Settlers of Catan Variant: The Islet of Catan (2-Players)

By: Jason Sallay (j.sallay@calgarygamer.com) Draft version: 1.0 (Nov 20, 2007) Feedback is more than welcome. Number of Players: 2 Game Length: 60 minuets Requirements: Settlers of Catan Recommended: Fishermen of Catan (also see Optional Rules) A. Setup Build the board and placed the number tiles as shown in the illustration. Place number tiles in brackets [#] on the fish hexes to replace the existing numbers. Players may not place either of their starting settlements on the Jungle hex. B. Special Rules The Basic Rules from the Settlers of Catan and Fishermen of Catan are used except where noted below.

Production Dice:
Use a single 8-sided dice instead of 2 x 6-sided dice for production.

Robber:
The robber starts off the game board. A roll of a 1 activates the robber. The robber may be placed on any hex. If placed on a fish tile, the Jungle tile or a resource tile, that tile does not generate anything when its number is rolled. If placed on a port, that port may not be used for trade. Any effect that would return the robber to the desert instead removes the robber from the board.

Jungle:
The centre tile is a Jungle Tile and uses a modified version the Jungle Rules originally created by Klaus Teuber located here: http://www.universityofcatan.com/scenarios/soc-v02.html. There is a printable Jungle hex located there (also reproduced below). The desert tile may be used as a proxy if required. During the game, players may explore the Jungle and make valuable discoveries. The discoveries will aid them in developing their communities. When an 8 is rolled on the production dice, each player with settlements or cities adjacent to the Jungle make discoveries! Like other land hexes, each settlement adjacent to the Jungle will receive one discovery when the Jungle number is rolled. Likewise, each city adjacent to the Jungle will receive two discoveries. Discoveries are not represented by cards as other resources are. Instead, they are represented by the Discovery Counters. Discovery Counters do not count against a player's hand limit of resources when a "1" is rolled on the production roll. Discovery Counters can not be stolen by the Robber, can not be claimed by a Monopoly, can not be earned through a Year of Plenty, and may not be used in any trades. Discovery Counters are used to aid the purchase of development cards. Each Discovery Counter can be used to replace any one of the three resources needed to purchase a card. Up to three Discovery Counters may be used on each card purchase. Any combination of Discovery Counters and the three normal resources may be used. For Example: a player may purchase a Development Card with one Ore and two Discovery Counters. Similarly, a Discovery Card could be purchased with one wool, one grain, and one discovery counter.

Trading:
The giving of gifts is a high tradition among the residents of the Islet of Catan especially when conducting a business deal. If the players conduct one or more trades with each other during a turn (and not just with the bank/port), at the end of that turn they may each draw one fish card from the fish stock. If the old boot is drawn in such a fashion, the player who drew it may draw again, after which the old boot is shuffled back into the fish stock. If there are not enough fish tiles for both players after a trade (for example when there are only two tiles left, and one of them is the boot), then neither player gains a fish tile.

C: Suggested Optional Rules:

The Volcano:
Substitute the Jungle Hex for the Volcano Hex: http://www.universityofcatan.com/scenarios/soc-v03.html

Balance of Power:
If the Longest Road or Largest Army card is tied, no-one gets the card.

Fishing Alternate:
Use this optional rule if you do not own Fishermen of Catan. Fish are generated just like any other raw material. They do not count against a player's hand limit of resources when a "1" is rolled on the production roll. Fish can not be stolen by the Robber or traded to the other player. They can be claimed by a Monopoly, earned through a Year of Plenty or traded. They may be traded at 4:1 for any other raw material (or 3:1 at a 3:1 port). Bonus fish for trading. Both players gain a single fish at the end of a turn if they traded with each other during that turn. D: Victory: 10 points are required to win. If using the Fishing Alternate rules, 11 points are required to win. Jungle Hex:
