3 4 7 9 A puzzle to test audience alertness.

Requires: three stripper cards, preferably of one suit (red shows up better, diamonds are best as they are symmetrical from either end); these are 3, 4, 7. No table required, resets itself at end. This magic effect can be done as a close-up pocket packet effect, or with jumbo cards as a stage magic effect. SETUP: Face down, from the top card 7 4 3. The top and face cards have their wide ends towards the performer; the middle card (4) has its wide end away from the performer. Hold the packet face down in the right hand palm up, fingers and thumb at the long sides, near the outer end. Take the packet with the left fingers and thumb on the sides near the inner end of the cards, palm down. Show Theres a 3 on the bottom of the packet, by holding the packet face down, and rotating the left hand outwards to show the face card. Strip out the top and bottom cards, and turn the left hand over outwards to show A 3 on the top. Place these [two] cards face down on the top of the packet. Draw out the middle card from the outer end and turn it over endwise towards performer, to show it face up And theres a 3 in the middle. Turn it over sideways, facedown on the top of the packet. Would you believe me if I said I had just shown four cards? No? But they are! Theres a 4 on the bottom of the packet. Hold the packet face down in the right hand palm up, fingers and thumb at the long sides. Take the packet with the left hand at the outer end of the cards, and turn them over endwise, towards the performer. Show A 4 on the bottom of the packet, by holding the packet face up. Then take the cards by the inner end and rotating the left hand inwards, turn the packet face down. Strip out the top and bottom cards, and turn the left hand over outwards to show A 4 on the top. Place these [two] cards face down on the top of the packet. Draw out the middle card from the outer end and turn it over endwise towards performer, to show it face up And theres a 4 in the middle. Turn it over sideways, facedown on the top of the packet. If youve just seen a 3 and a 4, thats seven cards, isnt it? Hold the packet face down in the right hand palm up, fingers and thumb at the long sides. Take the packet with the left hand at the outer end of the cards, and turn them over endwise, towards the performer. Show Theres a 7 on the bottom of the packet, by holding the packet face up. Then take the cards by the inner end and rotating the left hand inwards, turn the packet face down. Strip out the top and bottom cards, and turn the left hand over outwards to show A 7 on the top. Place these [two] cards face down on the top of the packet. Draw out the middle card from the outer end and turn it over endwise towards performer, to show it face up And theres a 7 in the middle. Turn it over sideways, facedown on the top of the packet. If youve just seen three 3s, and three 4s, and three 7s, thats nine cards, isnt it? But I said this was a puzzle with three cards! And there are as I said, just three cards! Fan the backs of the cards, [you can hold up the fan backs to audience, to check the cards have reset for next use]; close the fan. Flash the 3 on the face, and discard the packet.
