Revised March 27 2012

LS23L: INTRODUCTION TO LABORATORY & SCIENTIFIC METHODOLOGY (2 UNITS) SPRING 2012 SYLLABUS WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE? This course is the new Life Sciences Laboratory intended for students who took the prerequisite course LS2 starting in Fall 2011, and who are concurrently enrolled in LS3. Chem 14C is an enforced prerequisite for LS23L and LS3. INTRODUCTION This course is an introductory life sciences laboratory designed for undergraduate students. LS23L offers the opportunity to conduct wet-lab and cutting-edge bioinformatics laboratory experiments. This course has a one-hour online reading assignment/quiz and three hours of laboratory research each week (for a total of 4 hours per week). Undergraduate students will work in groups of three conducting experiments in the areas of physiology, metabolism, cell biology, molecular biology, genotyping and bioinformatics. Co-requisite: LS3. Concurrent enrollment in LS3, Introduction to Molecular Biology. GRADING Three individual written laboratory reports due in lab the following week (Weeks 1, 4 and 7). Seven in-class worksheets due at end of laboratory (Weeks 2, 3, 5, 6 & 10). Also 8 & 9? Ten pre-lab reading quizzes to be completed online (all Labs). Ten in-class quizzes at beginning of laboratory (all Labs). Ten post-lab quizzes to be completed before the end of the quarter (all Labs). Multiple-choice final exam. PRE-LAB READING QUIZZES Pre-lab reading quizzes will be based on the lab manual content and any assigned video content. You should expect to spend about 50 minutes total studying the assigned content and taking the multiple choice quiz on CCLE. Each quiz will open the Friday before a lab week and must be completed by noon on the Monday of lab week. Please see the weekly information grid for more details. All due dates are subject to change. No make-up quizzes will be granted. You alone are responsible for making sure all assignments are completed on time. Each pre-lab quiz is worth 3 points. IN-LAB QUIZZES In-lab quizzes are based on the lab manual content and any assigned video content. They are approximately 5 minutes long and are taken by all students at the beginning of each laboratory section. No extra time will be given for tardiness. Each in-lab quiz is worth 8 points. LAB ASSIGNMENTS Each lab will have an associated assignment worth 30 points: either a lab report or a worksheet. Written lab reports will be due one week following the lab, at the beginning of your next lab section. You will be working in groups of three; however, the written assignments are individual assignments. This means you can share data but NOT copy your partners written lab reports. Worksheets will be due at the end of the lab section, before you leave the room. At the end of the quarter, your lowest lab assignment score will be dropped, with the exception of the assignment for the DNA Isolation & Amplification Lab, which cannot be dropped. POST-LAB QUIZZES Post-lab reading quizzes will be based on the laboratory itself, and should be taken on CCLE after completing the lab. Each post-lab quiz is worth 2 points and will be available after the last lab section of the week on Thursdays. The post-lab quizzes will remain open until finals week. FINAL EXAM The comprehensive final exam is a multiple choice online test taken during finals week and is worth 100 points.
