All of Us - #542 Fr. Larry

Just the Beginning Congratulations to our 8th grade students who graduate this week from our Religious Education program. We mark out the time they have spent learning about our Catholic faith. The rich history, traditions and beliefs of our Church have the ability to shape and guide our lives. This can be a great foundation for teenagers as they venture into the shaky and often uncertain waters of high school. We are grateful to our dedicated catechists who have worked closely with our students every week. May the seeds of faith that have been planted in their hearts continue to grow in the years to come. There are plenty of opportunities for adults to continue learning about their Catholic faith. Learning should not stop when you walk out of the 8th grade classroom on the last day of school. The easiest way to do this is to simply go on the internet and search for books and materials from some of the major Catholic publishing companies. I rely on resources from such places like St. Anthony Messenger Press, Ligouri Publications and Paulist Press. They all have a wide variety of reading material and videos, from the lives of the saints, to explanations of the sacraments. Maybe as you draw up your wish list for what books you want to read over the summer, there might be one for you to check out about Catholicism. New to St. Cyril's This Sunday, our Welcoming Committee will be hosting a simple luncheon for our newly registered parishioners. It will take place at 11:30 AM in Fr. Sivori Hall. If you are new to the parish, please come across the street for lunch. It is a great opportunity for me to meet and greet those who are new to our parish family. God's Mercy All are invited to our bilingual Divine Mercy prayer service at 2:30 PM this Sunday. Our Church is blessed to have saints like Sister Faustina who lived good and holy lives. This is no easy task. They listened carefully to God and were not afraid to respond to ways that God was calling them to love, pray and serve one another in the name of Jesus Christ. Need Help There is an area of parish life where we are in real

need of volunteers to help minister. Maybe this is your calling? We are in need of Wedding Sacristans. At St. Cyril's, we perform over 40 weddings in a given year. Now that Lent has passed, we move so to speak into the "wedding season." The majority of our weddings occur on Saturday afternoons. There are a few weddings that get booked on a Friday. As a parish, we make a special effort to make the wedding not just a nice day for the bride and groom, but more importantly a sacred and positive experience for them and their family. Getting married in a Catholic church is drastically different than getting married before a Justice of the Peace who performs quick and easy civic ceremonies at the court house. Our Catholic rituals, songs and prayers are filled with beauty, grace and meaning that convey the religious significance of the sacrament. On the day of the wedding, Sacristans welcome those who are visiting our parish. They assist and direct the bridal party and those involved in the liturgy. They help to set up for the wedding. They assist the florist and photographer in their roles. Wedding Sacristans will even handle the wedding rehearsal that typically occurs on the day before the wedding. In short, by their organization and coordination, they help to make things go smoothly and peacefully for everyone on a very nervous and stressfilled day. The commitment is not a huge one. You would be assigned about a handful of weddings. Training and assistance will be provided. You would begin helping with someone who has experience as a Wedding Sacristan. One of the rewards of this ministry is getting to know the bride and groom and their family and having a hand in helping them on one of the most important days of their lives. Please call the rectory if you are interested in this ministry. It is truly a joyful ministry. Feeding the Hungry Thank you to all who responded to our various appeals during Lent to help the poor. A few weeks ago I noticed lots of grocery bags being delivered into church for our Helping Hands program. Also, we are grateful for those who participated in the Operation Rice Bowl program that helps to bring relief to those who hunger throughout the world. This Is Only a Test On Monday, the painter will begin to test the colors and design for the interior restoration of our church. A section of the wall and ceiling will be painted on the west

side of church, directly in the middle. This is all in preparation for when our church will be completely painted during the upcoming summer months starting this June. As you know, it is one thing to see a color sample on a piece of paper, but it is another thing to actually see paint freshly rolled on an 80 year old plaster wall. Paint looks different once it dries. Also, other factors have to be taken into consideration during an initial paint test. For example, close attention has to be given as to how the colors look during the day, and how do they look at night when there is only limited lighting. There can be a noticeable contrast between the two. The colors can change depending on different times of the day and the amount of sunlight that is able to come through the stained glass windows. I am sure things will be "tweaked" as we carefully go through the process to make sure the final product looks perfect.

Welcome to SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish

The Parish Staff of St. Cyrils welcomes all to our historic parish that has carried on the mission of Jesus since 1884.

No experience is necessary just an openness to grow in friendships. SPRED is not instructional but helping us to grow in a relationship with God and with one another.

Volunteering to serve the needs of the Parish and the Parish School are what keeps us thriving. For more than 125 years, SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish School has been a vital ministry for our parish. Please help us to continue to grow by being a part of one of these BSJ committees. If time is a concern, please still consider us. We will be a better organization with whatever amount of time you are able to give. Please call or stop by the school office or rectory for more information or email Randy Zezulka, rzezulka@gmail.com. We look forward to hearing from you. Mrs. Tkachuk, Principal

God Has Blessed Us Easter Giving

As we celebrate Easter, we are aware of all that our Risen Lord gives to us. SS. Cyril & Methodius continues to carry on the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ today. Our parish is blessed by many generous parishioners, who share their time, talents and treasures in support of the life of our parish. We remain a vibrant parish because of these sacrifices and charitable giving. As we enter the fourth quarter of our fiscal year, our Easter collection remains an important part of the operating budget. Charitable giving, besides cash, may also include gifts of shares of stocks, mutual funds or bonds. In giving appreciated assets to your parish, you could avoid paying any capital gains tax on the items and your contribution may be tax-deductible. The church is allowed to sell the assets, and receive the benefits of the appreciated value without being taxed. Visit www.parishgift.org for more information or call the rectory at (630) 257-2776. Thank you for your generosity. May God bless you and your family.

Divine Mercy Sunday

During the Mass of canonization of St. Faustina on April 30, 2000, the year of the Great Jubilee, Pope John Paul II proclaimed: "It is important then that we accept the whole message that comes to us from the word of God on this Second Sunday of Easter, which from now on throughout the Church, will be called Divine Mercy Sunday." The readings on that Sunday are always about mercy, trust and the forgiveness of sins.
