The Department of Mass Communication believes that in order to become competitive and be equipped as future media practitioners, something must be undertaken that will surpass classroom experience. And one way to achieve this is to create opportunities where students can interact with communications and media professionals. The departments first educational media tour was done in Manila in 2009 and it was a remarkable experience for the communication enthusiasts to learn from the exchange of ideas during symposia, workshops and other activities that introduced them to the real media work. In May 2011, the students embarked on an international trip in which they got the chance to visit Singapores top three universities, namely: Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore and Singapore Management University. From Singapore, the students headed to Malaysia for another round of campus tours in the most acclaimed university for innovation and creativity, the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology; in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia also known as the National University of Malaysia; and in Sunway University. They also had the chance to discuss some issues and problems of the mass media with practitioners from BFM 89.9- The Business Radio.

It was one-of-a kind experience. Its our first time to visit those universities and it was really educational as we toured the campuses and had the time to interact with the professors and representatives from each institution, said Judahnissi Calabaroso, a Mass Comm senior. The Mass Communicators in Action Society officers disclosed that the event would not have been possible without the sincere support of the Administration and the School President. We really thank the School President from the bottom of our hearts for accommodating us. We stayed at the Kingdom Headquarters in Singapore and Malaysia and we were provided with all our needs--nice food, car for our daily schedules and we also got the chance to buy some pasalubongs, quipped another Mass Comm senior, Al Jehanne Casuyac. Mass Communication Department Head Miss Maribel Lanticse also expressed her thanks to all those who supported the big project. Embarking on an international trip is not easy. It needs a lot of preparation, a lot of prayers and faith. It took us months to coordinate with the university heads and representatives. But I really give glory to the Father for making all things possible and I thank Pastor Apollo for giving us this very rare privilege, said Miss Lanticse. She added that the trip was very enlightening, at the same time, it made them realize that there is so much that the Philippine Government can and should do to advance the educational system of the country especially in the childrens basic education in public schools. While other countries enjoy significant progress in education with the best of the worlds technologies, the Philippines continues to struggle despite all the resources it has to be at par with its neighbors. Nonetheless, the realization of the educational tour was seen to be an occasion for students to think and learn beyond the four corners of the classroom and to prepare them in the field they have chosen.

We thrive on learning that is dynamic and progressive. In the Mass Communication Department, we create opportunities where our students talents, abilities and skills can be highly honed. We innovate to be always at par not just with the nations best but with the finest in the world. While fulfilling all these objectives, we always see to it that we view education not only as an avenue to produce intellectual minds, but also as a valuable process cultivating the right values and a deep sense of social responsibility. The Department has been in operation for seven years and we have seen how our graduates fare in the working world. It is always our goal to become a premier academic institution in the field of communication producing vibrant and high performing graduates. This academic year 2011-2012, our students have performed outstandingly in various interdepartmental and intercollegiate competitions. Their exceptional performance in the 2011 Intercollegiate Advertising Congress, where they bested other competing institutions and garnered five out of the eight major awards, is a concrete evidence of the students wit and astuteness polished by hard work, endurance and determination. The first international media tour in Singapore and Malaysia in May 2011 is a remarkable feat that the Department has ever achieved. This event, which has become an annual activity, is aimed at exposing our students to the world. We believed that this is one effective way of shaping and widening our students horizons. The continued support of the Administration and Sonshine Media Network International is one thing that the department has never failed to recognize. Most importantly, all its achievements have been made possible by the grace of the Almighty Father, the source of all wisdom and success, and through the kind support of the Founding President, Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy, who always believes in the power of right education to transform lives. Our Mass Comm Seniors have created and left a legacy of excellence for the next generation of students to emulate. With all the Departments accomplishments, our students have become more motivated to forever hold the banner high; and while being critical, fulfill their role as agents of change and see communication as a tool for development. With commitment coupled with strong ethical values, the members of the Mass Communicators in Action Society are set in a direction where they are ready to blaze new trails and break every barrier through innovation, creativity and communication.

They say that in every great mind lies a great pack of training and a bundle of passion and determination. The Mass Communication program of the Jose Maria College has once again proven that learning outside the classroom walls can be equally effective and important to the success of students in developing and bringing out the best in them. It believes that purpose and fervor are what it takes to become equipped in whatever field an individual is seeking. In application of the theories learned from MC 119 (Theater Arts and Production) class, the Mass Comm seniors invaded the Queen City of the South for the finale of the Radyoke Challenge: Battle of the Champs 2011 initiated by DYAR 765 Sonshine Radio Cebu. This is an annual event that showcases the talents of young singing aficionados in the Visayas region. Together with Professor Ronnie Luma, Theatre Arts and Production Instructor and Music Director of the show, the three seniors, namely: Al Jehannce Casuyac, Judahnissi Calabroso and this writer were tasked with the program conceptualization, hosting, video editing and the voice over for the commercials and advertisements of the event. It was indeed a great experience for us. It was a big show and we didnt have enough experience to handle an event as grand as the finale of the Battle of the Champs, but with the guidance of our professor we were able to make it. And we didnt simply make it, we made it excellently, Casuyac quipped in an interview. Mr. Luma also extended his warmest thanks and appreciation for all the support that led to the great success of the event. I am grateful to the School Administrator, Dr. Nelly Q. Canada and the Mass Comm Program Head, Ms. Maribel Lanticse for their approval and suggestions; to Sonshine Radio Cebu for the trust that we could mount it despite the lack of manpower; and to the CEO, Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy for without his support, I and the students would never be able to contribute to the success of the program, Mr. Luma wittingly said after the event. He added that as an instructor, theres nothing more important than knowing that his students have learned from him and that this knowledge has already become a part of them. Meanwhile, Ms. Lanticse also commended the students and Mr. Luma for taking part in the annual event which has become an avenue for the Theatre Arts learners to explore and learn. We are always open to activities like this because we believe that learning is not just confined in the four

corners of the room. And it is our goal in the Mass Communication Department to go beyond classroom learning because that will allow our students to put their theoretical knowledge into practice, Miss Lanticse said. Aside from the big show, the students also enjoyed the sights and sounds of the wonderful City of Cebu. The event is hoped to give inspiration to all future learners of Theatre Arts and Production in the Jose Maria College.

Sining pambansa thus aspires to bring the Filipino films back to the Filipino by conducting seminars and workshops. Globally acclaimed photographers, playwrights and cinematographers converged in Davao City to carve up ideas vis--vis scriptwriting, filmmaking, cinematography and photography. The event was aimed at providing new insights on the preservation and expansion of the Filipino culture and art; integrating the value of Philippine local ethnicity; and inaugurating a societal consciousness through instilling a sense of artistic pride towards a nationalized identity. This is part of the Film Development Council of the Philippines or FDCPs campaign to revitalize the Philippine Film Industry. To support the initiative, the Mass Communication students of JMC along with some representatives from Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI) learned from the industrys great minds during the week-long series of seminars. The endeavor of revitalizing the inventive production amongst the young Filipino filmmakers was made possible through the joint efforts of the City Government headed by Mayor Inday Sara Duterte, Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. and the FDCP. FDCP is an organization under the office of the President of the Philippines mandated to maintain and uphold the amplification and development of the Philippine movie industry.

MC 101 (Introduction to Mass Communication) and MC 106 (Broadcasting Principles and Practices) classes joined efforts to initiate a media tour in Davao City, Philippines on January 30, 2012. The students visited some of the citys highly acclaimed AM and FM stations, and TV networks such as GMA 5 and Sonshine Media Network International. AT SMNI, the media hopefuls showed off their skills as they took turns delivering the headline news stories and operating the television cameras to test their knowledge of the theories they have learned from both courses. by: Raizah Monique de Leon

The statement, If it doesnt sell, it isnt creative, authored and popularized by businessman David Ogilvy, has long been the paradigm that shaped the advertising world and certainly the concept that beguiled JMC Adverts to be unique, innovative and distinctively first class. To sell is to be creative; to be creative is to be genuinely imaginative. Primera Classy undoubtedly lived up to its tagline, Distinctively First Class, when it bested other competing advertising agencies in the 2011 Intercollegiate Advertising Congress held at Holy Cross Davao College on October 28.

Print Ad, Best Radio Advocacy Plug, Best Profile Presenter, Best Logo Design and the most coveted Best Advertising Company award. This years competition was entitled AVANT 2011 with the theme, Sailing on with a Compass of Truth and Values. Other competing agencies were Limelight Unlimited- Centre of Attention, Magnitude Ads, Inc.- Measure of Intensity, Exosphere, Inc. -Creating Layers of Advantage, and IdeasThe Portal to New Media. Judged by media professionals, JMCs Primera Classy soared to supremacy by majority decision. With the Department of Trade and Industry as partner agency, JMC Adverts produced a radio

advocacy plug about holiday decor safety tips. Their TV Ad promoted Davao as a City of bloom in partnership with the Davao Bonsai Society, while its Print Ad projected JMC as in institution that focuses not only on quality education but on the very important role of reaching out to those in need in the community. Presenters from JMC were Al Jehanne Casuyac, Jeremias Pancho, Jerby Ann Rose Oquias, Genessa Solacito and Claire Logan. We are so proud that we brought home five out of the eight major awards. Thats a lot! Competing with other creative minds is really very challenging. And JMC made it, Solacito said in an interview.
