GLOBAL MOBILE POSITIONING TECHNOLOGIES MARKET TO REACH $36.3 BILLION IN 2016 Wellesley, Mass.

According to a new technical market research report, GLOBAL MARKETS FOR MOBILE POSITIONING TECHNOLOGY: COMMERCIAL, MILITARY, HOMELAND DEFENSE (SAS011C) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for mobile location technologies was valued at $22.5 billion in 2010 and nearly $25.1 billion in 2011. It is expected to increase to nearly $36.3 billion in 2016 for a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.6%. The mobile positioning technology market can be broken down into four segments: vehicle navigation, surveying and mapping, people and animal tracking, and other. The segment made up of vehicle navigation systems accounted for more than 61% of the mobile positioning market in 2010, at a value of $13.8 billion. The segment is expected to reach nearly $15.4 billion in 2011 and grow to nearly $22.6 billion in 2016 for a CAGR of 8% over the fiveyear period. The segment made up of surveying and mapping devices had sales of $2 billion in 2010, 8.9% of the total market. The segment is expected to reach $2.2 billion in 2011 and $3.6 billion in 2016 for a CAGR of 10% between 2011 and 2016. The people and animal tracking segment, worth $2.3 billion in 2011, should surpass $3.5 billion in 2016, a CAGR of 8.6%. The other mobile positioning segment totaled nearly $5.2 billion in 2011, and is expected to be worth nearly $6.6 billion in 2016, yielding a CAGR of 4.9%. Mobile location technologies are able to locate points, objects, or people on or above the earths surface by calculating the distances from one or more, usually at least three, reference points. These can be satellites orbiting in space, ground radio stations, cell phone towers, wireless local area network (LAN) access points, or radio-frequency identification (RFID) receivers. Each type of technology has its advantages and limitations, depending on the specific application. While they are, to some extent, competitive with one another, each technology has applications for which it is especially well-suited. Additional mobile location technologies are being developed, many of them involving a combination of two or more existing positioning technologies. This report is especially intended for executives, entrepreneurs, investors, venture capitalists, and other readers with a need to know where the mobile location market is headed in the next five years. Other readers who should find the report valuable include the military, public

safety/homeland security, transportation, and communications agencies whose responsibilities involve mobile location systems. In addition to SAS011C, BCC also has published SAS016A, SAS017A, SAS018A, and SAS019A. These reports cover mobile positioning technology markets with focuses, respectively, on the U.S. and Canada, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and emerging market regions.
