Introduction
Instant-Activity Kits
Classroom Suite includes 30 instant-activity kits. Each kit includes an Activity ready for students to use, a Template ready for teachers to create additional similar activities quickly, and a PDF file of this tutorial.

Create a Folder for Your New Activities

When you use this template, you will be creating new activities for your students to use. To organize these activities, you will want to create your own folder in the Activities area of Classroom Suite. 1. At the Navigation Screen, click the Activities button. Click the New Folder button on the right side of the screen. A dialog box will ask you to name the folder. Give it the name of one of your classes (e.g., Mrs. Smiths Class).

Spelling
The Spelling instant-activity kit includes the Spelling Practice activity, the Spelling Template, and a PDF file of this tutorial. You can find these components by opening the Language Arts Templates folder and then the Spelling folder in the New area of Classroom Suite. The Spelling Template provides spelling practice for students at a variety of grade levels. Students use the provided spelling lists to practice. The text is read aloud by the computer as students make selections. Five spelling lists (Primer Dolch, 1st Dolch, 2nd Dolch, 3rd Dolch, Often Misspelled) are ready for you to use. You will also learn how to create your own spelling list. In this tutorial, you will start by exploring the Spelling Practice activity. Later in the tutorial, you will learn to create customized spelling activities, using the Spelling Template.

2. Open the Spelling Template (see page 3). 3. When you complete your work with the template and click the Finish Activity button, the Save As Activity dialog box appears. Name your new activity, select the folder in which you want to place your work, and click OK. Your new activity will now be available for you to assign to students.

Universal Design
The activities you create using the Spelling Template and Classroom Suite are designed for all students, including those with physical or cognitive disabilities.

This tutorial requires that you have installed Note IntelliTalk 3. Authoring features necessary to complete this tutorial are not available when using the IntelliTalk 3 Player.

Part 3: Customizing the Spelling Template

Changing from Practice to Assessment
The Spelling Template provides spelling practice by reading the word or phrase to be spelled aloud, while simultaneously showing the words in blue text under a supporting picture. For assessment purposes, you can have the same activity provide only the auditory and picture prompt, and remove the blue text. 1. From the Navigation Screen, click the Activities button. 2. Open any of the spelling activities you have created and saved in this tutorial. If you have not created your own activity, you Note can use the Spelling Practice activity, found in the Language Arts folder, for this part of the tutorial. 3. From the IntelliTalk menu, select Picture Options. 4. When the Picture Options dialog box displays, click the Appearance tab. Select Picture. The student will now have to spell using only the auditory prompt and the supporting picture. No blue text will show under the picture. 5. From the File menu, select Save As Activity. Save this activity with a new name, such as Spelling Quiz. Because the words are presented randomly each Note time a student uses the new Spelling Quiz you have created, it is not possible to capture answers or check work. To assess this quiz, have students print their work when they are finished.

Congratulations! You have just learned to modify the Spelling Template to provide an infinite number of Spelling activities and quizzes for your students.
