GUITAR
EDDIE VAN HALEN
VALERIE BERTINELLI (81-07) Originally from the Netherlands, Eddie and Alex Van Halen came to California with their family. The brothers, trained in classical piano, began a hard rock band called Mammoth. After playing around Pasadena, they met David Lee Roth. The eventual Van Halen began using that name in 1974. Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli divorced in 2007. In her 2008 autobiography, Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time, she wrote, Our ghts about his drinking had taken a toll. Discussing and solving our problems used to bring us closer, but now it wore us out. JANIE LISZEWSKI (09-)
DRUMS
ALEX VAN HALEN
VALERI KENDALL (83-84) The famous story goes that when the Van Halen brothers were children, Alex originally played guitar and Eddie was the drummer. Alex surpassed Eddie in drums, and to get even, Eddie began practicing the guitar. KELLY VAN HALEN (84-96) In 1988, the band received a star on the Hard Rock Cafes Walk of Fame in front of the Chicago restaurant. STINE SCHYBERG (00-) In the bands current lineup, Wolfgang Van Halen is the only non-original member, but his father and uncle are the only two consistent members.
VOCALS
DAVID LEE ROTH
NEVER MARRIED In the early 1970s, Roth fronted a few bands in California, including the Red Ball Jets. The Red Ball Jets played some shows with Mammoth, whose members included the Van Halen brothers. In 1985, Roth released an EP, Crazy From the Heat, which featured a cover of The Beach Boys California Girls. When Roth left Van Halen, he released the full-length Eat Em and Smile. Roth returned to the band for a brief stint in 1996 after Hagar was ousted. Roth, too, was soon out of the band, saying, Eddie did it. I was an unwitting participant in this deception.
GARY CHERONE
Cherone had been lead singer of Extreme, who had a hit with More Than Words. When Cherone took over for Roth, Eddie Van Halen praised him as a normal guy, a guy whos in it for the music, like me, Mike and my brother. Cherone stayed with Van Halen for one album. The band went on hiatus until 2004, when Hagar returned for a reunion tour. In Hagars 2011 memoir, Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock, he said he left after the tour because of Eddies drinking.
SAMMY HAGAR
Though David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar never appeared in Van Halen together, they went on the road in 2002 for what was uno cially called the Sans Halen tour. BETSY BERARDI (68-94) KARI KARTE (95-) Hagar started his career as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the mid-70s hard rock band Montrose. By the mid-80s, when he took over for David Lee Roth, he had achieved more fame for his solo career than he had when in Montrose. Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony went on to be part of Chickenfoot, a rock supergroup that also features guitarist Joe Satriani and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.
BASS
MICHAEL ANTHONY
SUSAN HENDRY (81-) As the son of a trumpet player, Anthony played trumpet himself before ultimately picking up the bass. In the early 1970s, he played and sang in a trio called Snake. In March 2007, Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The only two people who showed up were former band members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony.
