Such a study is aimed at showing the students the impact of man on events in contrast to the deterministic/materialistic approach that sees events as only related to external causes. Greece Studies I: The origin of Democracy and the philosophical foundation of the Western world. Literature, language, history, educational philosophy and systems, mythology, religion, philosophy, politics, culture, social and economic life and institutions, technology, art, architecture, archaeology, military organization and campaigns. Islamic Studies: Quran, Hadith, Sunnah, Aqidah (Faith and Belief), Akhlaq (Morality and Ethics), Shariah (Practices and Activities), Ibadat (Man to God Worship), Muamalat (Man to Man Activities), Tarbiyah and Personal Development, History, Schools of Thought, Legal System, Theology, Islamic Jurisprudence, Caliphate, Muslim Conquests, Islamic Golden Age, Islamic Contributions through History, Islamic Movements, etc. Introduction to Economics: Economic organisation of society, basics and key concepts, scarcity, demand and supply, elasticity, utility, production, growth, opportunity costs, trade, monopolies, oligopolies, perfect competition, microeconomics, macro economics, etc. Introduction to Islamic Economics: Islamic vs Non-Islamic Economics, Foundations and Basic Precepts of Islamic Economics, Basic Assumptions human nature, materialism, ownership, universalism. Practice of Islamic Economics in present day world (Islamic Banking, Zakah, Insurance, Waqf, Al-Hisbah). Introduction to Islamic Finance: Key principles, Islamic financing structures, debt structures, Islamic Funds, Musharakah, Mudarabah, Combination of Musharakah and Mudarabah, Diminishing Musharakah, Murabahah, Ijarah, Salam, Istina, Principle of limited liability. Introduction of the Gold Dinar and Silver Dirham in the economic system: History of the Dinar and Dirham, What are the Islamic Dinar and Dirham, Uses of the Dinar and Dirham, Zakah, Legal Tender Status of the Gold Dinar and Silver Dirham. (Special project: Establish an Ottoman Gold Dinar and Silver Dirham with the Osmanli Tugra on coins. This will then be expanded to include all the Sultans. This project to be a Waqf for the Leadership Academy. Similar Waqfs to be established for all academies)

Languages: Turkish, Arabic, Spanish,French, Mandarin, Urdu (Optional) - Introduction to spoken and written language and fundamentals of grammar, with oral drills and written exercises.

2. Spiritual and Ethical Programme


Activities of this programme are conducted throughout the year with evening sessions during the week and sessions on the weekend. Activities involve: Thikr Halaqa / Study Circle The Usrah System: an intensive, spiritually-focused, activism-oriented program that develops the individual (Principles, Pillars and Practices) - i. taaruf introduction and getting to know one another, ii. tafahum mutual understanding, iii. takaful equitabilty, mutual cooperation, assistance, care and concern. Groups of Usrah as units and chains in a network of strengthening Islam. Spiritual Traditions in Islam

The Spiritual Path in Islam The Moral System of Islam The Social System of Islam Islamic Culture & Values Sacred Texts Ijtihad, Independent thinking & Critical Reasoning Spiritual Art & Poetry Sacred Music, Movements & Rituals Visits to hospitals, orphanages and old age homes

3. Key Competency Programme


The objective of this programme is to develop key competencies that are crucial to be effective as an individual and as a leader. This will take the form of weekly seminars and workshops and will take place in the evenings and over weekends. 4. Social Development Programme


The objective of this programme is to develop a sense of Infaq, service to Islam and a social developmental consciousness, and to provide necessary skills and practical experience that are crucial to be effective as a servant leader. This will take the form of seminars, workshops, team-based learning, group efforts, voluntary assignments, work camps. Topics and activities: Social Justice in Islam Charity, Zakah and Infaq Hizmet and the The Servant Leader Service: Its Methods and Manners Social and Community Development Philanthropy and Development (Including different types of Philanthropic organisations)

Public Good, Environment and Sustainable Development The Mosque as Centre/Hub for Development Establish a local community Waqf Adopt and support local community organisation / vulnerable groups (Elderly, youth, etc.) Adopt, develop and support local mosque Disaster Relief & Management

5. Physical Development Programme


The objective of this programme is to develop the mental and physical toughness required by leaders in different contacts whether civic/community or military. Skills development and activities will take place once or twice per month, including weekly hikes and other prescribed periods and will involve: Field Camps: Activities will include tactics and other concepts of military operations substantiated by simulated field operations. Field camps will be established for a few days and students participate in numerous field operations. They will be exposed to battle conditions and made to apply their tactical knowledge to hard ground situations. Endurance-Building Events: Endurance is one of the higher virtues of an effective leader. Regular stamina and endurance building exercises will be conducted to develop in the students, physical hardihood, determination and willpower. Skills and Agility: Students must become proficient in a host of individual skills. A course of numerous Physical Training Tests develops their body fitness and promotes their agility. The students have to engage in frequent tough conditioning exercises. This fitness acquired over a long period of strenuous training stays with the participants as a life-time asset. Mustering Courage: The different physical training events not merely physically harden the students, but they also develop in them a great deal of courage. There will also be: Team Building Break-aways with activities that include Waterfall Zipline, Waterfall abseiling, quad bikes, orienteering, etc.

Spring Adventure Camp (7-10 days): based on Senior Scout Adventure activities: marksmanship, sailing, rock climbing, goldpanning, etc.

Second Year Academic Programme


Political Studies II: Political thought, political and social theory, politics and sociology, foreign policy, selected themes in politics. Madinan State, Ottoman State, Khaliphate: Madina as city-state, structure and organisation of the Madina city state, The Madina Charter, The Madina Constitution. Structure and organisation of the Ottoman state, Imperial system of governance, importance of the medresse system, The Khaliphate overview, structure and organisation. Comparative analysis with contemporary political systems. Case Study - Palestine and Israel: Strategic analysis of Palestine and Israel, formation, political structure and processes, liberation struggles and wars, spatial economic development, demographic analysis, security assessment, land and natural resources, religious iconography and the politics of space, America-Israel relationship, geopolitics. A key focus will be on mapping exercises as exercises of control and entrenchment of power of select groups, and how the products of these mappings exercises - maps were physical manifestations of cognitive models of collective group identify and perceived racial/ethnic superiority. How maps are instruments with which identities were and are fabricated, reified, spatialised; and then, used as both means of, and justification for the pursuance of a specific and explicit ethnic-political agendas. The course further holds that maps and mapping, the act of producing maps, became standardised, so our cognitive environment gets influenced and shaped by the mapmakers. In many historical and contemporary instances, this have lead to, and continue to lead to, exploitation, suppression and genocide. The theoretical and conceptual architecture that holds the course together is premised on the following axioms; that maps are representations that are embedded with meaning and symbolism, the one who is doing the representation is the one coding the meanings, space is neutral the mapping and tagging of that space is value-coded i.e. the map or mental model in the head of the mapmaker, conditions the use of space, a map is a representation of certain views, policies, representing the material interests of a specific group, a map tells only one truth, the process of producing a map involves values and principles, the value with which space is coded dictates the type of behavior and association with that space, Emanating from the afore-mentioned, a map is therefore defined as a form of representation subject to the codes and conventions of representation, and can be manipulated. This representation relates to the particular interests and power of the one who does the representation / suppression. Introduction to Systems Thinking: What is a system? Why a systems perspective? Introduction to Islamic Architecture and Fine Art (Ottoman, Persian, Mughal): History of Islamic Art and Architecture: Umayyad, Abbasid, Medieval Spain and the Arab Magreb, Arab Mashriq, Iran and Central Asia, Syria, Iraq and Anatolia and South Asia. The Three Empires:Ottomans, Mughals, Safavids and Qajar; Sufi Art, Turkish, Arab and Persian works to be studied. Types of Fine Art to be covered: Mosaics, manuscripts, wall paintings, calligraphy, painting, ceramics, miniature painting, photography, glass, textiles, rugs and carpets, metalwork, Indonesian Batik. At the end of the course students should have a familiarity with the main aspects and themes of Islamic fine art and architecture; should be able to identify relevant objects assigning them accurately to their time and place; and should have developed further skills in critical reading and well-structured essay-writing.
