Safety Information
CAUTION TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE OR SHOCK, DO NOT EXPOSE THIS PRODUCT TO RAIN OR MOISTURE. Servicing is required when the apparatus has been physically damaged in any way, such as when the power supply cord or plug is damaged, liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the apparatus, the apparatus has been exposed to rain or moisture, or has been dropped. To prevent electric shock, plug the equipment into properly grounded electrical outlets. Ensure that the ground prong of the power plug is inserted in the ground contact of the power strip. Incorrect insertion of the power plug could result in permanent damage to your equipment, as well as risk of electric shock and/or fire. To help avoid the potential hazard of electric shock, power down the system and unplug the system during an electrical storm. Do not connect or disconnect cables or perform maintenance or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical storm. Do not expose equipment to dripping or splashing. Do not spill food or liquids on the equipment. No objects filled with liquids should be placed on the equipment. Do not use equipment in a wet environment, for example, near a bath tub, sink, or swimming pool. Clean only with a dry cloth and when unplugged.
Do not block any ventilation openings or push any objects into the openings. Doing so can cause fire or electric shock by damaging interior components. Ensure that nothing rests on the equipments cables and that the cables are not located where they can be stepped on or tripped over. Protect the power cord and cables from being walked on or pinched particularly.
Regulatory Compliance
FCC (Federal Communication Commission) Information This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, can cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures: Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna. Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver. Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected. To reinstall a Yellow Machine appliance software, perform the following sequence of tasks:

2. Power on the Yellow Machine appliance. 3. (Upgrade Only) Verify that your RAID status is OK. If RAID status is not OK, you must repair the RAID array before you continue. To verify RAID status, go to the Yellow Machine Software v3.3 Users Manual. To repair a RAID array, go to the Yellow Machine Software v3.3 Users Manual.
4. Back up the data that resides on the Yellow Machine appliance to a disk outside of the Yellow Machine appliance. If you do not choose to preserve your user data when prompted during an installation, the Yellow Machine Installer reformats your disk drives and erases all user data. Although an upgrade does not reformat your disk drives and preserves your data, a backup protects against unforeseen events.
5. Disable your PCs Hibernation/Sleep mode. Otherwise, the upgrade or installation process will not complete promptly.
6. Except for the LAN port connection between the administrative PC and the Yellow Machine appliance, disconnect all other devices that are connected to the WAN and LAN ports on the Yellow Machine appliance. Set up your configuration as shown in Figure 1.
7. Except for the connection to the Yellow Machine appliance, disable all other network interfaces, including wireless, on the PC. 8. Record your PCs IP address settings as you change them temporarily during this installation. Record these settings by using Figure 2.
Caution: You must set the IP address as follows before you begin the upgrade or installation process. If you do not, your PC will not be able to communicate with the Yellow Machine appliance, and you will be forced to restart the upgrade or installation process. To restart the installation process, you must power off the Yellow Machine appliance. Because the Yellow Machine appliance is already in an upgrade or installation state, the only method to power off the Yellow Machine appliance is to unplug the power cable on the Yellow Machine appliance from the power outlet. This method can cause hard drive failures and data loss.
9. Set the PCs static IP address and subnet mask as show in Figure 3: a. From Windows XP, click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections > Local Area Connection > [Properties] > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties. The General dialogue box opens. b. Enter 172.16.1.2 in the IP address box and 255.255.255.0 in Subnet mask box. c. Click OK, and close the open Control Panel windows.
10. Disable the following on your PC: Anti-virus or worm detection programs Windows firewall Pop-up blocker software FTP and VPN software To upgrade software, go to Upgrading Yellow Machine Appliance Software on page 11. To reinstall software, go to Reinstalling Yellow Machine Appliance Software on page 16.

To upgrade software on the Yellow Machine appliance and the Yellow Machine Control on your PC:
Before You Begin
Do one of the following: Review the information outlined in About Upgrading Yellow Machine Appliance Software on page 6 to familiarize yourself with the upgrade process. If you have not already done so, prepare to upgrade as outlined in Preparing Yellow Machine Appliance on page 8. 1. Do one of the following: If you have the product CD-ROMs, which ship with the Yellow Machine Software v3.3 Upgrade Kit, insert the Yellow Machine System Software CD into your PCs CD-ROM drive. The Yellow Machine Setup Wizard launches. If you downloaded Yellow Machine Software v3.3 from www.YellowMachine.com, double-click the setup.exe file on the Yellow Machine System Software CD. The Yellow Machine Setup Wizard launches.
2. Click Next. The End User License Agreement (EULA) windows appears. 3. Select the I Accept radio button to accept the End User License Agreement, and click Next. The Find Your Yellow Machine Appliance window appears. 4. Do one of the following: If you are upgrading from Yellow Machine Software v2.92 or earlier version, select the My Yellow Machine is not found in the list box above checkbox, select the Yellow Machine appliance that you want to upgrade, and then click Next. If you are upgrading from Yellow Machine Software v2.93 or later version, in the list box, select the Yellow Machine appliance that you want to upgrade, and click Next.
5. If the following message appears, click OK. This message appears if the Yellow Machine Installer detects specific old version of system software on the Yellow Machine appliance that you selected.

6. Select the following checkboxes as shown in Figure 4, and click Next: Install full Yellow Machine Control utility Recommendation: Anthology Solutions recommends that you always use the latest version of the Yellow Machine Control on any PC that you intend to use to administer a Yellow Machine appliance. Upgrade system software with your data preserved
7. Select an installation folder (the default is C:\Program Files\Yellow Machine\) in which to save the Yellow Machine Control, and click Next. The Yellow Machine Installer installs an updated version of the Yellow Machine Control. 8. If the following message appears, click Yes to shut down the Yellow Machine appliance or to confirm that the Yellow Machine appliance is already powered off.
9. If the Yellow Machine Installer detects a specific incompatible version of the system software and displays the Shutting Down Yellow Machine window, perform the preparation steps listed in that window if you have not already done so, and click Next. These preparation steps are also outlined in Preparing Yellow Machine Appliance on page 8.

Caution: If you do not perform these preparation steps before you continue, your PC will not be able to communicate with the Yellow Machine appliance.
10. If you have not already done so, perform the preparation steps listed in the System Software Installation Preparation Tips window, and click Next. The Installation Status window appears. Caution: During the upgrade process, do not power off the Yellow Machine appliance or disconnect the LAN cable that connects your PC to the Yellow Machine appliance. If you do not adhere to this requirement, your Yellow Machine appliance might hang during the upgrade process.

11. Trigger the upgrade process: a. Press and hold the MODE button on the front panel. b. While pressing and holding the MODE button in, toggle the On/Off switch in the upper center of the rear panel. c. When the green READY LED on the front panel turns on, release the MODE button. Note: During the upgrade process, both FAULT and READY LEDs are on. After a few minutes, both LEDs begin blinking. Several minutes later, the FAULT LED turns off. The READY LED remains on and blinking until the upgrade process completes. The upgrade process for the Yellow Machine System Software CD requires 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete. When the upgrade completes successfully, the Installation Finished window appears.
12. Do one of the following: If you want to update or install supplemental software that runs on the Yellow Machine appliance, insert the Yellow Machine Supplemental Software CD. The Software Package Selections window appears. To purchase the Yellow Machine Supplemental Software CD, order the Yellow Machine Software v3.3 Upgrade Kit at www.YellowMachine.com. If you do not want to update or install supplemental software that runs on the Yellow Machine appliance, select the No I do not have an additional CD checkbox, click Next, and click Finish. You do not need to continue to the next step.

13. From the Software Package Selection window, install the supplemental software: a. Select the Install radio button or the Upgrade radio button. If you want the new packages (such as media player support) that Yellow Machine Software v3.3 offers, select the Install radio button. If you only want to upgrade your existing supplemental packages, select the Upgrade radio button. b. Select the checkbox that corresponds to the supplemental package(s) that you want to install or upgrade as shown in Figure 7.
c. Select the checkbox that corresponds to the supplemental package(s) that you want to install or upgrade as shown in Figure 7, and click Next.The Software Package Installation Option Confirmation window appears. d. Confirm your selection, and click Next. The Yellow Machine Installer upgrades or installs the supplemental software packages that you selected, and then the Installation Finished windows appears. 14. Select the No, I do not have an additional CD checkbox, and click Next. Yellow Machine Software v3.3 has only one Supplemental CD. 15. When the following message appears, click OK. The Yellow Machine Software Installation Complete window appears. 16. Click Finish to exit the Yellow Machine Installer. 17. If applicable, return your configuration to its original state: a. Re-enable the firewall and anti-virus/worm-detection software on your PC. b. Connect the network cables as they were prior to performing Step 8 of Preparing Yellow Machine Appliance on page 8. c. Change the PCs IP address back to the values you recorded in Step 6 of Preparing Yellow Machine Appliance on page 8.

18. Ensure that you can access the Yellow Machine appliance that you upgraded: a. Launch the Yellow Machine Control. b. Click Explore. c. In the list box, double-click on the Yellow Machine appliance that you upgraded. If you do not see your Yellow Machine appliance, power on and power off the Yellow Machine appliance, and then try again.
To reinstall software on the Yellow Machine appliance and the Yellow Machine Control on your PC:
Before You Begin

The Yellow Machine Setup Wizard launches. If you downloaded Yellow Machine Software v3.3 from www.YellowMachine.com, double-click the setup.exe file on the Yellow Machine System Software CD. The Yellow Machine Setup Wizard launches.
2. Click Next. The End User License Agreement (EULA) windows appears. 3. Select the I Agree radio button to accept the End User License Agreement, and click Next. The Find Your Yellow Machine Appliance window appears. 4. From the list box, the Yellow Machine appliance on which you want to reinstall software, and click Next. If your Yellow Machine appliance does not appear in the list box, select the My Yellow Machine is not found in the list box above checkbox, and try again.

5. If the following message appears, click OK. This message appears if the Yellow Machine Installer detects specific old version of system software on the Yellow Machine appliance that you selected.
6. Select the following checkboxes as shown in Figure 4, and click Next. Install full Yellow Machine Control utility Recommendation: Anthology Solutions recommends that you always use the latest version of the Yellow Machine Control on any PC that you intend to use to administer a Yellow Machine appliance. 7. Select an installation folder (the default is C:\Program Files\Yellow Machine\) in which to save the Yellow Machine Control, and click Next. The Yellow Machine Installer installs an updated version of the Yellow Machine Control.

8. From the New Installation of Yellow Machine Appliance Storage window, specify the file system and RAID configuration, and click Next. Note: If you have a 2-disk Yellow Machine appliance, you cannot choose RAID 5 as that configuration requires at least three disk drives. To learn about the benefits of Journaling File System (Journaling FS), go to the Yellow Machine Software v3.3 Users Manual. You can enable Journaling FS after you perform the installation, but you must enable this feature before you save user data to the Yellow Machine appliance. To learn about the benefits of different RAID configurations, go to Yellow Machine Software v3.3 Users Manual.
9. If the following message appears, click Yes to shut down the Yellow Machine appliance or to confirm that the Yellow Machine appliance is already powered off.
10. If the Yellow Machine Installer detects a specific incompatible version of the system software and displays the Shutting Down Yellow Machine window, perform the preparation steps listed in that window if you have not already done so, and click Next. These preparation steps are also outlined in Preparing Yellow Machine Appliance on page 8. Caution: If you do not perform these preparation steps before you continue, your PC will not be able to communicate with the Yellow Machine appliance.
11. If you have not already done so, perform the preparation steps listed in the System Software Installation Preparation Tips window, and click Next. The Installation Status window appears.

Caution: During the installation process, do not power off the Yellow Machine appliance or disconnect the LAN cable that connects your PC to the Yellow Machine appliance. If you do not adhere to this requirement, your Yellow Machine appliance might hang during the installation process. 12. Trigger the installation process: a. Press and hold the MODE button on the front panel. b. While pressing and holding the MODE button in, toggle the On/Off switch in the upper center of the rear panel. c. When the green READY LED on the front panel turns on, release the MODE button. Note: During the installation process, both FAULT and READY LEDs are on. After a few minutes, both LEDs begin blinking. Several minutes later, the FAULT LED turns off. The READY LED remains on and blinking until the installation process completes. 13. After 5 minutes and when the following message appears, determine whether you want to save or permanently remove all user data.
If you click Yes, this option enables you to reinstall your Yellow Machine appliances system softwarewithout permanently removing the data that you already saved to your Yellow Machine appliance. The installation process for the Yellow Machine System Software CD requires 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete. When the installation completes, the Installation Finished window appears.

14. Do one of the following: If you want to install supplemental software that runs on the Yellow Machine appliance, insert the Yellow Machine Supplemental Software CD. The Software Package Selections window appears. The Yellow Machine Supplemental Software CD ships with the Yellow Machine appliance. If you do not want to install supplemental software that runs on the Yellow Machine appliance, select the No I do not have an additional CD checkbox, click Next, and click Finish. You do not need to continue to the next step.
15. From the Software Package Selections window, install the supplemental software: a. Select the Install radio button.
b. Select the checkbox that corresponds to the supplemental package(s) that you want to install as shown in Figure 11, and click Next.The Software Package Installation Option Confirmation window appears. c. Confirm your selection, and click Next. The Yellow Machine Installer installs the supplemental software packages that you selected, and then the Installation Finished windows appears.

16. Select the No, I do not have an additional CD checkbox, and click Next. Yellow Machine Software v3.3 has only one Supplemental CD.
17. When the confirmation message appears, click OK. The Yellow Machine appliance begins to reboot, and the Yellow Machine Network Setup window appears.
18. Exit the Yellow Machine Appliance Network Setup window. The Yellow Machine Software Installation Complete window appears. 19. From the Yellow Machine Software Installation Complete window, click Finish to exit the Yellow Machine Installer. The Yellow Machine Control launches. 20. Wait for the Yellow Machine appliance to reboot. The FAULT LED turns off after the Yellow Machine appliance reboots. 21. Allow the Yellow Machine appliance to initialize (prepare) the disk drives and rebuild RAID. The Yellow Machine appliance requires 30 minutes to initialize (prepare) the disk drives. Afterward, your can access and save files on the Yellow Machine appliance. Depending on your configuration, the Yellow Machine appliance requires up to several hours to rebuild RAID. During this time, access to your Yellow Machine appliance is slow. To estimate the amount of time that your specific configuration requires, go to the Yellow Machine Software v3.3 Users Manual.

22. If applicable, return your configuration to its original state: a. Re-enable the firewall and anti-virus/worm-detection software on your PC. b. Connect the network cables as they were prior to performing Step 8 of Preparing Yellow Machine Appliance on page 8. c. Change the PCs IP address back to the values you recorded in Step 6 of Preparing Yellow Machine Appliance on page 8. 23. After the Yellow Machine appliance rebuilds RAID, ensure that you can access the Yellow Machine appliance: a. Launch the Yellow Machine Control. b. Click Explore. c. In the list box, double-click on the Yellow Machine appliance. If you do not see your Yellow Machine appliance, power on and power off the Yellow Machine appliance, and then try again.
