster, Wirt, and Wyoming. -end-
