NIBC’s hardware platform consists mainly of virtualized Windows servers on a VMware platform. VMware is
used for scalability and resource management and also to improve the availability of the IT environment.
Users work with various front-, middle-, and back-office applications like Financial Studio, Front Arena, and
OPICS, as well as some custom applications. All applications run on SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005.

The Challenge Overview

NIBC thoroughly evaluated the available backup and recovery products for SQL Server. The bank read hour to five minutes

reviews, interviewed user groups, ran trial versions, and met with vendors. In particular, the company
examined SQL Backup Pro from Red Gate Software, SQLsafe from Idera, and LiteSpeed™ for SQL Server
from Quest Software.

After careful analysis, NIBC chose LiteSpeed for SQL Server, based on customer reviews, the product’s breadth
of features, and Quest’s reputation for excellent customer service. “Many companies are completely satisfied

The Bottom Line

With LiteSpeed for SQL Server in place, Rijnbergen reported, NIBC’s backup files have been compressed
75 percent, from 4 gigabyte (GB) to 1 GB. “We reduce costs because we need less disk space for
database backups.”

Moreover, the backup process is significantly faster. According to Rijnbergen, backups that used to take
a full hour are now competed in five minutes. LiteSpeed for SQL Server’s centralized reporting has also
made managing NIBC’s IT environment easier and more efficient. “We just have one overview of all
backups and thus save an enormous amount of time,” commented Rijnbergen.

NIBC was also pleased with the support that Quest provided. “I would recommend Quest support to
