Barbara Thurmond of August, GA has been selected as the $10,000 grand prize winner of the 2001 Women of Wonder (WOW) contest. Sponsored by the Aunt Jemima Brand of Quaker Foods and Beverages in partnership with the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., a Woman of Wonder is an African-American woman between the ages of 25 and 54 who has made a significant impact in the lives of others. Nine first-prize winners received $1,000 each. Thurmond received her prize during a ceremony at the NCNW National Headquarters in Washington, D.C. last month. Nominated by her daughter, Aquanetta Betts, Ms. Thurmond was chosen from thousands of nominees by a national panel of judges for her tireless efforts to fight black-on-black crime and seek justice for crime victims and their families. Thurmond founded Blacks Against Crimes, Inc. (BAC) ten years ago and subsequently launched a "Stop the Killing" movement which identified the causes of black-on-black violence. Specifically, Ms. Thurmond used the media to raise awareness of the problem, organized a speakers bureau and became an advocate for victims' rights. Despite being confined to a wheelchair for the past seventeen years, Thurmond has served as BAC President since its inception, as well as on ten additional community boards without compensation. She is also the Director of "Think Bigger," a monthly program developed to reduce youth violence and drug abuse. "The ten-year partnership between the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. and the Aunt Jemima Brand of The Quaker Oats Company has helped us celebrate the positive influence of African-American women, not only on our communities, but on the world," said Dr. Dorothy I. Height, Chairperson and President Emerita. "Ms. Thurmond is a woman whose relentless fight for empowerment makes her a woman of wonder." "Barbara Thurmond's unselfish efforts to fight crime in her community and seek healing for its victims epitomizes the spirit of the Women of Wonder contest," said Pamela Jordan, spokesperson for Aunt Jemima. "She has touched many lives and is truly an inspiring community leader." First-prize winners for the Women of Wonder Awards contest are as follows: Zakiya Courtney of Milwaukee, WI; Adeen L. George of Goldsboro, NC; Alice Hinton of Tarboro, NC; Gail Knight of Phoenix, AZ; Gwendolyn Lawe of Dallas, TX; Mary Mazon of Capital Heights, MD; Mary Katherine McClinton of Radford, VA; Lorraine Perry of Lewisville, TX. The National Council of Negro Women, Inc., founded in 1935 by legendary educator and human rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune, is a national non-profit organization dedicated to helping AfricanAmerican women improve the quality of life for themselves, their families and their communities.
