Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome to Cricklefields for this afternoons Ryman League Division 1 North match with Redbridge. We wish their players, supporters and officials a pleasant stay with us and a safe journey home. We also extend a warm welcome to todays team of match officials. I am writing these notes, and compiling the programme ahead of the Easter Weekend, so I must apologise that they do not take into account our match with Maldon and Tiptree at the weekend. Our win over Cheshunt last weekend made our survival mathematically certain for this season. Given our excellent start to the season, it may seem odd that survival was still our main aim. However, matters off the field for the past few years have meant that our one priority has been to stay at Step 4. Truth be told, we have been coasting along since about October, picking up the odd win here and there, just to make sure we are not caught by the bottom trio of Ilford, Ware and Great Wakering Rovers. Last weekend, all three of the bottom clubs lost, showing that it really wont take very much for one of these clubs to escape relegation. Sadly for the two who do not make it out of the drop zone, it would appear that reprieves may not be as forthcoming this year as in previous seasons. As it stands, it looks as if step five will be able to fill their quota of 12 teams from 15 divisions. In fact, as it stands, there will be 13 sides who have finished in promotion positions, have applied for promotion and have the correct ground grading. Unlike other seasons, I havent heard any concrete rumours (if there is such a thing) about any Step 4 clubs which may be asking for demotion at the end of the season. This may give the FA a serious problem when it comes to restructuring. The FA have made it known that they are looking into restructuring steps 4 and 5 once more, with the abolition of two step 5 divisions, of which the Essex Senior will more than likely be one. As far as I am aware, any massive changes will be made at the end of next season, but the FA may be forced into making these changes sooner than they may have liked. Perhaps well end up back in the Southern League

Stand-in Forest captain Inaki Ordono in actio against Maldon and Tiptree. For a full report, head to page 18.

again next season? Who knows! After todays match, we are left with three more. Away to Harlow Town, at home to Great Wakering Rovers and away to Ware on the final day of the season. These closer to these matches we get, the more important they seem to be, and it makes a change to be the ones with nothing to worry about. Finally, Aveleys relegation from the Premier Division has now been confirmed, so it seems we will be seeing our friends at Mill Field again, after their two season spell at Step 3. Enjoy the game.

news

With only 0.59 and 0.49 points per game, Great wakering and Ware look a long way from any possible reprieve. Fleet Town are currently first in line for any reprieve, with 0.89 points per game. Today is the first time since the 2007-8 season that we have been at home on Easter Monday. In 2008, we lost 1-0 to Ilford, in what turned out to be our final match at Wadham Lodge. Manu Daghers 11th goal of the season on Saturday made him our joint top scorer. The last time we have two players score 10 goals each was 2008-9, when Yacine Hamada and Joel Palmer got 10 each.
DEKANSKI JOINS THE HAWKS Jack Dekanski will see out the remainder of the season with Harlow Town. The Leyton Orient Scholar made two appearances while on loan with us, in February and March.

LEISTON BOSS AMONGST AWARD WINNERS

Ilford keeper Rob Budd may have earned a place in his clubs folklore after netting the only goal of their home game against Potters Bar Town on Saturday. Budds free-kick from his own penalty area in the 75th minute beat his opposite number Matt Bennett and gave his side a five-point cushion in the Ryman League Division One North relegation battle.

END OF SEASON AWARDS

Jason Willis, winner of last seasons award

Witham Town confirmed their place as Champions of the Essex Senior League yesterday with a 1-0 win over Takeley. After being relegated at the end of the 2008-9 season, Witham have finished runners-up and third placed in previous Essex Senior League seasons. They will now no doubt take their place in the Ryman Division 1 North, as their ground is assumed to have the required grading.

WITHAM WIN ESSEX SENIOR LEAGUE

A few weeks ago, Luke Stanley made his 100th appearance for the club! Luke made his debut way back on the 25th of October 2008, when we lost 4-2 to Ware. To date, Luke has made 105 appearances for the club (including sub appearances), earning him a place in our top 20 list of all-time appearance makers. Injury has kept him out of the last few games, but he should be soon making a comeback.

CONGRATULATIONS LUKE!

Today we welcome Redbridge to Cricklefields for their third visit this season. On the 8th of October they defeated Ilford 3-2 in the FA Trophy, and on the 28th of January this year, they won 2-1. After a slow start to the league season (though that may be in part down to their excellent FA Cup run), Redbridge have hit some real form of late, and find themselves 8th in the table, only 6 points off a play-off places (at the time of writing). It would take a bit of luck for results to go their way, and for the Motormen to creep into the top five, but they will no doubt be happy with their season none the less. Given that Redbridge are based only a few miles from us, it is no surprise to see a number of former players amongst their ranks. In their squad today, we should see Jamie Haywood, Joe Ellul, Michael Toner, Perry Burns and Vinny Durrant. We have only beaten Redbridge three times in 12 attempts, and the most memorable of those victories is without a doubt the 3-0 win on the 10th of March 2007. A Redbridge side which included Wayne Brown contrived to give away tree second half penalties. Each penalty was taken by the same

Andrew Thomas takes his second of three penalties against Redbridge in 2007

player, Andrew Thomas, who had no problem in dispatching all three spot kicks into the same corner of the goal, with the same result every time. Since that season, Redbridge were play-off final losers to Concord Rangers, and had an excellent FA Cup run, as previously mentioned. Though in between these two seasons, the Motormen have had a couple of indifferent campaigns, highlighting perhaps how unstable the non-league game is. Redbridge will finish the season with matches against Heybridge Swifts, Brentwood Town and Chatham Town. With all four clubs seemingly unable to mount a final play-off charge, Redbridge will no doubt simply be going through the motions now, much as we have since about October! Terry Spillanes first season managing at Step 4 has no doubt been a resounding success, and I am sure that he and the rest of his squad at Redbridge will be hoping to build on this season and have an even better one for 2012-13. One final word: Redbridge have been nominated for the Ronnie Radford Award, for their win over Ebbsfleet United. You can vote for them at www.thefa.com.

TERRY SPILLANE Position: Manager Joined in the summer from Essex Senior League side Stansted where he helped turn the club around and had much success including a league championship win, league cup win along with getting to the final sixteen of the FA Vase. He has already targeted a top eight finish for the Motormen this season. JODY BROWN Position: Coach Was put in place as temporary manager for the 2nd half of last season and the club is pleased that he has agreed to continue with us in a coaching role. Jody brings with him over 10 years of coaching experience and offers a professional approach on the training ground looking to develop the young players within the squad. DARRAN GEORGE Position: Coach Enthusiastic and hard working makes him a great asset to the management team, is always looking to improve things.

The Tree SURGEON

Today we welcome, play off outsiders Redbridge who have enjoyed a wonderful FA Cup run this season, but, as so often happens, it left them with a hangover, once they went out of the competition and they lost points in some vitals games, which is why they are only outsiders for the play offs now, against the likes of Enfield /Harlow/ Grays/Tilbury and a few others. We have no such aspirations, but, that will not mean we are going to roll over a die for them, if they are to win today, our side has shown recently, that Redbridge will have to work very hard for their three points. I am typing this a week in advance of this game, so no news on our trip to moneybags Maldon & Tiptree, who, judging by recent results, have started to show the type of form they would have hoped for, from the beginning of the season. That is why they sit a few places above us and not, as they probably

expected nearer to our visitors today. It just goes to show that throwing money at a team does not guarantee success the position of todays visitors shows what can be achieved on a much more modest budget if you get the right manager and right group of players under him. What can you say about our victory against Cheshunt, except that it brought back marvellous memories of fighting spirit shown at the start of the season and certainly, I dont think that Cheshunt can complain about the result. It was good to see the return of Aaron in goal, after his long injury lay off and a couple of useful saves, before the dismissal of Adrian meant we were not already chasing the game once we went down to ten. It is said that teams respond to going a man down perhaps they do, but, we had to play at least seventy minutes with a man disadvantage and add to that the returning goal keeper and two debutants, it could hardly be said we started with a settled

side, in the first place. The contribution from all the players was immense, but, special mention to the Isaki free kick which, as you can all see from the photos on the club web site, gave their keeper no earthly chance of getting to it. We have to show the same determination today and also hope we did the same on Saturday and came back from the wilds of Essex with another three points. I mentioned earlier in this article about getting the right manager and right group of players and , I have been hearing recently, what a fantastic job Wale has done here under extremely difficult circumstances and how most supporters would like the bulk of this first team squad to stay for next seasons campaign. Although I have not seen any of the games, I have to say that it does seem to me we have found players with the appetite to do well for us and we know we have the manager to mould those players into a good unit next season. Hopefully, we can underline those credentials today and put a smile on our faces as we polish off our Easter eggs.

whos going down?

It makes a change from recent years that we have not been involved in a relegation dog fight. Our fantastic start no doubt helped, and the team must be given credit for their continued fight through a tough winter. With only four games to go for the bottom four sides, we take a look at who we could see leaving us at the end of the year. (Written 5.5.12) SOHAM TOWN RANGERS The Cambridgeshire side are undoubetly one of the surprises at the bottom of the table. When we visted them on the opening day of the season, we were told of a playing budget which would make some step 3 clubs look frugal. It took them a while to get used to the unique brand of football in Division 1 North, and only six wins all season has seen them spend most of the season precariously close to the bottom two. Their last four matches could yet prove to be the most important. Today, they travel to AFC Sudbury, before hosting Great Wakering Rovers and Ilford on consecutive Saturdays, before finishing off the season away to Maldon and Tiptree. One would expect that four points from these four games should see them safe, as at the time of writing, they already have a seven point gap above the bottom two. ILFORD Unlike Soham, few would have expected Ilford to have had a season where they have been anywhere else than in the bottom few positions. On the occasions that I have seen Ilford this season, they have certainly not looked as bad as their league position would suggest. Though theres no avoiding the league table which shows our landlords with only 24 points from 37 games. It seems that all the bottom sides are playing each other at the end of this season, and Ilford finish with matches again Brentwood (today), Ware, Soham Town Rangers and Harlow Town. Colin Walton will be hoping to take maximum points from Brentwood, whose season is effectively over, but the games again Ware, Soham and Harlow will prove to be a lot more difficult. GREAT WAKERING ROVERS Despite appointing former player and hero Dan Trenkel, the Southend club have not been able to reverse a decline which began at the start of the season. Great Wakering had been continiously improving in recent years, but as we have seen with the likes of Wivenhoe, one bad season came spell the end of a clubs step 4 status. With the joint worst defence in the league, it is no surprise that Great Wakering are 21st in the table. They have lost 23 matches, fewer than Ilford and Ware, but they have only won four times all season. Rovers finish with matches against Tilbury, Soham, Waltham Forest and Romford. WARE Another side who many did not expect to be at the bottom of the table is Ware. Finishing with matches against Harlow, Ilford, Potters Bar and Waltham Forest, the Hertfordshire club have possibly the hardest run out of the bottom four clubs. They also sit six points from safety, meaning it would take a near miracle for them to be saved. It does not look good for Ware in terms of a reprieve either, as they currently sit 9th in line to be saved, with only Stourport Swifts below them. At this late stage, Soham Town Rangers should have enough points on the board to stay up. Ilford, known for their strong finishes will no doubt show their team spirit once more which has got them out of trouble so many times before. Unfortunately for Great Wakering and Ware, it would appear that any further victories would be too little too late.

match action
A lack-lustre Waltham Forest fell to a 3-0 defeat to the hands of Maldon & Tiptree. Matt Waldron and Josh Greens inavailability, coupled with an injury to captain Adrian Clifton meant that Forest travelled to Maldon with only 12 players. The home side opened the more lively out of the two, and went close on just five minutes when Omand was forced to tip the ball over the bar accrobatically. Sosthene Yao then had the best chance of the match. A long ball over the top allowed Yao to beat the off-side trap, with the Forest defence expencting the linesman to raise his flag, which stayed down. Yao had all the time in the world to pick his spot in the goal, but instead fired straight at the on-rushing Omand. Forest did force a couple of corners towards the end of the first half, with Bondon and Thomas connecting well, but both their headers fell just wide. Maldon took the lead on 61, but there was a hint of controversy surrounding their goal, with Forest apparently stopping, expecting the referee to blow up for hand-ball. However, play continued and Joe Pearman fired in from just inside the Forest half. It was 2-0 to the home side not long after, when Ross Wall cut through the Forest defence like a knife through butter. Omand did manage to smother Walls initial shot, but the rebound fell kindly and he was able to poke the ball into an unguarded net. With Forest searching for a way back into the game, it was no surprise that Maldon scored again. A deep free-kick was met by Leon Antione at the back post who made no mistake in helping the ball over the line. On a surpisingly cold April day, this match was a drab encounter between two sides who can neither make the playoffs nor be dragged into a relegation battle. Elsewhere, a win for Ilford makes any chances of survival for the bottom two all the more unlikely. Ware beat Thamesmead Town 2-1, but it appears that it may be too little too late for the Hertfordshire side. Forest: Omand, Conteh, Ordono, Sackey, Shittu, Bondon, Moore, Djiomo-Nyah, Taylor, Palmer, Dagher. Sub: Iyaki, on for Dagher. Bookings: Ordono.

news
The future of Basildon United still remains unclear after the club missed the deadline to apply to play in next seasons Olympian league, the Echo reports. The Bees resigned from the Essex Senior League last month, but they have not asked to join the Step 6 league before the 31st of March deadline. A spokesman for the club said they still hope to be in a position to withdraw their resignation from the ESL at its AGM on June 13. Rob Errington, chairman of the ESL, explained that Hertfordshire Senior County League Premier Division Goffs Oak had applied to join the ESL. He said that Goffs Oak ground-share with current ESL side Enfield 1893 and, should they finish in the top three in their division, they would be eligible to come into the ESL. Buckhurst Hill had also applied to join the ESL, but have since withdrawn.

DEADLINE MISS LEAVES BEES FUTURE IN DOUBT

Lancing Football Club will not be playing Ryman League football next season after failing their ground grading. Lancers fantastic season has seen them battling for one of the promotion spots at the top of County League Division 1, but even if they do finish in the top two, Culver Road has, surprisingly, not passed an inspection by Ryman officials. Lancers rent the ground from the Sussex FA, who own the ground and whose headquarters are based at the site. The ground failed because of a lack of outside toilets, the hard standing around the ground stops short of the pitch barriers, and other small points, such as signs and the press facilities need additions, such as lights. Some of these were expected and had been planned for but others, such as the work to extend the hard standing, could not be completed by the March 31 deadline. They are now looking to work with their landlords, the Sussex FA, who must carry out the work, to bring the improvements in place, so they can apply again next season. (Shoreham Herald) CLIFTON TO MISS THREE Following his sending off against Cheshunt, Adrian Clifton has been given a three match band, and will miss the final three matches of the season against Harlow, Great Wakering Rovers and Ware.

LANCING FAIL GROUND GRADING

Chris Tracey, manager of AFC Sudbury, secured the signatures of two of Leyton Orients most promising youngsters. Joining AFC until the end of the season are defender Joe ODonoghue and forward Afolabi Obafemi. Both are playing in the Leyton Orient youth set up and will be used by AFC to give them experience and to provide cover and competition for places in the squad.

Shepshed Dynamo are guaranteed to finish in an Evostik Northern Premier League Division One South relegation place after a 4-1 home defeat to Stamford AFC on Good Friday. The Leicestershire side are bottom of their division with 24 points from 39 matches. This total however, does place them 5th on a list of possible reprieves, above both Great Wakering Rovers and Ilford. Despite this, it looks like their fate may still be sealed, as there are currently 13 teams in promotion places with the promition requirements, hoping to fill just 12 places.

DYNAMO RELEGATED

The Brentwood Town ground has been closed by the Ryman League, a statement on the club website is reporting. A club statement read:This is because the Ryman League have decided that we cannot play at The Arena until we install a retractable tunnel between the dressing rooms and the pitch. Unfortunately, this was due for delivery from Spain this week but got caught up in the pre-Easter transport strikes in Europe. Their Easter Monday fixture with Ilford, at least, will be played at Redbridges Oakside ground, until any problems with the Brentwood Arena are rectified and the ground is cleared as fit to play once again.

BRENTWOOD GROUND CLOSED BY LEAGUE

Former Forest keeper Elliot Justham is spent two days last week with npower League One side Stevenage. Justham, who has already spend time with both Reading and Southend United, is determined to make the grade as a full-time professional. Brentwood Manager Steve Witherspoon said If something comes out of his time there this week then he goes with our full support.

WITH THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER

WHAT price a goalscorer? Well, not even a million pounds if you are Fleetwood Town! A lot like London Underground, strike rates seem to be at an all-time high with the quality of forwardmen bamboozling defenders throughout NonLeague football sky high as they jostle for supremacy in the scoring charts. The golden boot battle is sometimes more competitive than the title race itself, so here is the low-down on all the sharp shooters. Jamie Vardy needs no introduction. Widely regarded as the best player to ever grace the Conference, his beauty at Bath City last weekend took his tally to 35 in all competitions. Not only have his goals pushed the Cod Army to within sight of the Blue Square Bet Premier title but the tills will soon be ringing. Inexplicably both Southampton and Leicester City saw seven figure bids for the player rebuffed in January but they will surely sell once promotion is rubber stamped. Let the bidding

war begin! Vardy wont be alone. Peterborough United and Chelsea if you believe the rumour mill - are already watching Grimsbys Liam Hearn, while Jon Shaw the Gateshead goal machine seems to score most weeks. Both are five goals away from Vardy as it stands and like Wrexham in the title race they need to get their shooting boots back on to keep the name of Fleetwood Town off the trophy. You may ask yourself how a player can hit the back of the net 40 times in the league and their club still not be anywhere near the playoffs! Thats the conundrum faced by Altrincham manager Lee Sinnott and his sides supporters as Damian Reeves has blazed a trail in the Blue Square Bet North. Penny for the thoughts of Hydes Scott Spencer too. If it wasnt for Reeves prowess, he would soon be decorated as the divisions master. His 26 goals though pale into insignificance in comparison. Its a one-horse race in the Blue Square Bet South

as well. Tonbridge Angels fans so excited about the summer return of iconic Jon Main have another goalgetting hero, with Frannie Collin making waves with 26 to his name. Theres a big race on in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League with five players separated by just two goals. Leading the way is Chorleys Steve Foster with 18 but just behind are Alex Steadman, of Mickleover, and FC Uniteds Matthew Wolfenden with 17. Dont rule out Wolfendens partner-in-crime Michael Norton or Marines Neil Harvey, who sit just one goal behind. Its not so tight in the Southern Premier, with Bedford Town hotshot Drew Roberts sitting pretty on 30, with nearest rivals Jamie Towers of Barwell and Hitchins John Frendo both grabbing 21. Theres rarely more than one man in the Ryman League but this year Richard Jolly has company. His 23 league goals for Wealdstone are in the eye-line of Concords Tony Stokes, AFC Hornchurch ace Martin Tuohy and East Thurrocks Sam Higgins, who are all hitting form at just the right time.

THE BEER HUNTERS GUIDE TO HARLOW

There are beer deserts....and then there is Harlow. True, the town does have a few pubs scattered around it, including a centrally-located Wetherspoons - the William Aylmer in Kitson Way, near the bus station - but theres nothing whatever within striking distance of the ground. However, if you arrive by train you could take a short detour to check out the Moorhen across the river in Burnt Mill Road - though a check on that essential travellers guide, www.beerintheevening.com, doesnt hold out much hope there for the beer enthusiast. A little further up the same road is the Dusty Miller, which is listed as having a good pint of McMullens....but that report was filed in 2005, so what its like now is anybodys guess. The football ground itself is one of the most impressive and well-appointed in our Division, but alas the Bar had no real ale last time we were there, and the Beer Hunter

was reduced to disconsolately sipping a pre-match Guinness from a plastic glass (which for some reason his fellow travelling supporters found highly amusing). Still, even that will be an improvement on our experience at Leyton last Tuesday night - not only no real ale, but nothing on draught or keg at all, and a whopping 3 being charged for a half-pint bottle of Becks or Guinness. Very disappointing to say the least, especially with Brodies Brewery only a mile up the road. Only one away match gone so far, and already we have a front runner for the Beer Hunters Wooden Spoon award for the season!
