Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

Words to know A monomial is an expression that is a number, variable or product of a number and variables. Examples of monomials: 3, 4x, 5xy, y2 A polynomial is a monomial or the sum or difference of monomials. Examples of polynomials: 2x + 4, x4 + 4x3 5x2, 400 You can add polynomials by combining like terms. Example 1 Simplify (8x2 + 6x + 10) + (5x2 4x + 9) Solution First group the like terms, then simplify. (8x2 + 6x + 10) + (5x2 4x + 9) = = (8x2 + 5x2) + (6x 4x) + (10 + 9) = 13x2 + 2x + 19 The answer is 13x2 + 2x + 19. Example 2 Simplify (4x3 + 9x 5) + (7x + 12) Solution First group the like terms, then simplify. (4x3 + 9x 5) + (7x + 12) = = 4x3 + (9x + 7x) + (5 + 12) = 4x3 + 16x + 7 The answer is 4x3 + 16x + 7. To subtract a polynomial, change the sign of each of its terms to its opposite, then add.

Example 3 Simplify (6x2 + 4x 4) (2x2 + 8x 10) Solution First change the sign of each of the terms of the polynomial being subtracted, then combine like terms. (6x2 + 4x 4) (2x2 + 8x 10) = 6x2 + 4x 4 + 2x2 8x + 10 = (6x2 + 2x2) + (4x 8x) + (4 + 10) = 8x2 4x + 6 The answer is 8x2 4x + 6. Example 4 Simplify (4x3 + 15x2 40x) (12x2 + 11x 50) Solution First change the sign of each of the terms of the polynomial being subtracted, then combine like terms. (4x3 + 15x2 40x) (12x2 + 11x 50) = 4x3 + 15x2 40x 12x2 11x + 50 = 4x3 + (15x2 12x2) + (40x 11x) + 50 = 4x3 + 3x2 51x + 50 The answer is 4x3 + 3x2 51x + 50. Practice Add the polynomials. 1. (4x2 + 4x + 1) + (4x + 20) 3. (5x3 6x + 10) + (x3 + 10x 9) 5. (8x2 + 4x + 1) + (5x2 + 4x + 16) 7. (12x3 8x2 7) + (6x3 + 9x2 x) 9. (9x2 7x + 55) + (3x + 8) 2. (7x2 + 9x 15) + (8x 8) 4. (3x2 + 3x 9) + (5x2 + 7x3 4) 6. (x2 + 5x + 9) + (x2 + 6x + 9) 8. (2x3 7x2 + 16) + (6x3 + 5x2 1) 10. (7x3 + 4x + 1) + (4x2 + 20x5)
