Midwest Mustang Challenge to return to the 2009 Midwest Horse Fair!

There is something special about the American West - the beauty and freedom that resonates through the wild lands of the Western states. The Midwest Horse Fair, one of the top three-day horse fairs in the nation, is delighted to share in the rich history of the American West by showcasing the Mustang, a symbol of freedom, courage and American heritage. The Midwest Horse Fair, to be held April 17-19,2009 in Madison, Wis., will be bringing back the popular Midwest Mustang Challenge for a return appearance in 2009. Modeled after the Extreme Mustang Makeover in Forth Worth, Texas, the Midwest Mustang Challenge trainers have 100 days to gentle their American Mustangs. The Mustangs are judged on conditioning, ground work and a "Horse Course" that requires maneuvers and included obstacles found in trail and recreational riding situations. Trainers also will be working for their share of $12,500 in prize money. A capacity crowd filled the Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center this past April as 50 trainers from around the country presented the American Mustang horses that had been placed in their care for 100 days. After the judging was complete, the Mustangs were available for adoption by public auction to qualified bidders with the net proceeds benefiting the Mustang Heritage Foundation. The Mustang Heritage Foundation, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), created the Mustang Challenge events to highlight the recognized value of mustangs through a national training competition. The event will give the public a unique opportunity to see the results of wild horses becoming trained mounts and then participate in a competitive bidding process to adopt one of these treasured animals. The purpose of the competition is to showcase the beauty, versatility, and trainability of these rugged horses that roam freely on public lands throughout the West, where they are protected by the BLM under Federallaw. Pennsylvania horse trainer Suzanne Myers took home the top award at the 2008 Midwest Mustang Challenge with her American Mustang partner, "Jazz." Three Wisconsin horse trainers finished in the top ten of the competition. The 50 Mustangs were adopted for more than $90,000 with a sale average of $1,867 . The top bid of $9,000 was for the Mustang "Elvis," trained by Lalo Govea of Kenosha, Wis. The 2009 Midwest Mustang Challenge will be open to qualified trainers to apply for the opportunity to train one of the 50 wild Mustangs. If chosen, they will receive $500 for costs relating to the hauling, training, and veterinary expenses for the Mustang in their care. They will have until the 2009 Midwest Horse Fair "SuperHorse" event, April 17-19,2009, to have their horses trained, prepared and ready for competition. These horses will again be available for adoption by qualified bidders. The Midwest Horse Fair is owned by the Wisconsin State Horse CounCil, Inc. All proceeds from the Fair are returned to the WSHC and are used to represent and foster a unified equine industry in Wisconsin , promote the equine through leadership, education, service and communication, and to take a proactive role in the future growth and development of the equ ine industry.
