APPLICATION -EQUIPMENT General

6.1.1 All equipment specified for high temperature insulation shall be insulated with block or board insulation of thickness as specified. 6.1.2 Where bands are used to secure insulation, the maximum temperature for the bands should be established by the metal band manufacturer due to the expansion of the equipment when heated. Expansion bands shall be used where applicable. 6.2 Round Equipment

6.2.1 Insulation shall be cut or mitered, where necessary, to fit the shape and contour of the equipment. For curved surfaces between 838-mm (33 in.) O.D. and 1219-mm (48 in.) O.D., secure insulation in place with 12.5-mm ( in.) wide .20 monel bands on 457-mm (18 in.) centres. For curved surfaces over 1219-mm (48 in.) O.D., secure insulation in place with 19-mm (3/4 in.) wide .20 monel bands on 457-mm (18 in.) centres. Point up all joints with insulating cement. On horizontal cylinders, equal to or greater than 1524-mm (60 in.) O.D., supply insulation support angles longitudinally 30 degrees below horizontal centreline. 6.3 Flat or Irregular Equipment

6.3.1 Insulation shall be cut or mitered to fit the shape and contour of the equipment. Impale the insulation on pins or studs or band in place, as required. Apply a 6.4mm (1/4 in.) coat of insulating cement, as required, to cover all irregularities and to provide a smooth finish. 6.4 Finish

6.4.1 Indoor Apply finish cement, as required, to fill all voids and to provide a smooth finish. When dry, apply 0.41-mm (0.016 in.) aluminium jacket, banded or screwed in place. 6.4.2 Outdoor Cover insulation with sheet aluminium 0.41-mm (0.016 in.) thick, fabricated to the shape of the equipment, mechanically fastened in plastic with 19 x 0.51-mm (3/4 x 0.020 in.) bands, stainless steel sheet metal screws, or pop rivets.

Towers, Horizontal and Vertical, Tanks and Heat Exchangers

6.5.1 On vertical towers and tanks, insulation shall be supported by circumferential angle rings welded to the shell on 3.66-mm (12 ft) centres. On the cylindrical portion of vessel under 6.1-m (20 ft) in diameter, the insulation shall be held in place with 19 x 0.51-mm ( x 0.020 in.) stainless steel bands spaced on 305mm (12 in.) centres. In the case of double layer application, the first layer may be secured in place with 14-gauge wire 305-mm (12 in.) centre. Ends of wire shall be twisted together, bent over, and pressed into the insulation. 6.5.2 On the cylindrical portion of vessels over 6.1-m (20 ft) in diameter, the insulation shall be impaled on welded pins (9-gauge wire), on 305-mm (12 in.) centres, and secured in place with 38.1-mm (1 in.) speed washers. If a corrugated metal jacket is to be used as a weatherproof finish, then welded shoulder studs should replace welded pins. 6.6 Vertical Tank Tops

6.6.1 Conical and Spherical Weld 18-gauge steel channels on 610-mm (2 ft) centres across the tank top. Channels are to be furred out from the surface to the insulation thickness using angle shims welded to the tank top. 6.7 Horizontal Tank Ends

6.7.1 Spherical or Dished Insulation shall be cut to fit contour of surface held in place with 19 by 0.51-mm (3/4 x 0.020 in.) monel bands fastened to a floating ring at one end and anchored to the circumferential band welded to the tank shell. 6.7.2 Alternate Where difficulty is encountered insulating spherical or dished heads, metal framing may be installed over the tank end so as to result in a flat end surface. Insulation is then either applied to the metal frame and banded in place or the frame is jacketed with sheet metal and packed with loose fill insulation. 6.8 Finish

6.8.1 On the cylindrical portion of the vertical or horizontal tank, apply corrugated aluminium 0.6-mm (0.024 in.) thick. Overlap all horizontal joints a minimum of 38.1mm (1-1/2 in.) or two corrugations. Method of securement may be either monel bands not over 1212-mm (4 ft) on centres or a composite of welded shoulder studs and bands. 6.9 Appurtenances

6.9.1 Insulation shall be cut to fit specific configuration. Aluminium sheets shall be carefully fitted around all manholes, nozzles, and couplings on shell of tanks in
P.O. Number : 7200018725

order to make a weather-tight covering. A sufficient quantity of Outdoor Breather Mastic shall be applied on all overlapping metal surfaces, as well as in areas adjacent to the appurtenance, so that all joints, seams, and so forth, are weatherproof.
