Lorraine Majors version

Several years ago Sue Hulbert posted to the Knitting mailing list a pattern for a baby jacket which could be made in just a few hours. It became known as the 5HBS (5 hour baby sweater). I tried it but wasn't happy with a couple of aspects of it, so made a few changes and this is my version. Materials: One 4-oz. skein of knitting worsted weight yarn (may need a little more) (I used less than 100g of a fluffy acrylic/nylon mixture, about double knitting weight, light worsted) Needles: 6.5 mm (US 10 1/2) check your tension (gauge) and adjust to suit. Gauge: 4 sts to 1 in Garment measures 20 ins around, would fit about 17-18" Note re increases: I have written this to use Elizabeth Zimmermans M1 increase ie make a backward loop and place on right hand needle. Feel free to use your favourite increase, but note that if you prefer to use the knit in front and back of st version you will need to leave 1 less st between incs. Starting at the neck edge, cast on 33 stitches. Rows 1 - 4: Knit. Row 5: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3. Always keep first and last 3 sts in 'knit' even on p row. Row 6: K4, (m1 k2) 14 times, K1.(47 sts). Row 7: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3. Row 8: K3, * K2tog. Repeat from * ending K4. (27 sts). Row 9: K3, * K1, insert needle under next horizontal loop of row below (between sts) and knit this st. Repeat from * across, ending K4.(47 st). Row 10: K4, (M1 K3) 14 times, K1. (61). Row 11: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3. Row 12: K3, * K2 tog. Repeat from * ending K4. (34 sts). Row 13: Same as row 9. (61 sts). Row 14: K5, (M1 K4) 14 times. (75 st) Row 15: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3. Row 16: Same as row 8. (41 sts). Row 17: Same as row 9. (75 sts). Row 18: K5, (M1 K5) 14 times.(89) Row 19: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3. Row 20: Same as row 8. (48 sts). Row 21: Same as row 9. (89 sts). Row 22: K5, (M1 K6) 14 times) (103 sts). Row 23: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3. Row 24: Same as row 8. (55 sts).

Row 26: (in which a few more sts are increased and markers are placed to show positions of fronts, back and sleeves) K6 M1 K5 M1 K5 M1 K1 place marker (pm), K1 M1 K6 M1 K5 M1 K6 M1 K1 pm, K1 M1 (K6 M1) twice K5 M1 (K6 M1) twice K1 pm, K1 M1 K6 M1 K5 M1 K6 M1 K1 pm, K1 M1 K5 M1 K5 M1 K6. (123 sts divided as follows: 20 - 23 - 37 - 23 - 20) Row 27: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3. Row 28: Knit, inc 1 st each side of markers (for neatness, work the inc 1 st in from the marker) (131 sts). Row 29: Same as row 27. Row 30: Same as row 28. (139 sts). Row 31: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3. **Now is the time to divide things up If you prefer it put each section on a separate length of spare yarn - I dont usually bother if I am knitting the sleeves first. BUT if you want to make this totally seamless, see the note at the end. Sleeve: Slip sts from first (front) section up to marker (should be 22 sts) on to right hand needle. Cast on 2 sts, knit across sleeve section (27 sts), turn and cast on 2 sts, purl back. Continue to work in stockinette st for 22 rows. Next row: K2, (K2 tog, K3) 5 times, K2tog K2. Knit 7 rows. Cast off. Slip sts from back section (41 sts) to right hand needle. Work second sleeve the same as the first. Sew sleeve seams. Now slip all body sts on to one needle. Knit across front sts, knit up 4 sts across cast on sts at sleeve underarm, knit across back sts, knit up 4 from other sleeve underarm, knit across second front. Work in st. st.(SS) for 14 rows, keeping to garter st border. Row 15: Repeat row 8 (RS) Row 16: Repeat row 9. Work 2 rows in SS. Repeat last 4 rows twice more. Work 8 rows in garter st Cast off. (= US bind off) **Note. For a totally seamless garment: Knit across front sts, slip first sleeve sts to a length of spare yarn, cast on 4, knit across back section, slip second sleeve sts to spare yarn, cast on 4, knit across other front. Complete body as given above. Sleeve sts can then be worked on dpns - use the sts on spare yarn and pick up 4 across the cast on sts of body. Complete as above. Copyright 1996 Lorraine J Major
