Determine a theme or central idea of a text provide an objective summary of the text. RL.9-10.4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and place; how it sets a formal or informal tone) Lesson Objective(s): Students will gain basic/introductory knowledge about the early 1920s in preparation for a Unit on The Great Gatsby. Introduce the Learning Activity: Communicate objectives with Students: Begin the class by stating that the next Unit will be on The Great Gatsby and that today will focus on background information on the 1920s Motivator: Tell the class that instead of looking at a short story or poem (as is the usual method of introduction) we will instead be playing a web game to fill out a KWL sheet. Were actually doing something fun! Provide Information: Everything we need for today will be available on my website, the links needed are there, but be sure to listen for directions. Im not using the board today. Provide Practice: As a class, fill out the first two boxes on the KWL sheet, (what I know, and What I want to know) this should take about 5 minutes. Direct students to the website with the Mind your Manners game, instruct them to play as many areas as possible in the remaining time, (until the last 5-6 minutes of class). If they complete all areas before the time is up, they may go to the second game website, just for fun (The Great Gatsby NES game). They may work individually or in pairs. Individual KWL sheets are required. Provide Knowledge of Results: KWL Sheets Verbal feedback : Walk around the room, comment on a correct or incorrect answer in the game. Encourage students to enter new information or questions on their KWL sheets

Written feedback: N/A, no collection Review the Activity: As a class, fill out the remaining box on the KWL sheet in the last 56 minutes of class and print out copies for students. For Homework, Read the first chapter of the book, research any unanswered Questions on the KWL Method of Assessment: Formative, observe students filling out KWL sheets on their own.
