FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions Q: Why does the Ctrl+Alt+Del menu item in the Administrator Module not work?? A: This option can be used only in case you are running the Server Module as a Windows NT service. It cannot be used to emulate the Ctrl+Alt+Del keystroke on Windows 9x systems or if the Server Module runs as a normal application on an NT computer. Q: I use my console application on the server side. Why does the Administrator Module not display the screen updates when running this application in full screen mode? A: Unfortunately, the Windows operating system architecture does not allow the program to capture the screen if running it in full screen mode. No remote control product can do this because of this limitation. Q: How do I get answers to my technical questions? A: Please use the support request form available on our site at www.alchemylab.com/products/rcp/support.html or send us a message to support@alchemy-lab.com. Copyright (c) Alchemy Lab, 2003-2008

Tcpip plugin module
Server configuration Tcpip Module Server Configuration When the Administrator clicks the Network tab to configure a certain transport plugin setting, the program displays the Network settings dialog. The program suggests that the Administrator specify: The TCP/IP port that will be used to listen for incoming connections. The Security mode : should the Server Module accept non-secure connections only, or secure connections only, or both secure and non-secure connections

If the Administrator allows the Server Module to accept secure connections, they should generate the encryption key used to encrypt the data being sent by the Server Module to and from the Administrator module, and populate the key to the remote computers that have Remote Control Pro installed. Please check the Security Notes article for more information about the encryption keys. Copyright (c) Alchemy Lab, 2003-2008 2.3.1.2 Client configuration Tcpip Module Client Configuration When configuring the TCP/IP network plugin properties in the Connection parameters dialog in the Remote Control Pro Administrator Module, the Network Administrator should specify the following options for the remote computer they wish to connect to with the help of the selected connection object:

The remote computer TCP/IP address in the dotted or literal notation. The Port field contains the TCP/IP port the remote computer listens for incoming connections. The TCP/IP port the remote computer listens for incoming connections. The Security option: use a non-secure connection, use a secure connection if the server is configured to support this mode and the non-secure connection otherwise, or use only a secure connection. If the Administrator has selected a secure connection, the TCP/IP plugin dialog will show them the encryption key identifier available on the local computer (if any). For more information about the Remote Control Pro security options please refer to the Security Notes article. Copyright (c) Alchemy Lab, 2003-2008 2.3.1.3 Security Note Remote Control Pro Security Notes When configuring Remote Control Pro, the Network Administrator can set up the program to encrypt all the network traffic being sent from the Server Module to the Administrator Module and back from the Administrator to the Server. Remote Control Pro uses RC4 128-bit strong encryption and this helps to prevent traffic being intercepted by third parties. To encrypt the traffic, the program needs an encryption key that can be generated within the Server Module. When configuring the Server Module network transport plugin, the Network Administrator can specify that the server can accept secure connections from the clients (Administrator modules installed on the remote PCs), and generate the encryption key by clicking the (re)Generate button in the plugin Server transport settings configuration dialog.

2003-2008 Alchemy Lab

Settings and configuration

14

When the Administrator clicks the (re)Generate button for the first time, the program generates the RC4 128-bit encryption key and places it in the file in the programs \Network\ folder under the rc4crypto.key name, and shows the key identifier (CRC32 value) in the Key ID field. If the Server Module is configured to accept only secure connections from the Administrator Modules installed on network computers, it will accept only connections from those Administrator Modules that have the same encryption key installed. This means that if the Network Administrator prefers to use secure Remote Control Pro connections, they should populate the encryption keys between the computers they plans to use Remote Control Pro software on. To do so, the Network Administrator should copy the rc4crypto.key file described above to the \Network\ folder in the home directory of all instances of this program installed over the network. To ensure the Administrator and the Server modules both have the same encryption key installed, the Network Administrator can check the value of the Key ID field both in the Server and Administrator modules:

As it was described before, the Key ID is a CRC32 control sum of the encryption rc4crypto.key encryption files will have different values in this field. Copyright (c) Alchemy Lab, 2003-2008

Tcp ip ini file settings Tcpip Module ini settings The TCP/IP network plugin stores its settings in the tcpip.ini file in the plugins home folder. The file contains the [server] section, which contains the network settings for the Server Module, and the [client] section containing the Administrator Module settings. The default INI file included in the program installation contains the following settings: [Server] Port = 4000 NoDelay = 1 [Client] Host = localhost Port = 4000 NoDelay = 1 The Host option defines the default TCP/IP address the Administrator Module will suggest to the user when creating a new connection in the Available Connections dialog and default security settings. This INI file option can be written in one of the following forms: host_address -Default TCP/IP address in dotted or literal notation. Only non-secure incoming connections are allowed if this option is written in this form.host_address;secureavail - Default TCP/IP address in dotted or literal notation, followed by the secureavail reserved word. This form instructs the Administrator Module to use a secure connection if it is supported by the server and a non-secure connection otherwise.host_address;secureonly - Default TCP/IP address in dotted or literal notation, followed by the secureonly reserved word. This form instructs the Administrator Module to use only a secure connection when connecting to the remote server The Port option specifies the default value for the TCP/IP port that will be suggested to the user when editing the network settings. The NoDelay option defines whether the TCP/IP network plugin will use the Tcp Nagle algorithm or not. The Nagle algorithm performs more effective tcp packet filling, but slows down network response time. Setting this option to one helps a network application get a faster response from the remote end but can increase network traffic. It is recommended that this option should be set to one ("Do not use Nagle algorithm") except for the slower networks (e.g. modem connection). Copyright (c) Alchemy Lab, 2003-2008
