More choice for customers from Schneider Electric reorganisation

When Schneider Electric bought PDL seven years ago, they undertook to ensure it remained one of New Zealands iconic brands. The purchase of Clipsal, three years ago, was a major step toward keeping that promise even though that may not have been apparent at the time, as Clipsal continued to run as an independent company. On October 1st this year, Clipsal joined PDL within the Schneider family. The move coincides with the appointment of new Executive General Manager, David Gardner, and the promotion of former Schneider Electric National Sales Manager, Ray Dunn, to the role of General Manager for both the PDL and Clipsal brands. Given the complementary nature of the two brands, the move makes a lot of sense, says Ray. Both brands are well respected, and theres not a lot of overlap in their product range. Bringing them under the same roof means customers can now get access to our whole product portfolio through a single contact. Weve actually grown our technical sales team, which reects the growth of our market. And the efciencies of a single R&D structure for both brands is giving us greater freedom for product development, especially in the automation, data and medical elds. Were also looking at bringing in a wider range of Schneider products for which, until now, we would have had difculty providing sufcient technical support. Will the move see the phasing out of either brand? Just the opposite, says Ray. You talk to electrical contractors and youll quickly nd that many of them are really passionate about one or both brands. We value that loyalty and were determined to grow both brands so that they jointly add up to a complete solution for every situation. Whats more, the add-ons that our customers enjoy, such as Club Clipsal and its monthly newsletter, are also here to stay.

Modularity, Flexibility, and Chemical Resistance all combine to get new South Island Dairy Factory up and running
September 2007 saw the completion of the electrical installation at the brand new New Zealand Dairies Ltd factory situated at Studholme, South Canterbury. The $100+ million site ran its rst milk at the end of September and is expected to be fully operational in the rst week of October. Industrial Controls South Canterbury Ltd ran the electrical side of the project, and Dave Stickings, Managing Director, said We selected 56 Series as the product for the project building services due to its outstanding performance over the years, and the range of options available to match our requirements for the project. We have used the white food grade range for all process areas, for its chemical rating and it blends in well. The modular benets of the range were utilised with the distributed power supply units. A total of 35 units were put together on 16 gang enclosures (pictured below), housing the various socket outlets required with dedicated MCB protection, as well as the earth and neutral connections on studded bus bars on a gear tray under the 4 gang lid. In excess of 200 light ttings are supplied using 56 Series 3 pin 10A, and 5 pin 16A plugs and socket outlets. Dave said the idea of this was that it makes servicing so much more straightforward. Fittings are removed in less than a minute for servicing to be undertaken outside the product areas. The key point is the last thing you need is broken glass amongst the product if a lamp is dropped. I know from experience how much of a hassle it is to service xed wired lighting in an industrial/processing environment. Hours can be wasted. A great deal of planning went into the facility, and the foresight used by Industrial Controls SC Ltd was outstanding, and that combined with product selection available within the 56 Series led to a rst class solution for NZ Dairies Ltd. Stickings concluded, I believe the units will give a great service for the years to come.

One reference, one product, one solution

Schneider Electric has simplied life for electrical contractors and wholesalers with the release of a streamlined ordering system for its popular Prisma Pack Distribution Boards.
Until now, contractors have had to designon-the-y and mentally congure the various components for a distribution board when ordering, taking care to provide the correct part numbers for the different components, and then assembling it. Today, theyre able to order a selection of pre-assembled boards containing all the components using one part number. And because the boards are fully assembled with all the required components, installation is easier, neater and much faster. The boards suit different applications and are designed for large houses and commercial applications. Schneider Electrics National Business Development Manager, Brian Hughes, says while an easy-to-order, off-the-shelf distribution board is primarily about making life easier for contractors and wholesalers, its also a response to the changing wiring requirements in modern houses. Increasingly, modern houses are being equipped with home automation systems which typically include underoor heating, mood lighting and security features. With our new Prisma Pack Boards, those options are catered for with wider din rails and ample wiring space in the boards. Previously, a contractor using a catalogue would have been confronted with an array of part numbers and choices in an attempt to congure a complicated board. And then someone would have to assemble it. Now, all he has to do is select a distribution board based on the size of the house and the number of ways and din rails and order it with a single part number. The Prisma Pack Boards are available in ve different sizes ranging from 2 to 6 rows, and 48 to 144 ways. Each is available with a metal or a glass door. They are rated to 160 amps (three phase) and 100 amps (single phase) and have IP30 protection. And with the growing trend to sophisticated home automation technology, C-Bus automation products can be easily installed.

Ease of installation and good looks

With the removal of just four screws, the side panels of the boards can be removed, allowing unhindered access for the electrician during installation, says Ross de Bueger (Schneider Electrics Switchboard Systems Product Manager). Neutral bars are positioned below each din rail which associates each neutral connection with its corresponding active phase and device; there is also plenty of depth beneath the din rail, making for easier wiring. With good aesthetics, Prisma switchboards can be installed anywhere. Feedback from contractors who have used the new system has been overwhelmingly positive. All the drama has been removed from ordering a distribution board, says Kevin Rasmussen (Hamiltons Rasmussen Electrical). Where I previously had to try and congure a board in my head and take care to get all the component numbers correct now I simply cite a single part number. Its dead easy. For example, model DBPS48G stands for: Distribution Board Prima Surface 48 way. So it can take 48 circuit breakers. The G signies its a glass door rather than a metal door. And because its pre-assembled, I dont have to ddle around putting it all together. Installation is much faster and its fully adaptable. Im keen, for example, to t meters into the board that would be really easy to do. Its a great system.

Turning decay into prot

A Schneider Electric control system has helped to bring a pioneering energy-saving project in Christchurch to fruition. Using methane gas from a decaying landll to heat a nearby swimming pool complex, the project has environmental as well as bottom line benets. Burwood Landll had been Christchurchs main solid waste rubbish disposal facility for many decades. Years after it was closed and capped, investigations by the Christchurch City Council showed that the dumps decaying organic matter was producing methane gas in commercially viable quantities an equivalent thermal energy of 4.5MW. Rather than simply burning off the gas, the Council elected to use it to re an existing boiler at the QEII sports complex 3.6km from the landll. The boiler provides heat for a large pool, showers and the airconditioning. In addition, the gas would be used to generate electricity in a new 230kW cogeneration plant, with the engines waste heat captured for further use. LPG was previously used to re the boiler, and the switch to methane will not only reduce the Councils greenhouse gas emissions by some 200,000 tonnes over the next ve years, but will also save it more than $500,000 per year in LPG costs. UK company Uniare was responsible for the engineering and design of a turnkey plant to treat the landll gas and pipe it to the QEII facility. A local team of contractors (Beca Consulting, Energy Initiative, Engineering North Canterbury, Bartlett Electrical Company and electrical engineer Andrew Hayward), installed and commissioned the plant. Fifteen wells were sunk at the landll, and a fan draws the gas from them at a rate of 1000m3 per hour. After the gas is chilled (to remove any condensate), its compressed and pumped along the 3.6km pipeline to the QEII facility.

Communication & Control

Maintaining the correct pressure and ow of the gas through the pipeline is fundamental to the success of the project. QEIIs demand for gas varies according to weather conditions, and the more gas it draws, the greater the pressure drop in the pipeline. The system automatically adjusts to any uctuations in gas demand, says Hayward, thanks to the use of Quantum PLCs, Altivar 61 variable speed drives and a radio link. The Altivar drives are connected to two compressors at the treatment plant, and the drives communicate (via a Modbus link) with a Quantum PLC. This PLC talks (via the radio link) to a second Quantum PLC at the QEII facility. Gas pressure at QEII is constantly relayed back to the treatment plant via the two PLCs and the radio link. The QEII pressure is continuously controlled by adjusting the speed of the variable speed drives taking into account the QEII and treatment plant gas pressures. In this way, says Hayward, gas pressure remains steady. PLCs communicating with the Altivars and the compressors offer a very cost-efcient operation. Compressor speeds are managed to precisely meet the demand from QEII, which at present requires only one of the two compressors to be running. Hayward says most of the Schneider Electric components were pre-assembled

overseas by Uniare and connected locally by Bartlett Electrical. My job was site commissioning and ne-tuning the programme, adapting it to the specic application. Id worked with the Unity programming software previously its very intuitive so it was a relatively painless commissioning process. As well as relaying pressure data back from QEII, the Quantum PLC at the treatment plant controls all functional and safety aspects. The plants status and alarm conditions are monitored constantly and relayed to QEII, says Hayward, and the Quantum PLC at QEII is linked to the facilitys Building Management System (BMS). That, in turn, is connected to the City Council network, which means Council crews can remotely monitor and interrogate the gas plant and the system. Its a very neat solution. The pipeline was ofcially opened by Prime Minister Helen Clark earlier this year. For more information, contact Customer Care on 0800 652 999 or visit our website www.schneider-electric.co.nz

Customer satisfaction the focus

Schneider Electric Engineered Services, operating nationwide, continues to make value and excellence the two dening terms for its preventative maintenance and timely repair solutions available to customers nationwide.
Electric Engineered Services that he thought multiple Telemecanique ATV71 VSDs had suffered damaged from an external wiring fault. To add insult to injury Production were demanding the plant be operational by the next day (Saturday). The call was received at approximately 7pm via Schneider Electrics 24/7 emergency support line. With service coordination and Auckland warehouse staff support, Engineered Services had a number of VSDs and parts on a courier and away to site that same Friday night. The site was provided with freight tracking information as it came to hand and by 11.30pm that night Engineered Services had conrmed the ETA of all the items arriving at Nelson airport the next morning. The items would be onsite well before midday, ready for installation. The items were received on time and the plant was up and running the next day as required. Our customer was very appreciative of the support and quality of service provided, commenting that it was far beyond what we see from many other suppliers these days! Well done the Schneider services and logistics team! Engineered Services is now offering support for non-Schneider products. With its vast experience in VSDs and with a top-class load testing facility available at its Napier Service Centre, Engineered Services will now provide both testing and servicing of Schneider, PDL and nonSchneider VSDs. It makes sense to fully utilise this facility, which not only houses top drive service technicians but also the international support centre with their vast experience and application knowledge, says Mark Sweeney, National Services Manager. Engineered Services was formed around the core of the PDL drives services team and in recent times has been expanding to provide a broader range of services. Schneider, being a leading supplier of ACBs in New Zealand with the Merlin Gerin range, now offers testing of these units as well as upgrades and retrot products through the Engineered Services team. Service Contract clients can now access their service records from the Schneider service website. This gives them information on their installed base of equipment, equipment settings and service reports. The Web-based service also attaches relevant information about equipment to a graphic representation of the electrical network. By broadening its range of services and using the wealth of skills and knowledge available, Schneider Electric New Zealand and its international support network, Schneider Electric Engineered Services is able to offer clients an increasingly sophisticated level of service. This ensures value and excellence in service delivery is a driving force for Schneider Electric Engineered Services. Schneider Electrics After Hours Service is available Nationwide 24/7, 365 days a year on 0800 472 463.

Schneider Electric Engineered Services interfaces with the Sales, Technical support and logistics teams to ensure customer sites are kept operational. This is accomplished by consistently exceeding customer expectations for performance and support. When a Schneider product is returned for repair or servicing (such as Variable Speed Drives (VSDs), Air Circuit Breakers (ACBs), or Power Factor Correction (PFCs)), customer satisfaction is always the primary focus. Schneider Electrics objective is to provide continuous improvement through customer feedback, and the Engineered Services Helpdesk function plays a pivotal role in achieving this objective, ultimately delivering better support and focused solutions. Over the past few years, Schneider Electric Engineered Services has visited hundreds of customer sites throughout New Zealand for Product repair. As its planned preventative maintenance contracts and recommended initiatives are adopted, a company can notice a marked decline in operational and production failures, ensuring the minimisation of downtime, production losses and emergency support requirements. However, Schneider Electric is always ready for emergencies a recent incident through the 24/7 helpline is just one example. One Friday night, a South Island onsite contractor advised Schneider

Intelligent Metering Solutions

With the drive to reduce power costs and increase power quality now reaching industrial sites and commercial enterprises up and down the country, how do you work out where to target?
Knowing where, when and how your business uses power is the vital rst step in achieving signicant power savings, says Quasar Systems Keith Hitchings, and this begins with the installation of an integrated metering solution. Meter distributors and integration specialists Quasar Systems Ltd has been helping businesses manage power quality issues and identify and achieve energy savings targets for more than 15 years. Hitchings says while power companies have invested in intelligent metering solutions for many years, small and medium-sized enterprises can also benet from the greater breadth of power meter monitoring options to help manage their energy spend. Each problem has a commercial implication and a cost factor. Smart operators know this and use meters to safeguard their investment in plant automation. To better assist businesses benet from tailored metering solutions Quasar Systems has consolidated its arrangements with meter supplier Schneider Electric and broadened the range and type of meters it offers. In 2005 Schneider Electric purchased Canadian electronics manufacturer Power Measurement Ltd and acquired its top-end ION range of meters to add to its own PowerLogic range. Quasar has represented ION in New Zealand for 15 years and now has the benet of local supply to expand its sales and engineering services along with the inclusion of Schneiders PowerLogic range in its line-up. This follows the integration of high-end ION-branded revenue meters within Schneider Electrics own PowerLogic meter range. Schneider Electric marketing manager (Automation and Power) Paul Stephens says Schneider has absorbed Power Measurements operation within Schneider Electrics business framework but retained the ION brand on its products which are now a leading part of its PowerLogic offer. Stephens says Quasar will retain its status as Schneiders preferred systems integrator for high-end ION metering solutions. Large industrial and manufacturing plants like Fletcher Steel and Fisher & Paykel know the value of real-time metering and rely on it to manage every aspect of energy use across a wide variety of cost centres. Smaller plants can benet just the same. But revenue metering is only one area where cost savings can be achieved. Metering is also commonly used to monitor the full range of a plants vital power signs. These include over-current and power spikes, voltage interference and irregularities, harmonics and power factor imbalance. Quasar will continue to service the utilities sector and large industrial clients, and they now have full access to Schneider Electrics PowerLogic range of meters. But, in taking PowerLogic to market under its own banner, Schneider is also offering ION engineered solutions with Quasar providing integration, where necessary. This effectively creates a second channel to market for the expanded PowerLogic range, but well be concentrating more on marketing and distributing the PowerLogic range to switchboard builders and through electrical wholesalers. We will also help Quasar grow its business in the commercial, manufacturing and lightindustrial sectors, says Stephens. Hitchings says gaining access to the full PowerLogic range with the technical backing of Schneider creates a valuable opportunity to diversify and expand its business. We are now offering customers metering options across a much broader range of applications. Together weve established a pathway for both companies to work collaboratively on large multi-faceted projects. While this is new territory for both businesses it offers a big win for customers and were looking forward to it. Stephens says ION technology offers Schneider customers an enhanced, compatible and expanding breadth of capabilities and support. Bringing ION under the Power Logic brand has effectively created the worlds largest unied offering of intelligent metering solutions addressing energy cost, energy efciency, power quality and reliability.

Keith Hitchings from Quasar and Paul Stephens from Schneider Electric signing the agreement.

Intellisys Show Home

Gulf Harbour
C-Bus Control and Management technology and quality, containing features of new-age systems and opulent accessories.
Nestled on the edge of a cliff, this home incorporates stunning ocean landscapes, spectacular scenery and cutting edge technology and design to create a sophisticated and yet simplied style of living. A concept over four years in the making, every product and material used in the house was extensively researched and carefully selected. The owner and founder of Intellisys Ltd, Des Dass and his son Rohan managed and planned the project personally, spending two long years researching and designing their new home, which then took another two years to build. This house project was designed and built to serve both as a luxury home and a showcase for their automation and integration business, Intellisys Ltd. So it is no surprise that the house is loaded with many highly functional and centralised controls to ensure an unsurpassed level of security, comfort and management. The house contains 148 C-Bus controlled electrical circuits, and features motorised blinds, six-zone irrigation system, multi-zone underoor heating, fully integrated security system including central locking, a heated pool and spa, multi-room audio, high denition video and a home theatre system, all of which can be controlled via C-Bus. The C-Bus Colour Touch Screen (complete with logic functions) has been used to create many clever scenes and schedules regular automated occurrences, dependent on issues such as time, date, or other sensor readings. One important schedule controls the electric blinds. As the house features many large glass areas to take full advantage of the spectacular views, sun strike tends to be an issue mid-afternoon. To remove this annoyance and protect their beautiful home from sun fading, the blinds have been set to lower in the affected areas at the appropriate time. The blinds will then remain closed until the following morning, when they will automatically raise themselves again. Another clever feature, operated from the Colour Touch Screen or locally at the Saturn key inputs, is the central locking system. A plan of the entire house and all exterior doors can be viewed from the colour touch

screen, showing which areas are locked or unlocked at any given time. With a simple screen press, the entire house can be secured, or the gate and entrance door can be unlocked for guests about to arrive. In the generous living and outdoor entertainment areas, numerous scenes have been set up on the Saturn DLT key inputs, such as a party scene or dinner scene, plus quieter scenes for reading or relaxing. These scenes turn on or dim down the appropriate lighting, as well as the water feature in the entranceway (complete with its own feature lighting sequences) or even the gas replaces at either end of the living area. These scenes are complemented by Windows Media Centre, controlling the music and entertainment all conveniently from the C-Bus Touch Screens, DLTs and other universal hand-held remote controls. The crowning glory of the house, though, would have to be the spectacular home theatre room. Featuring a sophisticated Hi Denition LCOS projection system and comfortable leather armchairs on raised levels, the state-of-the-art 9.2 surround sound system ensures a memorable experience when watching movies, accompanied by the motion-master moving seats which capture every movement experienced on the screen.

Operated from the local Touch Screen or a convenient hand-held remote control, at the press of a button the start-up scene commences the blinds lower, a fascinating lighting sequence plays around the room while the selected DVD loads, and the projector and amplier turn on as the main lighting dims down. Further integration by Intellisys allows the control and surveillance of the house via the Internet or a touch-tone phone, from anywhere in the world. This was specically developed as a great option for homeowners who travel a lot or own holiday/weekend homes. The house and the C-Bus system have been carefully designed and implemented for ultimate enjoyment and ease of use. From the basic use of sensors to turn on lighting automatically when you enter hallway, to the complex scheduling and scenes for entertaining, its easy to take for granted the convenience of an automated home. Intellisys Ltd is an Authorised C-Bus Installer and is currently involved in the design, programming, project management and installation of many residential and commercial projects around New Zealand. Des and Rohan can be contacted at Ph (09)-4284880 or consulting@intellisys.co.nz
