How to use CIVIL 3D to create pipeline planimetry and profile:

Civil 3d is a program used for civil work, but we use some of its features to draw pipelines.

The concept of making pipeline planimetry and profile is as follows:

Use the point from the route survey.

Create surface containing the line drawn and use it to determine the levels.

Create alignment passing the same pipeline route.

Create the profile by the intersecting point between the surface and the alignment.

Program interface:

You should start new file with File ‐‐ >New and choose the _AutoCAD Civil3D (Metric) NCS Extended. To open Tool space : General‐‐‐ >Tool Space

Creating Points:Two main methods to create point 1 st from the pipeline survey (text file) 2 nd manually 1 st From pipeline survey file:

The file will be in the form of Easting, Northing and level (Hard copy) and you will have to put it into a proper form (Soft Copy).

How to make input file:

Then:

In the Civil 3d:

Then:

Space delimited and comma delimited is the method the each column is spaced from the next one.

Point Group is used to group some points to have the same customization or editing.

In this stage the points are created and to see it you should zoom ‐‐ >extended.

Manual point creating will be discussed later.

Steps before creating surface :

1To connect the points to make the line type 3dpoly then type 'PN then you should enter the point which the program has to connect. If you have 15 points type 115.

2As the surface should be created on the area not on a line, we will make area parallel to the line and create the surface on it. By stepped offset icon‐‐ >select the offset distance ‐‐ >select the side ‐‐ >and the elevation difference is zero.

Creating Surface:

Then select the three lines.

Note:

You will not need these three lines again, so it is recommended to put them into a new layer and close it.

Creating alignment:

Before creating the alignment you should make line passing the pipeline.

To create line passing through the pipeline type PL then 'PN then the number of points as previous in the poly line

Then

Then you select the line. Note (Very Important):

When you select the line you should select it from the start

not the end because it will reverse the direction.

To set the labels on the Alignment ( Important on this stage)

Creating Profile:

At this stage we created a planimetry to the pipeline and we are going to produce the profile of the line.

Profile : it is a schematic drawing represent the heights of the pipeline every fixed length.

It is important to check the labels chapter on how to make bands on this stage.

Creating sheets:

Creating sheets will be done in two steps and each step has its customization and data input. 1 st we will create view frames which determine the size of each sheet. 2 nd we will produce sheets from the frames and the number of sheets is equal to frames.

To create view frames:

The next step is very important and you must make sure that you select the predefined band.

Then:

We should edit every sheet to be produced and this editing will be as the following:

As the pipelines are either underground or aboveground, we should represent both the ground and the pipeline.

In the previous stage, we are going to draw the ground profile symmetrical to the pipeline profile which will be as the following:

And then:

The value entered is depend on depth of the pipeline underground (+ve) or support elevation ( ve).

Repeat these steps with every profile.

All sheets must have the border of PETROJET and to do so we will use the following steps:

Before this step you must copy PETROJET border from previous project with base point. (CTRL+SHFT+C) and select the base point indicated below.

You should delete the followings from the border, which are from the default border.

We have two remaining steps to finish the project:

1 st creating grids on the planimetry 2 nd creating bending angles on the profile

Before making these steps you should have the following files:C3DTOOLS & LOADFORMS

In the command line type "appload"

To make grades on the planimetry:

On the command line type "addgrid"

And then mark on the planimetry

Enter the grid spacing value ' depend on the size of the sheet'

To make the program calculate the Bend angle:

Type 'ABA' in the command line then select the planimetry and then select the profile

You will find the bend angles produced on the profile as the following:

And then you should move it into the produced sheet each on its place.

And the final form of the sheet will be as the following:

Label Edit & Customization

For the alignment:After this stage

We will edit labels as the followings:

Then:

To edit the profile labels:

Then

And

And

To make and edit the band set:

You will select the band and edit it as the following:

Each band detail consists of two main sections:

1 st Manual data : which is the data you inserted as band name, size, location, etc. 2 nd Automatic Data : The data that the program get from both the planimetry and profile and enter its value (depend on the band type) at every station.

To edit the manual data:

To edit the automatic data:

To create points manually:

Then:

Then:

Then enter the elevation of the point and the point will be created with the default style.
