An induction motor has a short circuit current equal to 6-times the full load current at normal voltage. It has a slip of 5 percent on full load. Calculate the starting torque in terms of full load torque if started by: (a) A star-Delta starter (b) An Auto-Transformer with 60 percent tapping. Ignore the magnetizing current. [16] 2. (a) What are the various types of induction furnace? Make a neat sketch and describe one of them. (b) 100kg of tin is to be melt during an hour is a melting furnace. Determine the suitable rating of the furnace, if melting temperature of tin is 235 0 C. Specic heat = 0.055, latent heat = 13.3 Kcal 1 kg. Take initial temperature of the metal as 35 0 C. [6+10] 3. (a) What are the various methods of welding? (b) What are the advantages of coated electrodes in welding process? [16]

4. A incandescent lament lamp is suspended 2 m above the such working plane. The lamp and the reector are such that the illumination below the horizontal is 500 candle. Determine its maximum speed assuming trapezoidal Speed-Time curve, if the distance between the stops is 2.5 km, acceleration 1.8 kmphps and retardation 3kmphps. [16] 8. (a) Explain with the help of quadrantal diagram the speed-torque characteristics of an induction motor. (b) Discuss the various methods of controlling the speed of 3-Phase induction motors. [6+10] 2. (a) What is the method by which pinch eect in direct core type of induction furnace has been eliminated? (b) It is desired to employ an induction furnace for melting 1 to nne of zinc at each charge, the time taken for each melt, being about 1 hour. What must be approximate kw input to the furnace assuming it to have an eciency of 65%? Specic heat of zinc =300 J/kg-0 C, latent heat of fusion of zinc = 111.65 KJ/kg; Melting point 455 0 C. [6+10] 3. (a) Write short notes on electric welding. (b) Name and describe various resistance welding processes. [6+10]

4. Find the total saving in electrical load and percentage increase in illumination if instead of using twelve 150 watts lament lamps, we use twelve 80W uorescent tubes. It may be assumed that: (a) There is a choke loss of 25% of rated lamp wattage (b) Average luminuous eciency for each lamp is 15 lm/w and for each tube 40 lm/w (c) Coecient of utilization remains the same. 5. (a) Compare the merits and demerits of lament lamps and uorescent lamps. (b) A work shop measures 15m36m, 20 lamps of 500w each are used for lighting the workshop. The luminous eciency of lamp is 15 Lumens/watt. Determine the illumination on the working plane, if the depreciation factor is 0.7 and the coecient of utilization is 0.5. [6+10] 6. Discuss the application of rheostatic braking as applied to series and a.c induction motors with neat diagram. [16] 7. With the help of a complete Speed-Time curve, discuss how dierent parameters of this curve change with the type of train service. [16]

8. A 400 ton goods train is to be hauled by a locomotive on a gradient of 2% with an acceleration of 1 kmphps. Coecient of adhesion is 0.2, track resistance is 40N/Ton and eective rotating masses 10% of dead weight. Find the weight of the locomotive and number of axles if the axle load is not to be beyond 22 tonnes. [16]

(b) A lamp has a uniform candle power of 300 in all directions and is tted with a reector with direct 50% of the total emitted light uniformly on to a at circular disc of 20 m diameter placed 20 m vertically below the lamp. Calculate illumination: i. at the centre ii. at the edge of surface with and without reector. [8+8]

5. A drawing hall measuring 30m15m5m is to be provided with illumination of 100lux. Assuming coecient of utilization of 0.5 and depreciation factor of 0.8, determine the number of lamps required, their spacing, mounting height and total wattage. Luminous eciency of lamps is 16.67 lumens/watt for 300w. [16] 6. (a) Explain the Principle of dielectric heating and applications (b) The power required for dielectric heating of a slab of resin 150sq cm in area and 2 cm thick is 200 watts at a frequency of 30 MHZ. The material has relative permittivity of 5 and a p.f 0.05. Determine the voltage necessary and current owing through the material. If the voltage is limited to 600V. What will be the value of the frequency to obtain the same heating? [6+10] 3. (a) What is fundamental dierence between electric arc welding and resistance welding?
