hat's new in the ESP at this beginning of the year 2003? Essentially two points: one concerns the passe, the other the relations between the Schools of the Europe Coordination.

It had become necessary to study the unfolding of the experience of the passe that had taken place in the ESP and to evaluate it, taking into account the changes that had happened there and the new needs that were making themselves felt. The facts were, as they often are, ahead of the institutional solutions available. The conclusion of this thought, led by the President of the ESP with the ex-General Delegate and the Secretary of the passe of the WAP, allowed a new rule for the passe in the ESP to be put in place which was unanimously ratified by the Council of the WAP on the 25th and 26th of January, 2003. Thus a Spanish-speaking cartel has since been functioning, starting its work immediately. The setting up of the WAP-Europe Coordination at the Brussels conference in July 2002, under the Presidency of the new General Delegate of the WAP, Graciela Brodsky, and comprising the Presidents of the different Schools in Europe, has already had effects. The ESP and the ECF are organising two events together. The first at Nice associates the ECF and the SLP at a conference entitled: " Gays in analysis ". This topic of work is inscribed along the lines of a clinic of contemporary life, taking up the need for psychoanalysis to formalise new versions of the symptom within the master discourse. It is therefore a question of an advance in the clinic in a period of segregation and globalisation. This has been our concern since May 2002 in Milan, as the last issue of Mental testifies (N11). There we find the first indication in the rubric " Flash points " of this issue of Herms with the beginning of Jacques-Alain Miller text: "Intuitions milanaises " (Milanese intuitions). In October 2003, it will be the ECF and the ELP that will collaborate for an organisation of the Autumn Journes in Paris devoted to the " short session. This

theme is inscribed in the continuity of the work of the ELP, which, in this month of February is holding a conversation on " The principles of analytic treatment ". The attention focused on the spirit of the analytic experience is to be articulated with our decided choice for applied psychoanalysis and the whirlwind of work that accompanies it. This whirlwind will find a punctuation in Europe at the PIPOL meeting in Paris in June 2003. The first the Congress of the Foundation of the NLS will take place in Bruges, treating the two main points concerning applied psychoanalysis: its indications and its results. Finally, we will announce a surprise in the next issue of Herms.

Flash point
" Not without a certain improvisation, I had some thoughts in Milan on what concerns us in psychoanalysis, and I do not want to let this moment pass. I am therefore going to share with you my Milanese intuitions and begin to develop them. They concern the relations between the unconscious and the political. I am taking as a point of departure a proposal by Lacan taken from his Seminar " The logic of the fantasy ", that I came across just before I left in a sort of psychopathology of political life which has just appeared here. The proposal is this: " I am not saying " the political is the unconscious " but quite simply " the unconscious is the political "... Now, the agalma of this saying is a formula, " the unconscious is the political ", and one can at least note that it is a formula that is itself about the competence of a psychoanalyst, while the other, which proposes a definition of the political, is more risky when it is a psychoanalyst who enunciates it and for whom defining the political is not his business. This is indeed why Lacan says " I am not saying [.], but quite simply [.] ". This is how I summarise the theme that the Italian colleagues proposed to treat: are psychoanalysts in the City? This is open to discussion. In any case, psychoanalysis itself is in the political. That allowed me to find a thread in Milan to put forward the theme to be treated. Now I shall take up the continuation of my thoughts, in the order in which they came to me there. "

Agenda
Conference of the ECF and the SLP in Nice on March 22nd and 23rd 2003, "Gays in analysis"
Do " gays " come to analysis? The spokesmen of these modern communities, centred on a mode of enjoyment, would willingly proclaim that psychoanalysis does not concern them, that they have emancipated themselves from the subjections proper to sexuality according to Freud, always inclined to cross the practices of which they make themselves the emblem with perversion. Is there a sexuality that is not perverse, homo or heterosexual? And above all, in putting the subject to work on his relation to jouissance, as can be deduced from Lacan's teaching beyond the Oedipus, how does it put in cause no matter what

identity of jouissance, if not by way of the symptom? This can only be verified case by case from those who address themselves to psychoanalysis to speak, sometimes, among other things, about their homosexuality. It is not unusual. And the gay communitarism is part of what the symptom can frame as far as it is concerned. It is an element of the civilisation, of what Freud called its malaise and Lacan its symptom: not malformations in need of repair, but foundations without which nothing is treatable. So, gays in analysis, what do we get by foregrounding the question?
