Introduction
Welcome to the Golf Guide to Cornwall 2012, within this annual publication you will find information on just some of Cornwalls most prestigious and challenging Golf Clubs. Within 2012 a year filled with tournaments, county matches, charity days and much more... Golf within the region has never been better. Cornwall is home to some of the most challenging and picturesque courses in the world. Bathed in heritage and tradition the courses can also test a players ability to navigate sudden gusts as well as tricky greens and not forgetting some of the magnificent cliff drops. Golfers come from far and wide to play the courses that still manage to dazzle and confuse even the most accomplished of professionals. The courses in Cornwall are very different to others in the UK, no matter how many times you play a particular shot it will never turn out the same. Within recent years a few of the Clubs have undergone some changes, with new courses being built and old ones being changed which has led to Cornwall being one of the places that is on every golfers must play destinations. Club houses in the county are in some cases a thing of beauty, combining the architecture with the backdrops of coast, cliffs, sand and waves gives an awe inspiring view that can take your breath away.

Whitsand Bay Hotel, Golf & Country Club

Set above the rugged Cornish coastline is the magnificent country house that is the Whitsand Bay Hotel, Golf and Country Club. Situated at Portwrinkle the course has arguably the most awe inspiring coastal views in the West Country. The course was built by Fernie of Troon in 1905 and even to this day, with all the modern technology of the latest golf clubs and balls, the course record of 62 still held by the former Open Champion Max Faulkner which was set in 1947. You get spectacular coastal views from virtually every inch of this golfing heaven, playing along the cliff tops and looking down to the golden beach below thus making the Whitsand Bay Hotel, Golf & Country Club a picture perfect location for all golfers no matter their handicap.

Its a wonderful course in a magnificant setting

The Championship Course (est 1925)

Designed by Harry Colt, The Championship Course ranks as one of the top links golf courses in the British Isles. Recent highlights include hosting 2008 Brabazon Trophy and The McGregor Trophy (2012). Like so many Colt courses, including Augusta National, Pine Valley, Sunningdale, Royal Portrush and Muirfield, Trevose guarantees a unique golfing experience...twelve months of the year.

The Headland Course

Opened in 1993 by Peter Alliss, the nine hole Headland Course provides a good test of golf for all levels. Whether youre an experienced golfer looking to fine tune your game, less experienced (intermediate level) but looking to improve your skills or simply looking for a course to try out some new tips picked up from the Professional then this course is for you!

The Short Course

Set in and around the ruins of Chapel of St Constantine (dating back to C15) it provides an excellent test of golf for beginners and juniors, who are not quite sure of themselves, or the seasoned golfers wanting to brush up on their short game.

Despite the tough climate, the right properties are still selling
By working with our clients to price property realistically, at a value driven by the market rather than by flattery to win your business, we have continued to generate sales. In fact, at Savills in Truro we reported our best winter period for sales, since opening in 2006. While we have sold properties from under 250,000 to over 5 million, the average price of properties we have sold over the last three years in Devon and Cornwall is 973,551. In the third quarter of 2011, the average sale price of properties sold by Savills across the region was 97.4% of the asking price. And this speaks volumes about our pricing strategy. Todays buyers are buying a property in the knowledge that it may be worth the same or less next year, and so they are understandably very focused on value for money. This reflects the general sentiment throughout the UK economy. But if the guide price is right, then there is no shortage of buyers. In fact we have seen competitive bidding over the guide price on a number of our recent sales, with one being concluded some 50% above the original guide price!

We handle a variety of properties from the listed manor house to the one off contemporary designs. Its still a very tough market, but the right property, in the right location at the right price has sold and will continue to sell. Selling a property in this climate requires a deal more than good fortune. Experience, sound advice and an international network of agents is a good place to start. Savills has been selling properties in the West Country since 2001 with a dedicated team that can testify to the desirability of the area, having experienced it first hand. Savills has a network of over 200 offices across the world and for those potential buyers that we cant reach face to face, the Savills website provides a shop window for our properties to property searches across the globe; recent figures show that Savills.co.uk is the most visited UK national estate agency website*. To discuss selling a property in Cornwall, please telephone 01872 243200 and ask for Martyn Rohrs.

This time last year we were looking ahead to the summer of 2011 with a mixture of cautious optimism and nervous anticipation. It seemed that not a day went by in 2011 without bad news for the UK economy, but from a local perspective, Im pleased to report that the winter months of 2011/12 werent all doom and gloom.

No one is sure when the CCPG Alliance was formed however there are records in the Cornish Guardian Office that the Alliance played a match at St Austell Golf Club back in the early 1920s! The Alliance was formed when a Cornish Professional was given permission to invite a few of his professional colleagues to his club to enjoy a round of golf as a token of appreciation. It has grown over the years to its present format of 16 matches each season culminating in the Alliance Championships with a membership in excess of 150.

Cornwall Ladies Golf Association

The Cornwall Ladies Golf Championship was formed in 1896 when members of Royal Cornwall, Bude and Falmouth Golf Clubs raised funds to buy a Challenge Cup. The sum of 12.11.0 was collected and a solid silver Bowl with Cornish Arms engraved was bought as the Championship Cup to be played for annually. Together with Yorkshire the Cornish Championship is the oldest in the Country It was not until 1930 that The Cornwall Ladies County Golf Association came into being, when it was decided to amalgamate the County Club with the already existing Cornwall Ladies Golf Union. From then on County matches were arranged between Somerset, Devon and Dorset. Spring and Autumn Meetings were started together with other County Competitions. Except during the World Wars the Championship has been held every year and is a popular start to the season. Qualifying is over 36 holes with a maximum of 64 players the 1st 16 gross scores enter the match-play stages. Undoubtedly its continued success has been due to the Western Morning News Cup which is awarded to the Club returning the best 4 gross scores and encourages club golfers to participate. This year the Championship is at West Cornnwall where Sarah-Jane Boyd (Truro) defends her title.

St Enodoc Golf Club

St Enodoc Golf Club on the North Cornwall coast overlooks the Camel Estuary, with Padstow on the far side, and to the North out across the Atlantic. The location on the high sand dunes is ideal for golf combined with stunning sea views. The club is situated in one of the driest parishes in Cornwall and being on sand is ideal for golf twelve months of the year; even in the depths of winter frost is a rarity thanks to the warm Gulf Stream climate. The area is renowned as a holiday resort and with the advent of the motorway network and the upgrading of the A30 is only about 4 hours drive from London. St Enodoc has two courses; the Church course is the James Braid designed Championship course which in September 2005 the club hosted the English County Finals and the shorter Holywell course which is an ideal course for those wanting slightly less of a challenge.

34

no two holes are the same

St Enodoc has one of the finest links golf courses in the South West of England with everything you would expect from a James Braid design; undulating fairways, firm greens, some blind shots and all with the added bonus of some of the greatest sea and estuary views on any course in the world. With its hilly terrain no two holes are the same; it may not be long by todays standards but it is tight with punishing rough and so requires courage and accuracy to cope with some of the problems posed. Any visitor who plays to their handicap here can leave feeling that they have done really well. At 6547 yards it is not long by todays standards yet strangely the new course record is 65, only 4 under par so it is far from a push over. It is often said that many links courses are easy if there is no wind - even St. Andrews - but somehow that really does not apply to St Enodoc. Over the years the club has hosted many top amateur events; including the English Ladies Amateur Championships in 1993 and 2002 and the English Counties Championship in 1989 and 2005. 35

Targeted Marketing for Golf Clubs in Cornwall

Many Golf Clubs are seeing their memberships dwindle in recent years and participation in Golf is consistently falling across the country. However, on Sunday 25th March, St Austell Golf Club signed up 16 new members at their Open Day and expects more follow-up interest in the coming weeks. This was primarily the result of a targeted marketing campaign being piloted in conjunction with the Cornwall Sports Partnership and the Cornwall Golf Partnership. The Cornwall Sports Partnership is encouraging Sports Clubs to adopt a more sophisticated and business like approach to their sustainability ultimately demonstrating that a little strategic thinking and investment in evidence-based techniques can result in serious Returns on Investment. Jake Leat, of the Cornwall Sports Partnership said that he was extremely excited to see the initial evidence from St Austell. This could have a phenomenal impact on Clubs seeking to re-energise their memberships and increase wider Club benefits such as lessons, pro shop, bar and restaurant takings.
