11 Diagonal Street

!n October 1981, Helmut Jahn,

one of America's foremost
architects from the firm
NurphyfJahn in Chicago, was
commissioned to design 11
Diagonal Street. Designs were
finalised in November of that year
and by the end of January 1982,
site excavation had been
completed and building
commenced, which was completed
in early 1983.

The building turned out to be an
architectural masterpiece and
many large and corporate
companies took residence at this
new exclusive address.

Today AngloGold Ashanti corporate head office is found on the top 10
floors of the building.

The building is characterised by its diamond shape, which is covered
by an outer wall of reflective glass covering 12,000m (2,75 rugby
fields). The magnificent foyer is an atrium five stories high, finished off
with the same reflective glass used on the exterior of the building.
The building is serviced by eight high and low-rise speed lifts and two
shuttle lifts from the basement. The highest-level equipment is used
throughout the building.

The building boasts a GLA of 32,95+m office space, consisting of 19
floors and two basement parking decks. The top 2 floors are
specifically designed for executive penthouse accommodation and are
serviced by private lifts. All floors are designed around a central core in
the building, where the kitchens, toilets, fire escapes, storage and lifts
are found, resulting in the maximum usage of available office space.

The Newtown area, where 11 Diagonal is situated, has been
transformed thanks to the ongoing rejuvenation programme, into a
safe and bustling entertainment, living, working and financial area in
the Johannesburg CBD. Nany companies are relocating from the
suburbs surrounding Johannesburg to the CBD, taking advantage of
lower rentals. The building is centrally located in the greater
Johannesburg Netropolitan Area and is easily reached by staff living in
the surrounding areas. The new Nelson Nandela bridge provides fast
road access to the Northern suburbs. The area falls under the Central
Johannesburg Partnership (CJP), which helps to reinforce the feeling of
a safe and tranquil atmosphere.
