Classification of essential oil Each Essential oil contains anywhere from 100 300 different molecular components, chemically

y classed as alcohols, terpenes, ketones, phenols, esters, hydrocarbon, aldehydes and so on. Chemical Classification: Hydrocarbon contains only carbon and hydrogen atoms such as Citrus and pine. Alcohol contains a hydroxyl group (OH) attached to the terpene structure like Coriander, tea tree and peppermint. Aldehyde contains terpenoids with a carbonyl group (C=O) and hydrogen bonded to a carbon such as Citronella, lemon balm and lemon myrtle. Cyclic aldehydes contains aldehyde group attached to a benzene ring like Cinnamon, bitter almond and cumin. Ketone contains a carbonyl group bonded to two carbon atoms like Pennyroyal, thuja, sage and Eucalyptus radiata. Phenol contains hydroxyl group attached to a benzene ring like Thyme and oregano. Phenolic ether contains an O between C and benzene ring. Oxide has an O bridging 2 or more carbons like Eucalyptus, wormseed and cajeput. Ester is the condensation product of acid and alcohol like Lavender, wintergreen and clary sage. Phenylpropanes such as Aniseed, clove, tarragon and myrtle leaf acts as carminative and anaesthetic; Sesquiterpenes like German chamomile and yarrow acts as anti-inflammatory and antiviral; Sesquiterpene lactones such as Elecampane and arnica act as mucolytic and immune stimulating. Essential Oils can also be classified based on aroma. The classification of oils is floral, earthy, Citrus, Woodsy, Herbaceous, Minty, Medicinal/Camphorous, Oriental and spicy. Floral aroma for examples are lavender , Neroli and Jasmine; earthy such as Oakmoss, Vetiver and Patchouli; citrus aroma can be orange, lemon and lime; woodsy can be pine , cedarwood while herbaceous can be Marjoram, Rosemary and Basil. Peppermint and Spearmint have minty aroma; Medicinal or Camphorous can be Eucalyptus, Cajuput and Tea Tree; oriental aroma can be ginger and Patchouli while the last spicy aroma for examples are Nutmeg, clove and Cinnamon. Using the analogy of a musical scale, oils that evaporate the quickest, usually within 1-2 hours, are called top notes. Oils that evaporate with 2-4 hours are considered middle notes. Oils that take the longest time to evaporate are referred to as base notes. Some base notes can take several days to evaporate! The essential oil can be classified into top note, middle note and base notes. For examples of top note are Aniseed, Basil, Bay Laurel, Bergamot, Bergamot, Mint, Citronella, Eucalyptus, Galbanum,Grapefruit, Lavender, Lavendin, Lemon and Lemongrass. Middle Note for examples are, bay, Bois-de-rose, Cajuput, Carrot Seed, German Chamomile, Roman Chamomile,Cinnamon and Blossom. Base Note for such as Angelica Balsam (Peru), Cedarwood, Frankincense, Ginger,Helichrysum, Myrrh, Oakmoss, Olibanum, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Vanilla Vetiver.
