SECTION 15310 INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM

1.1 A.

SCOPE This section covers the identification and application of instrument and instrument type DCS displays and hard copy printing identification letters, numbers, symbols, and details as applied to mechanical/process flow diagrams, P&ID drawings, sketches, lists, instrumentation and control diagrams (logic, loop and SAMA control drawings), equipment identification tags, and other documents. The instrument identification shall be used on all drawings, specification sheets, documents and DCS, BMS and DEHC software. Instrumentation & control (I&C) system identification shall follow the Instrument Society of America (ISA) Standard S5.1, Instrumentation Symbols and Identification (Latest edition), and ISA S5.4 for loop diagrams (Latest edition) which are the recommended practices of ISA and are in common usage in the process and power industries. Shared display system convention of ISA shall be followed, as applicable, for DCS, BMS and DEHC representation. ISA Standard S5.1 is supplemented with the unit number and system identification as defined below. INSTRUMENT IDENTIFICATION (TAG NO.) I&C components shall be identified by a unique alphanumeric symbol consisting of the parts listed below. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Unit and plant identification Function identification System identification Loop identification Suffix for similar instruments in same loop

B.

1.2 A.

B.

The sequence shall be as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Unit No. Plant code Function code (flow meter, totalizer-indicator, etc) System code (feedwater, etc.) Loop No. Suffix (for duplicate equipment in the same loop)
P.O. Number : 7200018725

C.

Unit and Plant Identification 1. The complete instrument identification number shall have as the first digit the unit number to which the instrument belongs. If a unit number is not applicable, the unit number space shall be left blank. Immediately following the unit number space shall come a single letter code indicating with which major multiple unit plant the particular instrument is associated with. The following letter designations shall be used: SMSteam turbine-generator units Miscellaneous (Tank farm, seawater cooling systems, switchyard, etc.) -Code for interfacing with units other than power and desalination project units

2.

When an instrument is common to more than one unit, it will be identified with the letter C. For example, CG-PI-FW108. The complete tag number, including the unit number where applicable, must be shown on all identification tags, nameplates, instrument lists, DCS databases, etc.

D.

Function Identification 1. The combination of letters used to identify the purpose and function of the instrument shall be in accordance with ISA Standard S5.1. A maximum of three letters can be used to describe the function of an instrument.

E.

System Identification 1. The system identification is a two-letter combination that designates the system in which the instrument is being used. System identification codes are listed in Table 1. This may be supplemented as required.

F.

Loop Identification 1. An instrument loop is a combination of one or more interconnected instruments arranged to measure and/or control a process variable. Instruments in the same loop will carry the same loop number. Identical instruments in the same loop will have a suffix number after the loop number. Each instrument loop will have a loop identification number following the two-letter system designation. The loop numbering starts at 001 for each system and can go as high as 999 for the same system. Suffix numbers, if necessary, follow the loop number. The I&C loop identification number will be applied as described below. All Instruments in the Same System

a.

One Loop Measuring a Single Process Variable (1) Every component in the instrument loop will have the same system and loop identification.

b.

Different Interconnected Loops Measuring More Than One Process Variable (1) Each of serial different interconnected loop will have its own loop identification number. The blowdown flow loop identification number is BC 519 and the blowdown temperature loop is BC 520. Loop No. BC 520 is used to compensate the flow measured in loop BC 519.

(2)

c.

Two Instruments Sensing Same Process Variable (1) When the same process variable is sensed by two identical instruments, whether from the same or different pipe taps, and the output of each instrument is used only for backup of the other, the loop identification number will be the same for all, each with different suffixes.

d.

Loop With Similar Components (1) Where two similar components are part of the same control loop, a suffix number shall be added to the loop designation. If there are two flow indicators, one in the control room and one on a local panel; the loop designation would be FIFW1211 for one indicator and FI-FW121-2 for the other. Multiple-point instruments with all points of the same general service shall have the points identified by suffix.

e.

Dual Element Instruments (1) Normally, only one element of a dual temperature element is used, with the unused element left as a spare. The dual element will receive an instrument loop number, with each of its elements tagged by added suffixes if both are used. For example, TE-CD456-1 and TE-CD456-2 are the two elements of the dual-temperature element in loop CD456. Although it is not recommended, it may occur that the spare element may have to be used later in a different loop. Under that circumstance, the spare element will be assigned a new, distinct loop number.

(2)

5.

Instruments in More Than One System a. Where two or more systems are involved in the developing of a measurement control function, the instruments of each system will be
P.O. Number : 7200018725

identified following its own system and loop number, and independent of the other systems of the same loop. The interface will be shown in the Instrumentation and Control Diagram (ICD). 6. Instruments for the ASME Turbine Acceptance Test a. All instrumentation that is to be used solely for the ASME Turbine Acceptance Test shall be assigned an instrument identification (tag) number in accordance with this document, with the exception of the loop identification part of the tag number. For this special instrumentation, the loop identification numbers will start at number 500. All other parts of the instrument identification system remain the same.

G.

Control Valves 1. Control valves are those having a specific flow pressure drop characteristic and may be modulating or on-off in operation. Each one of these valves is part of a uniquely identified loop and, as such, will have its own instrument identification symbol. In some instances, the valve and its controlling instrument have different system designations, as when the controlled variable and the valve are in different systems. Note: The letter "C" shall be added in the function designation of a control valve only if the controller in the loop is an integral part of the valve. If the controller is a discrete item, sometimes mounted on the valve for convenience, the "C" shall not be used to describe the functions of the valve. Motor operated valves assigned instrument tags will be assigned identification as defined on the general Notes and Legend Drawing of the mechanical/process flow diagrams and P&IDs.

2.

H.

Components to be Identified 1. General a. In general, all instruments that are a separate, identifiable piece of hardware must receive a tag number. These would include in-line instruments, local sensors, control stations, indicators (whether panel mounted or not), and final actuators. When instrumentation is purchased as part of a prepackaged control system, that instrumentation hardware furnished in cabinets shall also receive tag numbers per requirements of this specification. In this case, the cabinet is shown as a dotted box connected to all the peripheral equipment. Instrumentation functions performed in the DCS through software modules shall also receive tag numbers per requirements of this specification.

P.O. Number : 7200018725

2.

Alarms a. An alarm shall have an identification number designation. If there is more than one output from a device used for alarm, each output shall be differentiated by a suffix. A "Lo" outside the instrument balloon will indicate low and a "Hi" will indicate high alarm.

3.

Lights Lights supplied with switches for status indication (on, off, auto) are not tagged. Position lights (valve or damper open, and so forth) and others shall be tagged is not part of the switch itself. Lights in backlighted pushbuttons are not separately tagged.

4.

Motor Control Circuits a. Motor control circuits for pumps or fans shall be identified in accordance with the General Notes Legend Drawing of the mechanical/process flow diagrams and P&IDs .

5.

Instrumentation Equipment by Others a. Instrumentation equipment and systems designed and supplied as a package by others should be tagged by the Seller in accordance with the specified tagging system as closely as practicable.
