Hypothesis: The hypothesis of our experiment is that temperature extremes (0 degrees C and 100 degrees C) will reduce magnetic

strength, when compared to magnetic strength at room temperature (about 72 degrees Fahrenheit). Materials: 5 magnets 40 steel washers Flat tray Stove Metallic pan Aluminum thermometer Small cooler with ice

Procedure: We counted out 40 steel washers and put them into a small glass. The day before the first magnet is placed in the freezer (0 degrees C). We measure the right temperature. After, slowly pull the magnet straight up and count the washers that are attracted to it. The second magnet is cooled (20 degrees C) Again we measure the right temperature. We repeat step 4 pulling the magnet straight up and counting the washers attracted.

The third magnet is at room temperature (40 degress C) We measure the temperature. Pull this magnet straight and again we count the washers. The fourth magnet is slighted heated (75 degress C) We measure again the temperature. And after pulling the magnet straight we count the washers attracted. The last magnet is heated for a little longer (100 degress C) Measure the temperature. For the last time, we pull the magnet straight and we count the washers.

Results: The hottest magnet picked up all the 40 steel washers. The fourth magnet picked up 33 steel washers. And the one with low temperature picked up just 22 steel washers. That is about 20% less than the unchanged magnet and almost two times less than the hot magnet.

Conclusions: The strongest magnet was the hottest of the three magnets concluding that temperature does affect the strength of magnets. We found that freezing or heating magnets can increase and reduce the strength of the magnet by about 10 to 20%. Heating the magnet decreased the magnets strength the most because the hot magnet picked up almost two times less than the frozen magnet. When we did the experiment we found out that we had to change some things on the procedure. We removed some materials and added the ones we found we needed. Doing the experiment twice we found the right information that was needed.

It was observed that as the magnets temperature was increased, the number of washers picked up by the magnets is reduced. The hypothesis that increasing the temperature of a magnet will reduce its strength is proven to be true.

Magnetism and magnets have found many uses in products that we use daily. The once popular cassette and video tape were made using a reel of magnetic tape. Our ATM cards and credit cards have a magnetic strip which contains information. Magnetism is also used in transformers, motors, speakers, microphones and many more devices. Hospitals use Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to identify problems in patients, without having to perform surgery.
