Lab 4: Cardiovascular System Meghan Hughes 3343-8468 2057

The purpose of this lab is to show how the baroreceptor reflex helps BP stabilize after a change in physiological situations. When BP decreases, the baroreceptor reflex signals the body to increase HR and TPR to cause an increase in BP so the body can overcome the decrease in BP. It was also to measure subjects HR and BP in response to the static and dynamic exercises. In this lab we demonstrate how the baroreceptor reflex works at rest, immediately after standing, one minute after standing; it was also demonstrated during dynamic exercises and static exercises. For the dynamic exercises we used two subjects, a male and a female, and incrementally measured their BP and HR. This data is collected while they perform two different workloads on the cycle ergometer. The static exercises were similar in that we used two different subjects, a male and a female, and measure their HR and BP incrementally while they performed wall-sits. Discussion: (a)Q:referring to the baroreceptor reflex, what did you expect to happen to BP after standing rapidly from a supine position, what happened to BP after 1 min of standing? A: I expected that BP would rapidly drop because gravity pulls blood quickly toward the feet which results in decreased venous return to the heart. In consequence to the baroreceptor reflex, BP and HR returned to normal after 1 min. (b)Q:what did you expect to see in SV after standing rapidly from a spine position and after 1 min of standing? A:I would expect that SV would drop because HR shoots up after immediately which is inversely proportional to SV and necessary for the baroreceptor reflex. After the body rests for one min after immediately standing, the BP and HR returns to almost normal (c)Q:What is the a-v O2difference?What affect does heavy exercise elicit on the a-v O2 difference and why does this occur? A: difference between venous blood and arterial blood which shows how much oxygen was consumed. The a-v o2 difference would decrease because the body is using much more oxygen during exercise(Thomas). (e) Q:which type of exercise should not be prescribed to a person with congestive heart failure? A: dynamic exercise should not be prescribed to a person with CHF because it involves and increase in CO which would put a strain on their already failing heart.
