What is Abuse?
Child Abuse happens when a person physically hurts a child or adolescent, has or attempts sexual contact with him/her or does not provide adequate food, care, or shelter. It can include one or more of the following: Physical Abuse: Threatening a persons life or causing serious physical injury. Examples: hitting, biting, burning, kicking, and discipline that leaves marks on the body. Sexual Abuse: When a person violates a child or teen (male or female) in a sexual manner. It can include physical contact and nontouching sexual behaviors, such as being made to watch obscene material or take explicit photos. This can happen by a family member (incest), someone known, or by a stranger. Emotional Abuse: Typically repeated yelling at or insulting a child/teen, unfair expectations, and telling the child/teen he/she was a mistake or is not loved. Criminal Neglect: When a parent does not provide for a childs basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, medical care and safety. Leaving youth (typically under the age of 10) home alone for long periods of time or kicking them out of the house.

Important Information When Reporting

Name, age, & address of the victim. Who was involved & what happened. Are there current injuries or signs of abuse? After a report has been made, someone from law enforcement and/or DHS/Child Welfare will evaluate the situation and determine what type of intervention is needed.

Things to Consider
Call 911 or the Child Abuse Hotline at 503.378.6704 To deal with child abuse we must recognize it and report it. Identify a trusted adult you can talk with, like a teacher or counselor so they can assist in some way. If you tell someone who does not help you, then tell someone else. If a friend tells you that he/she is being abused or has been abused, it is important to: listen carefully, be supportive, and tell a trusted adult. Abuse can have a serious impact on the community and can happen anywhere such as: at home, school, church, on sports teams to name a few.
