1.0 SCOPE This method statement is covering the requirements of pickling and passivation of stainless of
welding joint for Riyadh PP11 Project at Saudi Arabia. 2.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS The contractor shall apply the most recent edition of the following applicable standard and code as a part of the specifications. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) ASTM A380: Standard Practice for Cleaning, Descaling, and Passivation of Stainless Steel Parts 3.0 SEQUENCE 1) Degreasing 2) Passivation Treatment 3) Water Rinsing 4) Drying 5) Protection 4.0 DISCRIPTION OF PASSIVATION 4.1 Degreasing a) Cleaning shall be done after fabrication, welding and heat treatment is completed. b) Scale produced as a result of heating and forming operation shall be removed by blasting with iron free girt (all oxide), aluminum grinder, stainless steel power brush, or chemical cleaning method approved by the Buyer. Residual grit shall be completely removed by blowing with clean, dry, oil-free air or steam. c) Solvent cleaning shall be used to remove oil, grease, or other soluble foreign matter. d) Any remaining greases, oil or foreign matters shall be removed by using aceton, alcohol or solvent. 4.2 Passivation Treatment 1) Acid pickling is carried out to remove residual contaminants and oxide firms, and to obtain a clear and uniform surface by means of acid solutions. 2) All scales and contaminants shall be removed by the pickling process. 4.3 Water Rinsing Wash pickling solution with fresh until the surface is free of acid solution. 4.4 Drying The water rinsed surface shall be dried in open air or with dry. 4.5 Protection Passivation and rinsed area for austenitic stainless steel shall be wrapped to ensure protection from further contamination. 5.0 INSPECTION 1) Visual inspection shall be carried out under a bright light, minimum 1,076 Lx.
2) Items cleaned in accordance with this procedure shall be free of paint, oil, grease, welding flux, slag, heat-treating and hot-forming scale, dirt, trace, metal and abrasive particles and chips, and other gross contamination. 3) Visual inspection shall be conducted with borescopes, mirrors, and other aids, as necessary, to properly examine inaccessible or difficult-to-see surfaces. 4) Inspection shall be performed by white paper test after all works have finished. 6.0 CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF PICKLING MATERIAL 1) Pickling & Passivation of Stainless steel Degreaser: HG-700 or COOLMIN K-100 or KS-100 or equivalent
