SECTION 02622 PLASTIC PIPE (PVC)

PART 1 GENERAL 1.1 A. DESCRIPTION OF WORK The extent of plastic piping (PVC) is shown on the approved design drawings. This specification section applies to underground utilities piping required for site work. For specifications applicable to plumbing and process piping work refer to Division 15 and Section-D4. Related Work: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 1.2 A. QUALITY ASSURANCE Source Quality Control (PVC Pipe): 1. PVC pipe shall be tested in accordance with SAS 14 and SAS 15. In addition, the following tests shall be carried out on samples from every batch of pipe for every 100 tons or for each batch less than 100 tons: Determination of resistance to internal hydrostatic pressure in accordance with SAS 15, Clause 3, (1000 hour test). The testing shall be performed at a temperature of plus 60C and at a stress level of 100 kp/cm2 in the pipe wall. Testing shall be performed on five pipe samples, sampled at random. Determination of impact resistance in accordance with SAS 15, Clause 4. Five tests shall be carried out on samples, selected at random. Determination of the Vicat softening point in accordance with ISO 2507.

References Standards: The latest editions on the following Standards shall apply: 1. (a) Saudi Arabian Standards (SAS): SAS 14, Pipe for potable water of unplasticized plastic (polyvinyl chloride). SAS 15, Methods of testing of pipe for potable water of unplasticized plastic (polyvinyl chloride). International Standards - International Organization for Standardization (ISO): ISO 3603, fittings for unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (UPVC) pressure pipes with elastic scaling ring type joints. DELIVERY, HANDLING, AND STORAGE All straight PVC pipe shall be stored on shelves under sunshade roofs in such a way that the pipe will not become distorted or exposed to sunlight. Fittings shall be stored under shade conditions preferably in boxes or sacks which allow a free passage of air. No piping shall be exposed to the direct sunlight for more than three (3) days during storage, transportation, handling and/or installation. The period of storage prior to installation shall be minimized and records shall be kept of the production date of the pipes. The pipes shall be stored in such a way that bell and spigot ends shall be arranged alternately so that pipes are evenly supported. Larger pipes shall be placed on the bottom if different sizes of pipes are stacked together.

F.

Pipe having been bent to a radius of less than 300 times the outer diameter per 6 meter length shall be rejected. Rubber gaskets shall be stored in an air-conditioned room preferably in boxes or sacks.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 A. GENERAL Proprietary names used for materials are intended to imply that products of the named Saudi manufacturers are required. Equivalent products of other manufacturers may only be used where local supply is not available. MATERIALS Requirements for Straight Pipe: 1. PVC pipe and jointing material shall comply with Saudi Arabian Standard SAS 14 and have a Vicat softening point and K-value of not less than plus 80 and 65C. PVC pressure pipe (potable water, fire water, process water and sanitary or industrial wastewater force mains) shall comply with Class 5 of SAS 14 (16 kp/cm2). PVC gravity pipe (sanitary sewer and industrial wastewater sewer) shall comply with class 3 of SAS 14 (6 kg/ cm2). PVC pipe sizes up to 63 mm nominal diameter shall be jointed with PVC pipe cement. Pipes larger than 63 mm diameter shall be flexibly jointed with rubber ring joints. Rubber joint rings are specified in Section 02610.

Requirements for Fittings: For PVC fittings, refer to Section 02610.

PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 A. INSTALLATION Excavation, backfill, compaction and general installation requirements are specified in Section 02200. Continuous adequate support shall be provided, along the whole pipe to prevent sagging and bending. The pipe shall be securely placed into thrust blocking, leaving no space for pipe movement.

C.

Proper insertion of spigot ends into the bell ends of the pipe is essential. Spigots shall be stop-marked and pushed into the bell housing only up to the mark to avoid over-insertion. No installation shall be done while water remains in the trench or when heavy sand storm is eminent. Pipe shall not be exposed to direct sunlight for periods longer than three (3) days and provisions shall be made for shading any pipe which is left in the open or uncovered in trenches. Piping shall not become excessively over-heated causing deformation or permanent damage to pipe. Bends in pipe may not be made at joints. Bends shall be made over the whole length of the pipe section. The radius of any bend be less than 3.5 times the outer diameter of the pipe shall not for pipe size 110 mm diameter and larger. Keep the use of numerous short "leftover" pipe segments to a minimum.
